3 FROM THE PRINCIPAL The powerful use of informa on technologies is an essen al skill in our world. Northcote High School has always placed a high value on the academic development of its students and is aware of the need for the seamless integra on of informa on technology into our students educa on. Our focus is on building student capacity and extending the skills, knowledge and a ributes to enable them to ac vely par cipate in the world beyond school as competent thriving adults with informa on, communica on and social skills. As you know, having a 1:1 device on hand all the me does not of itself improve learning. Students already have their knowledge of computer opera ons at their finger ps. It is important to teach students to use ICT in innova ve and crea ve ways to enhance their learning and be engaged in higher order thinking through the use of ICT which will transform their learning. Northcote High School commenced its 1:1 program in 2012, with the successful introduc on of 1:1 laptops for all students in Year 9 & 10. In 2015, this program will include all students from years 7 12 with a 1: 1 device at NHS. We believe that giving students immediate access to technology will help engage them in the learning process in new ways and is an exci ng opportunity for our students who will become increasingly skilled at using technology to access and present informa on, to problem solve and to work collabora vely. 4 GOALS OF THE PROGRAM 1:1 In 2015 all students will have a 1:1 computer device. Our 1:1 Program will provide students the opportunity to be effec ve digital learners who will become confident, crea ve and produc ve in a digital world. New students in year 10 and 11 will be expected to purchase a recommended school device. Families will have a number of choices as to the dura on of insurance, and payment method. Students will use their laptops in class and at home to support their learning. We believe that giving students immediate access to technology in a one to one program will help engage them in the learning process in new and crea ve ways and become increasing skilled at using technology to access and present informa on, to problem solve and work collabora vely. Goals of the 1:1 Program As a broad guide, the following are the goals for the ini a ve: Laptops will be used to facilitate learning by allowing students to: Access, use, create and publish digital and online informa on. Develop knowledge, understanding and skills through crea vity, cri cal thinking and problem solving. Collaborate with others Communicate their knowledge and learning in a variety of ways. Students use the laptops as a tool to manage their work and learning. Students will develop age-appropriate ICT skills and understandings, including the responsibili es of online ci zenship. Students will accept responsibility for: Their personal ac ons when using ICT The care and func onality of their laptop computer. Why have we selected the Laptop PC as the 1:1 device op on? The Lenovo Laptop PC is well suited to learning environments. It was chosen for the following benefits: Compact size, ease of transportability and design means it can be used in almost any learning situa on. The long ba ery life will allow it to be used all day at school without recharging. A device that could be a replacement for paper textbooks A common tool for each student that would meet most of their day to day technology needs and that would help engage students in learning 24/7. A devise that would be easy to use and easy to provide technical support. In essence, the Laptop PC is the ideal device for our middle and senior students for anywhere any me learning.
5 LAPTOP PROVISION 2015: Parent Purchase Model Families will purchase the Lenovo X230 Laptop with laptop bag, purchased through the school with a common so ware program, edustar base image (comprising a number of educa onal and u lity so ware applica ons) installed, with addi onal costs for extended warranty, insurance and finance if required. Why a school selected device program? The main advantage for families in purchasing a school selected device is that we can deliver to each student a laptop with the edustar so ware image which contains a suite of so ware such as Microso Office and specialist educa onal so ware, at no cost to families. This provides a common opera ng environment that can be supported across the school network. Northcote High School is not in a posi on to support mul ple laptop configura ons in the form of students bringing their own device from home. 7 DIGITAL RESOURCES Digital Textbooks students in years 10 There will be some cost offset to families with the movement to electronic texts at Year 10 (2015) and this is es mated to be approximately $200 per annum. In 2015, students at Year 10 level will access the majority of their textbook resource needs through the purchase of Jacaranda s Digital Resource Suite. This will include the following tles: Maths Quest 10 for the Australian Curriculum ebook plus (Mathema cs) assesson Maths Quest 10 for the Australian Curriculum (Mathema cs) Science Quest 10 for the Australian Curriculum ebook plus (Science) assesson Science Quest for the Australian Curriculum (Science) Quest for Good Health ebook plus (Health & PE) English is for the Australian Curriculum (English) History Alive 10 for the Australian Curriculum ebook plus (Humani es) Geography + Economics & Ci zenship 10 VELS ebook plus My World History Atlas (Humani es) My World Atlas (Humani es) Art These resources will be purchased through Jacaranda s ebooks portal. Informa on regarding this portal will be provided with the booklist. Students will be provided with logon details for their Jacaranda account at the end of 2014, or once payment has been made. This will ensure that students will be able to access these resources upon receipt of the laptop and have downloaded these resources for the start of the school year.
