The Foundation of 'Elimu Mount Elgon' Home for special needs under construction (2012) The Foundation of Elimu Mount Elgon is a non-profit organization with aiming to offer financial and material assistance to projects that support the education and professional training in the Mount Elgon Region, Kwanza District, in Kenya. In 2001 the present chairman of the foundation Mrs. Anke Diepenhorst first went to Kenya to train medical staff on the use of an ultrasound machine at the medical clinic of Dr. Bea Andersen. The clinic was located in a remote area without any infrastructure, on the Ugandan border, 40 km from Kitale. Besides her small, bustling clinic, Bea also headed a primary school which was set up by her in 1998. Dr. Andersen and her husband Bob Andersen run a flower farm in this area as well employing 900 people. The Andersen family has been on this farm since 1922 growing coffee, maize and later avocados, apples and peaches.
The Farm at the slopes of Mount Elgon A small nursery school and a primary school were started in 1998 with 2 classrooms. The school is now complete with 3 ECD classes and 8 primary school classes. Over 800 children have been enrolled in the school. There is also a unit for children with learning disabilities with 20 children. With support from donors in the Netherlands through the foundation Elimu Mount Elgon Andersen Primary School has been developed into a well respected learning institution in the District. For the last 5 years the school has performed very well in the national exams always positioned among the top ten out of nearly 300 schools. Apart from the Andersen Schools the foundation is also involved in the development of other government schools in the District and supports individual students at tertiary training level.
