Selectives and/or Electives (6-15 units) 1
Dual Degree Requirements Dual degree applicants must meet the application deadlines, testing requirements, and submit program fees to each program independently. Academically, students are expected to fulfill the basic requirements of each program incorporating the following modifications. Students enrolled in the dual degree program will complete 21 units of core and concentration courses in the M.P.H. program during their first year of school. This would be followed by one year of graduate coursework in Latin American Studies (a minimum of 18 units) after the first year of M.P.H. coursework. During the first fall semester in the LAS program, all graduate students are required to take a 3-unit seminar (LAS 500) designed to introduce them to Latin American studies and research. A research methods course and a LAS interdisciplinary research seminar (such as LAS 596a) are required at some point during subsequent semesters. The remaining units are completed along with the public health courses in the third year in the program. Up to 9 units of coursework in international public health (considered by advisors in both program to be theoretically relevant to issues concerning Mexico or Latin America) can be counted as an LAS secondary area of concentration. The public health internship experience, if conducted in conjunction with a Latin American institution or with an inter-american focus, can be accepted for 3 to 6 units toward the LAS degree in lieu of thesis or elective course work credit. In summary, a student enrolled in the dual degree program may count 12-15 units of public health credit (9 units of international public health coursework plus 3-6 units of internship) toward the 36 graduate units required for the M.A. in Latin American Studies. Up to 6 units of the LAS M.A. may be counted toward completion of the M.P.H. unit requirement. A table showing the dual degree requirements and a suggested 3-year course sequence follow. 2