8 TECHNICAL SUPPORT In the event of accidental damage, faults or issues with the laptop, technical support will be provided from the school. Lenovo Warranty does not cover accidental damage, only manufacturer s defects. Accidental Laptop Damage Students to bring laptop to the IT Office for triage. If it is a manufacturers defect, it will be rec fied at no cost. If it is determined that the laptop has sustained accidental damage, students will collect a form outlining the process to be followed. Generally the process is as follows: 1. Parents will go on line to lodge a claim form for accidental damage. 2. Insurance claims will incur a $100 excess. Once that is paid, parents will be issued with a receipt number that students will bring to the IT Office with their laptop. 3. A satchel is posted out to collect laptop from school, and will be sent off for repair. 4. Repaired laptop will be returned to school and students no fied that their laptop is ready for collec on. Network and So ware Image issues with Laptop 1. Students experiencing any so ware issues with their laptop (ie. lack of network connec vity, problems with computer programs, etc) need to take their laptop to the IT Office in the main building. 2. Here one of our IT Technicians will evaluate the problem and rec fy the issues or refer it on for specialist assistance if required.
9 ACCEPTABLE USE Northcote High School place a high value on the development and maintenance of posi ve, healthy and respec ul rela onships and a suppor ve environment for all members of the school community. The responsibility and expecta on of digital ci zenship It is the expecta on that students will be responsible digital ci zens when par cipa ng in the, using the schools ICT and their home or mobile devices. Students will be supported in developing digital ci zenship through understanding the ethical, cultural and societal issues related to Informa on and Communica on Technologies. Students will prac ce responsible use of ICT and develop posi ve a tudes towards ICT that foster lifelong learning, personal growth, collabora on and produc vity. As part of their digital ci zenship students are required to read and agree to a Digital Technologies Acceptable Use Agreement (DTAUA) and the NHS Computer Code of Conduct. Acceptable Use Agreement (DTAUA) & NHS Electronic Device Code of Conduct All students from Years 9-12 are invited to be part of the 1:1 Laptop Program. All students and a parent/carer are required to read, understand and sign an Acceptable Use Agreement at the commencement of each school year. This governs the requirements and expecta ons under which students use the school computers and the school portal. This is a standard expecta on, not only from Northcote High School but also the Department of Educa on and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). Parents/Carers must be quite clear about the expecta ons within this agreement and the consequences arising from it and the NHS Electronic Device Code of Conduct. The school will, of course, support students to understand how to care for their computers and to understand how to be responsible digital ci zens. CYBER SAFETY Northcote High School believes that teaching cyber safety and responsible online behavior is essential and is best taught in partnership between home and school. Students are spending increasing amounts of time online, learning and collaborating. To be safe online and to gain the greatest benefit from the opportunities provided through an online environment, students need to do the right thing by themselves and others online. The school promotes the values of respect and responsibility, expecting students to behave appropriately on line. At home, we recommend that parents make time to set guidelines around use of 1:1 devices. Ensure that all Internet activities occur in a shared space not your child s bedroom. Negotiate appropriate times for online activities and use of mobile phones. For further support with online issues students can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800. 10 FAQ 1. Who can I contact if I have further ques ons? Ques ons regarding the 1:1 can be emailed to gibbings.kate.p@edumail.vic.gov.au or hoole.kevin.t@edumail.vic.gov.au.your inquiry will be responded to as quickly as possible. 2. Will a student be using their laptop in every subject every day? A student will not necessarily be required to use the computer at all mes. The use of computers will take place alongside a range of learning ac vi es. However the laptop is an essen al learning tool that must be available to be u lised when required and therefore should be taken to all classes unless specifically advised. 