MASTER OF SCIENCE DEG M.S. in Mental Health Counseling The master s degree program in mental health counseling is designed for the continued professional development of people who currently serve, or will serve, their communities in various counseling capacities. Master s degree training is based on a model of interdisciplinary collaboration, prevention of dysfunction, and direct service. The field of mental health counseling has placed professionals in mental health settings, business and industry, substance abuse clinics, hospices, hospitals, educational settings, and private practice. The Center for Psychological Studies is firmly committed to the mission of training competent professionals who will design and implement prevention and treatment programs and provide direct counseling services. The coursework provides broad-based training. The mental health counselor will be called on to respond to an increasingly diverse population of citizens and to numerous issues facing our society, such as substance abuse, family violence, divorce, aging, and general population problems. Program Format and Locations Traditional Format Fort Lauderdale Main Campus The master s degree program in mental health counseling at the main campus is organized in a traditional semester format. Classes meet once a week during the fall and winter semesters and twice a week during the summer semester with some weekend course availability. Courses are typically scheduled in the late afternoon and evening, Monday through Thursday. Weekend Format Regional Campuses The mental health counseling program is offered at the NSU campuses in Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Palm Beach, and Tampa campuses. The field-based format is often referred to as a weekend format. The program consists primarily of an eight-week intensive session with class meetings one weekend per month (Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday). Course activities are supplemented with the Blackboard Web platform. Online The master's degree in counseling with a specialization in mental health program courses can be completed online. Training is enhanced with a required residential professional development institute. Students must complete the practicum and internship at an approved site in their community within the United States.
