15 Business Continuity Plan Where to Begin? Formalize BCP: Organization to set policy, governance & reporting. Management commitment & support as most critical elements. Integrate BCP into project lifecycle to identify recover needs. What s the difference between: Business Continuity Plan (BCP) vs. Disaster Recovery (DR) - BCP keeps your business operations running. - DR is process of recovery / resumption of business from major disruption.

17 Disaster Recovery DR plan focuses on getting back to normal after major disruption. Consider below two factor when you calculate how much would cost your business during downtime Recovery Time Objective (RTO): The amount of time that it takes to restart business operations, in our case it s EMS. The shorter the downtime, the better. Recovery from tape is slower, recovery from disk is faster. Recovery Point Objective (RPO): How much data can we afford to loose during disaster. The smaller the data loss window, the better. Shorter the RTO & RPO window, the implementation costs is expensive. The longer window for loss of data is less expensive. It s a balance between the implementation cost and window for data loss, depends on the business operations. 24 Experience Verify (test, test, test) the accuracy of the recovery procedures and identify deficiencies. Educate, prepare & train people with BCP & DR procedures. Conduct drills to be prepared for worst. Build teams of subject matter experts. Attend training classes, seminars before choose vendor. Consult utilities who have already implement so that you don t reinvent the wheel. Try and Test before you buy technology. Balance between the cost and window of data loss. BCP & DR is work in progress (process), keep reevaluating and make changes as the business model changes.