3. Where will a student store their laptop when it is not in use? Eg. Lunch me Students must store and secure their laptop, in their protec ve case, in their locker during recess and lunch mes. If students are unable to secure their laptop at these mes they should report to the appropriate sub-school office. Students will need to store their laptops in their lockers before Physical Educa on prac cal classes unless otherwise instructed by their class teacher. 4. Can a student add their own so ware to their laptop? All educa onal so ware required by the student is preinstalled and there should be no need for further so ware to be installed. Only so ware licensed to the school or the student is to be installed. Computers with unlicensed so ware will be removed from the student, wiped and reimaged with the school s licenced so ware. 5. What is the process if my child exits the school? The laptop is the property of family and therefore will be taken with the student. Families will be responsible for any finance agreements pertaining to the device. 6. Is my child expected to take their laptop home every day? Yes, students are expected to take the laptop to and from school each day. This will enable them to fully u lise the device at home and at school. It is expected that the laptops will be charged overnight ready for a full days use at school. Parents are asked to ensure that the computer is used responsibly and cared for appropriately in the home environment. Laptops must be transported within their protec ve cases inside the student s school bag to and from school. 7. Can I recharge my laptop at school? No. It is expected that the laptop is fully charged upon arrival at school and will not need charging during the day. Student ba ery chargers are to remain at home and not be bought to school. Students must be aware that the use of the laptop outside class me may impact on the ability to remain charged for all classes.
11 FAQ 8. Can other people use the laptop? While it is a family owned device, the laptop is required for the student s educa on, so it is recommended that it is not used by anybody else. 9. Can the laptop be taken overseas? Parents are advised to check the insurance provisions they have selected on the device to determine what cover is provided. 10. Can my child access games on their laptop? Games are not to be accessed through the school network or used or downloaded on the laptop at school. Inappropriate, violent and other unacceptable material not in keeping with the ethos of the school must not be accessed or used under any circumstances. 11. Will the student files on the laptop be private? Students can expect their laptops to be periodically inspected and monitored for inappropriate usage. Students and parents need to be aware that files stored locally on the laptops or on school servers are not private. 12. What happens if my child leaves their laptop at home? Students will be significantly disadvantaged as they will not be permi ed to borrow the schools laptops. Con nual failure will led to interven on and consequences outlined in the NHS Electronic Device Code of Conduct. 13. What happens if the ba ery goes flat? Students are required to bring their laptop to school fully charged every day. If the ba ery runs out they will need to take their ba ery to the IT Helpdesk in the Library and hire a replacement ba ery while their ba ery is recharged for them. This service will incur a fee. 14. Does my home need Internet access? No. Students will be able to access the informa on they need when they are at school, and use the so ware and textbooks loaded on the laptop at home. Even when not connected to the Internet, laptops are s ll very useful tools for learning. Of course, if you have Internet access at home, you are welcome to connect the laptop to your Internet connec on.
12 SAFETY & SECURITY At School Make sure that your laptop is either in your possession or locked away in a secure area (locker) at all mes during recess and lunch me. Your locker must be secured with a sturdy lock. Do Not Leave your laptop una ended for even a short period of me. Share your password with anyone. Leave your laptop logged on when not in use. Place it near an external window. Exposure to view from outside may tempt would-be thieves. Leave your laptop in a vehicle, even if the laptop is out of sight and the vehicle is locked. At Home Find a safe place to store your laptop so that it is inaccessible by small children and difficult to locate in the event of a burglary. Ensure basic household security measures are followed at all mes, such as locking doors and windows. Do Not Leave your laptop in view of outsiders even while using it. Leave your laptop accessories lying around. They adver se the presence of a computer device. Transit When travelling in the car or on public transport: Avoid being seen when pu ng your laptop into the car or taking it out. Lock your laptop in the boot and camouflage it. Ensure the laptop is placed inside its protec ve case. On public transport keep your laptop in its protec ve case, inside your school bag and keep the school bag with you at all mes.
