CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, FILEY S Page 1 The Messenger October 2014 Greetings, In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, What is it? for they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. (Exodus 16:13-15) Grace and Peace to you from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! In my sermon this past week, I spoke to the importance of having the Exodus story as a reminder and a witness to God s relationship to God s people. God s stance to God s people was one of great patience, providence, and love. When they cried out, which they did often, God responded by giving them the things they needed. No one people, nation, or culture knows the fullness of God and God s love for us, but with our collective stories, we get a bigger picture and sense for the nature and nurture of God. God calls all of us into the story (into relationship) with Him so that his name will be exalted over all other gods we create and so that we know how precious we are to Him despite the vastness of the universe. As we are on our own journey, discovering our God s relationship to us, it is important for us to gather together to share our story. As a congregation, we have selected the following passage to be a guiding path for our walk together in mission and ministry over the next year: For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. (Matthew 18:20) To begin our discussions and our story, I d like to highlight a meditation I received this week from Fr. Richard Rohr about gathering a gathering in which we are all very familiar. He writes: The Last Supper of Jesus was a Passover meal of deep table fellowship with Jesus and his closest followers that evolved into the formatted, ritualized meal of bread and wine that many of us enjoy today. The first disciples soon came to understand it as a way of gathering, as the way to define their reality and their relationship to one another and with Jesus. It became, already in the first centuries after Jesus death and resurrection, a powerful symbol of unity, of giving and sharing, of allowing the breaking of self and giving the self over for the world. It was the secret ritual by which the community defined itself and held itself together in its essential message. Frankly, most people have never been ready for its radically demanding message of solidarity with both suffering and resurrection. Yes, we are to recognize Jesus himself in the Eucharist, but we are also to recognize the living Body of Christ, too (1 Corinthians 11:29). There is no true Eucharist without a living assembly. The Eucharist was meant to be a sacrificial meal in which the Body recognized itself, defined itself, and declared its social identity and its central purpose, which was to continue the life and body of Jesus in space and time, to live in a new world order of true sisterhood and brotherhood (meal), and of redemptive suffering and solidarity (sacrifice). It is not just Jesus own sacrifice that we are recalling, but also our agreement to participate in the same! It is not just the human incarnation in Jesus that we are remembering, but that this mystery of incarnation is continued in space, time, and the physical universe itself (e.g., ordinary elements of bread and wine). He finally realized that Jesus was fully identifying the people Paul was killing with himself! They were one and the same! This deep identity between human beings and the body and soul of the earthly Christ became absolute and then practical truth for Paul. Then this was communicated and experienced by sharing in the ritual meal of Eucharist: We eat who we are! as St. Augustine so boldly put it. (Richard Rohr s Daily Meditation, The Living Body of Christ, Sept. 22, 2014) Often we believe that we can experience God on our own out on the golf course, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, playing e-box or play station, lying in bed, but that isn t true. To experience God we need to gather gather with others in a common meal, or study, or worship, or work, or prayer. Exodus tells the story of a God who responds in community. As Richard Rohr points out, Eucharist is an excellent way in which we build relationship with the living God, Jesus Christ, and each other. There are other ways to experience a God who is among us now and not just a God who lived in the past. There are several studies (Book and Bible) going on right now. What other ways might we gather and build relationships? This is our challenge over the next year finding ways to gather in Jesus name to build relationships with each other and experiencing our living LORD in our midst. If you think of ways in which we are already doing this or ways in which you would like to gather in Jesus name, please let someone from council know so that we might pursue it. And if you experience a gathering in which you felt God s presence among the group, please share that with me and with others. This is our call to witness in the world to a God who is not dead, but very much alive, listening to our cries, and providing us with manna the bread from heaven. CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, FILEY S Page 9 Highlights Have you ever wondered where the money goes when we as individuals or as Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations make donations to Lutheran Disaster Response International? Boots on the Ground! Lutherans wish to respond generously to global emergencies when we become aware of them, yet often we do not know the best avenue to get our funds where the need is most critical, and we wonder how effective our giving really is. Well, guess what? When you give to organizations such as Lutheran Disaster Response International and Lutheran World Relief (LWR), you can be assured that your generosity is making an immediate difference. For example, LWR already has "boots on the ground" in the response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The Ebola outbreak has already Photo credit: EC/ECHO/Jean-Louis Mosser, on Flickr.com resulted in 2,288 deaths in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, a roughly 50% mortality out of the 4,269 cases of victims infected with this virus. Lutherans have long made a difference in Liberia. In fact, both the Curran and Phebe hospitals were established in Liberia in the 1920's by the Lutheran Church. The Phebe Hospital is the largest public health facility in Liberia. Today, both facilities are right in the middle of this epidemic and struggling to maintain effective staffing. In August the ELCA gave $10,000 in humanitarian assistance to the Lutheran Church in Liberia, including personal protective equipment, allowing the medical staff to be protected from the virus as they care for victims. This money was given through the Lutheran Disaster Response International to the Lutheran Church in Liberia. The facilities that give the care, established by the Lutheran Church, ARE already present in these countries. Donations we give go to where the need is. Remember the global mission field in your giving. Our knowledge of stewardship has grown leaps and bounds, and I know this will impact our own giving and hopefully the stewardship of others as we implement what we ve learned. Thank you to Kris Kiefer for doing the children s sermon while I was away. Thank you Rolla for agreeing to lead the adult Sunday school class through Ecclesiastes. Thanks to Jerry for taking so much personal time and showing the school house before its sale. Jean, I m so appreciative of your help with the second service! You ve been a big blessing to me cleaning up from the first service, setting the table for the second, coming back to help clean up! Thank you for all the little extras you do! Everyone has the opportunity to Rent-the-Book for $1.00. Keep it as long as you like and return it for someone else to enjoy. All proceeds will go to the building fund. On the book rental shelves you will find a variety of murder mysteries, romance novels, non-fiction, and inspirational books. If the book you rent is one that the owner wants returned, please note that rental in the little red notebook on the top shelf (next to the money box) so that when it is time to return it to its owner, we will be able to track it down.
