DUAL MASTER DEGREE PROGRAM PROPOSAL PUBLIC HEALTH AND LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES The dual degree in Public Health and Latin American Studies will be granted upon the completion of a minimum of 63-69 units in Public Health and Latin American Studies and by meeting the minimum Portuguese and Spanish language requirements. The dual degree program allows a student to earn a Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies (M.A.) and a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in three years. Latin American Studies (LAS) Requirements The Center for Latin American Studies offers an interdisciplinary M.A. program combining two fields of study, Spanish and Portuguese language skills, two core interdisciplinary research seminars and optional electives or a thesis. Students will need a total of 36 graduate units to successfully complete the program. The LAS M.A. requirements are summarized below: 3 units for LAS 500 - Introduction to Latin American Studies 15 units in primary discipline or thematic area 9 units international public health courses with assignments focusing on Latin America or U.S. Mexico border 3 units for LAS 596a - Research Seminar Language requirement met by Spanish 330 and Portuguese 305 or Spanish 251 and Portuguese 325 or equivalency exam. 6 units to be completed through: 6 unit thesis or 6 unit Public Health/LAS internship Master of Public Health Requirements The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health offers an interdisciplinary Master s program in Public Health. Students need a minimum of 42-46 units, depending on the area of concentration selected, to complete the M.P.H. degree. The M.P.H. requirements are summarized below: Core Courses (16 units) CPH 573a Basic Principles of Epidemiology CPH 574 Public Health Policy and Management CPH 575 Environmental and Occupational Health CPH 576a Biostatistics for Public Health CPH 577 Sociocultural and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health CPH 596n Internship Preparation Course Internship (3-6 units) CPH 593a Internship Required Concentration/Track Courses (9-18 units) The list of required courses for each concentration can be found on the MEZCOPH website. These requirements may change from year to year and are specific to the year of acceptance into the M.P.H program. Refer to the appropriate MEZCOPH Academic Catalog. Selectives and/or Electives (6-15 units) 1

Dual Degree Requirements Dual degree applicants must meet the application deadlines, testing requirements, and submit program fees to each program independently. Academically, students are expected to fulfill the basic requirements of each program incorporating the following modifications. Students enrolled in the dual degree program will complete 21 units of core and concentration courses in the M.P.H. program during their first year of school. This would be followed by one year of graduate coursework in Latin American Studies (a minimum of 18 units) after the first year of M.P.H. coursework. During the first fall semester in the LAS program, all graduate students are required to take a 3-unit seminar (LAS 500) designed to introduce them to Latin American studies and research. A research methods course and a LAS interdisciplinary research seminar (such as LAS 596a) are required at some point during subsequent semesters. The remaining units are completed along with the public health courses in the third year in the program. Up to 9 units of coursework in international public health (considered by advisors in both program to be theoretically relevant to issues concerning Mexico or Latin America) can be counted as an LAS secondary area of concentration. The public health internship experience, if conducted in conjunction with a Latin American institution or with an inter-american focus, can be accepted for 3 to 6 units toward the LAS degree in lieu of thesis or elective course work credit. In summary, a student enrolled in the dual degree program may count 12-15 units of public health credit (9 units of international public health coursework plus 3-6 units of internship) toward the 36 graduate units required for the M.A. in Latin American Studies. Up to 6 units of the LAS M.A. may be counted toward completion of the M.P.H. unit requirement. A table showing the dual degree requirements and a suggested 3-year course sequence follow. 2
