What is VSS? VSS = Volume Shadow Copy Service Framework to enable volume backups while applications continue to write to the volumes Federated, application-integrated, storage-integrated operations VSS requestors, VSS writers, and VSS providers communicate to create and restore volume shadow copies A shadow copy of a volume duplicates all the data held on that volume at one well-defined instant in time 35 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

VSS Roles Tivoli Storage, IBM Software Group Requestors An application that t requests that t a volume shadow copy be taken Example: A backup application, like TSM Wit Writers An application or service that stores persistent information on disk Examples: SQL Server, Exchange Server, Oracle Server Providers A component that manages running volumes and creates shadow copies of them on demand Three (3) types of providers: System, Software, Hardware Example: Disk Subsystem, such as SVC, NetApp, EMC, DS8000 Microsoft delivers System Provider as part of the operating system 36 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

VSS Infrastructure VSS Volume Shadow Requestor Copy Service VSS Writers Example: TSM Examples: Exchange Server VSS System Provider VSS Software Provider VSS Hardware Provider SQL Server Oracle Server Volumes holding data 37 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

TSM for Copy Services - Functional Objectives Fast Backups - Perform on-line backups of the Exchange Server at snapshot speeds. Off-loaded Backups - Off-load the backup of data to the TSM Server storage pools to another machine. Fast Recovery - Perform very fast restores from Exchange Server backups. Restore from local disk avoiding media mounts Restore through volume snapshot TSM Management of Snapshot Backups Apply TSM policy to control number of snapshot versions and automatically release/reuse disk space when version limit exceeded Integrated User Interface - Integrate the snapshot operations and legacy backup API operations into the same user interface. 38 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

TSM for Copy Services - VSS Backup Functionality Backup types: FULL, COPY Backup granularity is at the "Storage Group" level. Backups are managed through TSM Server policy. Backups can be stored on local disk, the TSM Server, or both specify different policy settings for each storage location specify different policy settings for different backup types (Full, Copy) Data movement to TSM Storage can be off-loaded to a secondary machine requires a VSS hardware provider that supports transportable shadow copy volumes 42 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

TSM for Copy Services - VSS Restore Functionality Restore granularity is at the storage group or individual database levell Standard restore paths for VSS backups VSS Restore - Restore from TSM Server storage VSS Fast Restore - Restore via file copy from mounted shadow copy image Additional special restore paths developed by IBM for SVC, and DS6000, and DS8000 VSS Instant Restore FlashCopy shadow copy image to production volume 43 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

TSM for Copy Services - Backup Flow High-level steps for performing a VSS backup: 1. Customer initiates iti t the backup via the CLI or GUI. 2. DP/Exchange validates state of Exchange server objects. 3. DP/Exchange verifies that VSS service is running and Exchange Writer is available via the TSM DSMAgent (the TSM VSS Requestor). 4. TSM DSMAgent enumerates the backup components thru the VSS Writer. 5. TSM DSMAgent performs the VSS snapshot backup preparation stage. 6. TSM DSMAgent initiates the VSS snapshot. 7. TSM DSMAgent performs a consistency/integrity t it check on the VSS snapshot backup (via ESEUTIL /k). 8. TSM DSMAgent (optionally) backs up the data and metadata to a TSM Server. This is the point where the movement of data to the TSM Server could be offloaded to an alternate machine running a DSMAgent. 9. TSM DSMAgent marks the backup "complete" in VSS. 44 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services

TSM for Copy Services - Restore Flow High-level steps for performing a VSS snapshot restore are: 1. Customer initiates the restore via the CLI or GUI. 2. DP/Exchange validates state of Exchange server objects 3. DP/Exchange verifies that VSS service is running and Exchange Writer is available via the TSM DSMAgent (the TSM VSS Requestor). 4. DP/Exchange dismounts all databases within the chosen storage group. 5. TSM DSMAgent restores meta data needed to prepare for the restore 6. TSM DSMAgent performs the VSS snapshot restore preparation stage. 7. TSM DSMAgent restores the backup data 8. TSM DSMAgent marks the restore complete in VSS. 9. DP/Exchange mounts databases to run recovery. 45 TSM for Copy Services and TSM for Advanced Copy Services
