Intel 500 Series Scalable 10/100 switching from the desktop to the campus backbone Intel 500 Series support scalable and resilient Fast Ethernet switching at every level of your network. Through modular upgrades and Intel s Scalable Stacking Technology, they give you flexible control over port density, uplinks and switch stack performance. You can mix and match all Intel 500 Series and modules within a single stack to provide a customized solution. And as your network evolves, you can add ports and functionality as needed. Two expansion slots The optional modules are compatible with all Intel 500 Series. Use them for: High density stacking Fiber and Gigabit uplinks Redundant connections (550T/550F/520T) 10/100 autonegotiation per port (510T/520T/550T) Flexible support for mixedbandwidth workgroups enables easy integration into your network, plus an effortless migration to Fast Ethernet one user or segment at a time. Adaptive Technology Optimizes performance independently on each port, dynamically adjusting the switching mode based on traffic conditions. High reliability On-board temperature sensor Redundant Power Supply (optional) Link resilience Port Mirroring Analyze and diagnose network traffic on any selected port. Link Aggregation Multiple switch-toswitch and switchto-server connections increase throughput and resiliency. Policy-based VLANs Segment your network to increase performance, enhance security, allocate resources more efficiently, and respond more quickly when you need to add or move users. Once set up, your VLAN configurations can be shared between Intel 500 Series. 56 48 40 32 24 16 8 (min) 196 168 140 112 84 56 28 (max) Ports Total System Potential 8.4Gbps 6.3Gbps 4.2Gbps 2.1Gbps 12.6Gbps 10.5Gbps 14.7Gbps Performance (aggregated backplane bandwidth) With Intel s Scalable Stacking Technology, performance keeps pace with port density when you add additional switches to a stack. 17Gbps Scalable Stacking Technology This Intel technology enables many of the advantages of chassis-based switches to be integrated into Intel 500 Series, but without the high up-front cost. Performance Stack up to 7 switches with a resilient high-performance backplane that scales up to 17Gbps. For every switch you add to a stack, Scalable Stacking Technology provides an additional 2.1Gbps of bandwidth to the backplane. You can add switches as needed to support more users, knowing that your switching fabric will scale to meet increasing traffic demands. Manageability An entire stack can be managed as a single device. Resilience A redundant set of stacking modules can be used to eliminate a single point of failure for switch-to-switch connections (for and 550F es, and 520T ). See the Switch Stacking demo at www.intel.com/network/demo/sst/index.htm 2

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIESJ Stacking Modules Optional accessories for Intel 500 Series For scalable port densities, high-performance uplinks and added resilience Every Intel 500 Series Switch has two expansion slots for optional modules. A redundant power supply can be used to protect Intel 500 Series, increasing network resilience. Gigabit Ethernet Module 2-port 100FX Module 4-port 10/100TX Module Redundant Power Supply Scalable Stacking Modules Stack Interface Module (single port) You ll need one Stack Interface Module per switch to link two switches. You ll need a Matrix Module to stack three or more 500 Series. Matrix Module (6 port) Connect as many as seven total switches. One switch in the stack must have this module. Each of the others must have a Stack Interface Module. 10/100/1000 Modules 1000SX Module Provides a Gigabit Ethernet uplink to individual switches or stacks of switches. It can also be used to link directly to a Gigabit Ethernet. 2-port 100FX Module Extend your Fast Ethernet network with fiber connections up to 2Km. 4-port 10/100TX Module Add an additional four 10/100 autonegotiating ports to any 500 Series switch. Matrix Module Stack Interface Modules Stack up to seven switches high using one Matrix Module plus a Stack Interface Module for each additional switch. Redundant Power Supply Intel 500 Series Redundant Power Supply This device can guard up to four Intel 500 Series. It also works with Intel 200 Series Hubs (210T, 220T). Windows * and Web-based management All Intel come with Intel Device View, a versatile device management application used to install, configure and monitor all manageable Intel devices, including switches, hubs, routers and print servers. Switch and hub stacks can be managed as single devices Network traffic and trends can be analyzed with user-defined graphs Plugs into HP OpenView* Network Node Manager for Windows NT* Windows* and Web-based management from a single interface. Intuitive monitoring and control using a graphical representation of each device. Intel s Install Wizard had us up and running with Device View in about three minutes, which let us remotely configure any aspect of the switch we wanted, as well as view network statistics. Network Computing (3/1/98) Automatically discovers and maps all manageable Intel devices. Distinct icons for Intel switches, hubs, routers and print servers. SNMP trap log aids proactive troubleshooting. Per-port monitoring with built-in RMON and SNMP. For more information, visit www.intel.com/network/idv 4

Intel Gigabit Switch For aggregating Fast Ethernet switches and server farms If you re deploying Fast Ethernet to the desktop, you ll need even greater bandwidth at the backbone. With its 32Gbps crossbar switching fabric, the Intel Gigabit Switch delivers nonblocking, 1000Mbps performance simultaneously on all ports. The crossbar switching architecture also improves fault tolerance. Since packets are transferred in parallel to all ports, there s no single point of failure.
