Background - Mozambique dairy industry destroyed by 16 year civil war following independence in 1975 - Smallholder dairy did not exist & limited commercial dairy - Land O Lakes awarded funding by USDA for a Smallholder Dairy Development Program (2009-2012) Manica province 5.3m US Dollars - Land O Lakes awarded second funding by USDA for a Mozambique Dairy Development Program (2012-2016) Manica, Sofala and Maputo provinces 13.4m US Dollars
The Projects Manica Smallholder Dairy Development Program GOALS 1. Support rebuilding of Mozambique s dairy herd 2. Increase incomes and employment 3. Increase crop yields through utilization of draft animals for cultivation SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 1. Herd Restocking: to increase the number of dairy and crossbred cattle to increase milk production; 2. Fodder Crop and Pasture Management: to build farmers capacities to maximize milk production from their cows; 3. Animal Husbandry: to increase farmers capacity to care for their animals properly in order to reduce animal losses; 4. Milk Collection and Marketing: assistance to establish producer-level cooperatives and milk collection centers to assure milk enters a cold chain to maintain quality; 5. Animal Traction: to build the capacity of smallholder farmers to effectively use draft power to increase their crop farming productivity