13 ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT Part A: School Statement At Northcote High School, we: Support the rights of all members of the school community to engage in and promote a safe, inclusive and suppor ve learning environment. Respond to issues or incidents that have the poten al to impact on the wellbeing of our students. Have policies in place that outline the values of the school and expected behaviours when students use digital technologies and the internet. Educate our students to be safe and responsible users of digital technologies. Raise our students awareness of issues such as online privacy, intellectual property and copyright. Supervise students when using digital technologies for educa onal purposes. Know that some online ac vi es are illegal and as such we are required to report this to the police. Provide parents/guardians with a copy of this agreement. Support parents/guardians to understand the importance of safe and responsible use of digital technologies, the poten al issues that surround their use and strategies they can implement at home to support their child. Provide a filtered Internet service but acknowledge that full protec on from inappropriate content can never be guaranteed.
14 ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT Part B: Student Declara on When I use digital technologies I agree to be a safe, responsible and ethical user at all mes by: Respec ng others and communica ng with them in a suppor ve manner; never wri ng or par cipa ng in online bullying (for example, forwarding messages and suppor ng others in harmful, inappropriate or hur ul online behaviours) Not interfering with the network systems and security, the data of another user or a emp ng to log into the network with the user name or password of another student. Not bringing to school or downloading unauthorised programs, including games. Protec ng my privacy; not giving out personal details, including my full name, telephone number, address passwords or images. Protec ng the privacy of others; never pos ng or forwarding their personal details or images without consent. Talking to a teacher if l personally feel uncomfortable or unsafe online, or if l see others par- cipa ng in unsafe, inappropriate or hur ul online behaviours. Carefully considering the content that l upload or post online; this is o en viewed as a personal reflec on of who l am. In addi on, when I use my personal mobile phone, I agree to be a safe, responsible and ethical user at all mes. Respec ng others and communica ng with them in a suppor ve manner; never verbally or in wri ng par cipa ng in bullying (for example, harassing phone calls/text messages, suppor ng others in harmful, inappropriate or hur ul online behaviours by forwarding messages). Keeping the device on silent during class mes; only making or answering calls or messages outside of school hours (except for approved learning purposes). Inves ga ng the terms & condi ons (e.g. age restric ons, consent requirements). If my understanding is unclear I will seek further explana on from a trusted adult. Confirming that I meet the stated terms and condi ons; comple ng the required registra- on processes with factual responses about personal details. Respec ng the privacy of others; only taking photos or recording sound or video at school when I have formal consent or it is part of an approved lesson. Obtaining appropriate (wri en) consent from individuals who appear in images or sound and video recordings before forwarding them to other people or pos ng/uploading them to online spaces. Handling the ICT device with care and no fying a teacher if it is damaged or requires a en on. Abiding by copyright and intellectual property regula ons. If necessary, l will request permission to use images, text, audio and video and cite references.
15 ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT Part C: Condi ons of use Equipment Students must fully charge the laptop each night in prepara on for use the following day. Power cords must be le at home. Limited numbers of fully charged ba eries may be hired from the library. Ba eries must be returned to Library before students leave NHS for the day. Students will be required to replace lost or damaged chargers. When a laptop is replaced under warranty, its type of replacement will depend on the respec ve manufacturer s warranty. All repairs must be performed by the NHS IT Department. Damage or loss of equipment Parents/guardians and students should be aware that files stored on the device, or on the schools server are not private. Access to the laptop must be granted to the IT staff as and when required. All devices and ba eries are covered by a manufacturer s warranty. The warranty covers manufacturer s defects. It does not cover accidental, malicious or careless damage. Any problems, vandalism, damage, loss or the of the device should be reported immediately to the school. This includes any unauthorised personalisa on of the device such as scribing, adding s ckers etc. Standards for device The student is responsible for: Adhering to the school s Acceptable Use Policy when using the machine at home and school. Backing up data securely Maintaining se ngs for spam and filtering that have been set as a Departmental standard. Ensuring that only fully licenced so ware is installed on the computer. Ensuring that the school affixed asset label and student iden fica on s cker remains on the device. In case of suspected the, a police report must be made by the family and a copy of the report provided to the insurer, if the family has taken out the insurance.
