Network Attached Storage 300 High performance, dual-engine NAS solution Overview The IBM Network Attached Storage 300 was designed to meet your storage requirements across many demanding environments. With rack configuration flexibility, the IBM NAS 300 is an excellent choice for use in departmental and small enterprise applications. The Network Attached Storage 300 provides an affordable but robust solution for the storage needs of either a large branch office or department, or a small enterprise. In these environments the IBM NAS 300 is well suited for support of mission critical tasks such as accounts receivable processing, payroll support or customer service support. IBM, NAS and Storage Networking The IBM TotalStorage Network Attached Storage 300 is part of the overall IBM Storage Networking offering of hardware, software and services. IBM network-attached storage (NAS) products provide you with one more building block to increase the flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness of your storage networking solutions and deployments. Also, because our NAS products are based on an open-system concept, their storage is designed to be as easy to expand in the future, as the system is to install now, into both heterogeneous and homogeneous network environments. Task-optimised, high performance NAS solution The IBM NAS 300 is a tightly integrated collection of powerful subsystems assembled into a single appliance. Preloaded with optimised software, the IBM NAS 300 provides superior NAS support for the departmental or smallenterprise environment. This dual-engine model is designed to operate 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. It has a high-performance, fault-tolerant design with redundant engines and robust Fibre Channel hubs that minimise downtime resulting from the failure of any single element of the storage system. Windows Powered OS; Preconfigured and tuned for storage-specific tasks, designed to maximise compatibility with other Windows systems and improve performance and reliability. Failover protection; Fault-tolerant design helps protect against engine failure for increased uptime, providing continuous access to data. 31 Network Attached Storage 300
Scalability; Allows increase in storage capacity as needs grow. Affordability; Provides a low initial investment and low total cost of ownership for either a smallenterprise or departmental environment. Versatility; Multiprotocol support that works within your existing environment and provides flexibility in the future for both Windows and UNIX clients. Reliability; Hot-swap, redundant power supplies, hard disk drives, and Fibre Channel hubs, as well as redundant engines and Advanced Systems Management help protect against system downtime. Performance; Provides excellent performance for Windows users and exceptional overall performance for multiprotocol environments. Data protection and backup; Persistent Storage Manager creates True Image views that allow instant file and volume restorals Simplified installation; Provides simplified installation to deliver storage quickly, without tying up valuable IT resources. Multiprotocol Support The IBM NAS 300 is designed for use in both enterprise and departmental environments with fileserving requirements across Windows or heterogeneous Windows and UNIX clients. Because of its multiple protocol support of CIFS (Windows), NFS (UNIX), HTTP, FTP, AppleTalk, and NetWare, the IBM NAS 300 eliminates the need for separate servers for each protocol and enables clients to share files with a protocol other than their own. The IBM NAS 300 is well suited to the following mission-critical tasks: Remote or centralised order entry Payroll file storage and processing Accounts receivable storage and processing Serving of Web-based video and data files for ISPs with "up-time commitments Storage for SSPs and ASPs for client bulk storage and client workfile storage, respectively 24 x 7 environments. Customer support 32
High-reliability design Because the IBM NAS 300 is designed for 24 x 7 operations, it incorporates a variety of highreliability, high-availability features. This model incorporates hot-swap, redundant power supplies, hard disk drives and Fibre Channel hubs, as well as redundant engines for failover protection. With this design, the IBM NAS 300 enhances your organisation's ability to continue operating even if a subsystem failure occurs. This model also provides the following features found in Advanced Systems Management to ensure the maximum amount of uptime for your system:. Light-Path Diagnostics for quick determination of a failed part through LEDs. Predictive Failure Analysis monitoring on CPUs, memory, fans and power supplies with user-selectable alert levels. Remote connect for automated paging The optional Remote Supervisor PCI adapter also allows network alerts through IBM Director. High-level performance The IBM NAS 300 is designed to provide exceptional Windows performance and excellent Windows/UNIX performance for multiprotocol environments. Its powerful dual engines and Fibre Channel hubs bring high performance, robustness and power to NAS processing. With both engines actively involved in meeting client demand, this model is designed for maximum dual-computing performance in support of data-intensive or mission-critical applications. Such uses as video file serving, order entry, payroll, accounts receivable, customer support, as well as online storage for storage service providers (SSPs) and application service providers (ASPs), can all be fulfilled by the IBM NAS 300. 33 Network Attached Storage 300
Advanced data protection The IBM NAS 300 provides up to 250 persistent True Image views of a virtual drive's file data. Using Persistent Storage Manager (PSM), these point-in-time views can be created on a scheduled basis, and with the proper permissions, users can restore previous file levels without administrator involvement. Administrators can also restore entire drives and volumes in a single step, saving precious IT time by eliminating the need to drag and drop thousands of files back to the original location. By incorporating its own open file manager, PSM helps provide the safe and consistent backup of in-use files. The open file manager virtually eliminates system access issues during backup, allowing 24 x 7 availability to data. Persistent Storage Manager provides: Protection against accidental file deletions Client and administrator file restorals Administrator single-step volume and drive restorations Continued access to files during backups. 24 x 7 data access Preloaded system software The IBM Network Attached Storage 300 is preloaded with tightly integrated base operating and system software. This preloaded software simplifies the installation, configuration and management of the IBM NAS 300 compared to general-purpose servers and other storage systems. The software is loaded to the engine's hard disk drive with a backup copy provided on CD-ROM. In addition to its operating system and NAS application programming, the provided software includes:. Universal Manageability Services (Web- based GUI) and Microsoft Terminal Services for local or remote setup and administration Windows NT Backup Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility for headless setup and configuration IBM Director agent for system administration Tivoli Storage Manager client for storage management and backups.
