Course Information The Diabetes Nurse Educator program is highly sought after by health professionals interested in supporting patients and families with the management and control of diabetes. The course is divided into two modules in where the nurses achieve competencies within diabetes and diabetes related complications and diabetes management, and communication with patients with diabetes and their relatives. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this educational activity, the course will enable the nurses to: Be an active and progressive member of the diabetes team in the wards or the clinics. Strengthen and develop knowledge and competences within diabetes, prevention, screening and treatment of diabetes complications and diabetes management. Reinforce the importance of lifestyle and behavioral changes. Ensure continuity and adherence in the treatment of diabetes. Communicate more efficiently with the persons with diabetes and their relatives. Promote health, problem solving for daily living and evaluation of the result. Course Content Module I (October 18-22, 2015 - Dubai) The purpose of module 1 is to strengthen and develop knowledge and competences within diabetes care and diabetes management including prevention, screening and treatment of acute and chronic diabetes complications. Highlighted Topics Risk factors for development of type 2 diabetes and prevention of type 2 diabetes Diabetes types, diagnosis and treatment options of different types of diabetes Symptoms of diabetes, prevention and treatment of acute diabetes complications: hypo and hyperglycemia and ketoacidos Prevention, screening and treatment of macrovascular disease, hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcer Lifestyle and behavioral changes Incorporating nutritional management into lifestyle Incorporating physical activity into lifestyle Diabetes self-management education Diabetes and pregnancy Management of diabetes across the ages and stages of life Treatment goals Blood glucose control in type 1 and type 2 diabetes Management of diabetes devices for insulin injection and blood glucose measurement hands-on-experience Integration of psychosocial needs and cultural background into the daily life of people with diabetes Module II (Jan 31 Feb 4, 2016 - Abu Dhabi) The purpose of module 2 is to train the nurses in communication skills and use of educational tools. Highlighted Topics The persons life with diabetes Psychosocial needs of people with diabetes and their family members Assessment of psychosocial concerns Communication with people with diabetes and their relatives Empowerment of people with diabetes Motivation of people with diabetes A problem solving approach is presented with the use of tools from the empowerment model Worksheets that enable the nurses to create an educational process for people with diabetes. At the end of each module the nurses will undertake a one hour exam.
