In addition the course will focus on the role of private security in the protection of commercial and industrial operations against profit loss. DETAILED COURSE OUTLINE (Class by Class) 1. History Professionalism, Ethics, Public Relations, Opportunities (4 Hours) Development of Private Security. Define Professionalism. Describe proper deportment and dress. Explain the importance of ethics in the security profession and examples of where ethics may be challenged. Give examples of security guard behavior that are ethical or unethical. 2.General Duties and Responsibilities.(4 Hours) Describe the difference between public and private security. Compare the relative advantages of contract and proprietary security Discuss security's place in an organization List the man made and natural hazards which private security seeks to provide Describe the eight forms of protection provided. State the ten duties which form the foundation of security guard work. 3. Relations with public law enforcement agencies. (1 Hour) Discuss the organizational structure and role of public police forces in Canada Explain the authority of public law enforcement authorities on private property State the general principles governing private security and public police relations Discuss how best to work with public law enforcement agencies protection. 4. Introduction to law (3 Hours) Define law as it applies to the needs of a security guard Describe the function of law Describe the basic source of a security guard's power of arrest Explain the five duties of the security guard when arresting Describe the main features and differences of summary conviction offenses, indictable offenses and dual offenses State the section 494 Criminal Code requirements regarding citizens power of arrest Explain the difference between civil law and criminal law and how it effects private security when performing their duties. 5. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (2 Hours) Describe the purpose of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Explain the features of Section 7 C.O.R. (Life, Liberty and Security of the Person) and how those features may affect the security guard Describe Section 8 C.O.R. 15 Traffic control and Workers Compensation Board regulations (1 1/2 Hours) Describe areas where security guards may be called upon to direct traffic Identify the clothing and equipment requirements for day and night use State authority which permits the direction of traffic Describe the difficulties that can be encountered by a security guard while directing traffic Describe how to use appropriate hand signals to direct pedestrian traffic Describe appropriate hand gestures to execute traffic signals for stopping, starting, left and right turns Describe how to use appropriate hand signals to direct vehicles for traffic control and parking 16.
