It crooks your back, it dims your sight, it twists your stomach and your sides." I The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the forms of writing used in early-modern Spanish documents. Students will have access to a rich corpus of digitalized primary documents from the Archivo General de Indias (AGI) in Seville, Spain. This semester the assigned documents will focus on a series of sixteenth-century legal documents that highlight the nature of Spanish governance in Florida and the lives of those who participated in the early conquest and colonization. Students will be assigned to transcribe a series of documents from the AGI. Moreover, the course introduces students to the sources, tools, and interpretative strategies used by historians who examine these records. Grades will be based on class participation, four quizzes, and one lengthy transcription project. Grades will be determined along the following lines: 30% Class Participation and Attendance 40% Quizzes 30% Transcription Project **Note: The plus-minus grading system will be used. 100-93 A; 92-90 A- 89-88 B+; 87-83 B; 82-80 B- 79-78 C+; 77-73 C 72-60 D; 59 and below, F
Goals: Students who successfully complete the course will (1) improve their knowledge of Spanish; (2) be qualified to conduct primary archival research using sixteenth-century Spanish manuscripts (3) broaden their understanding of the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Americas. Course Content Note USFSP s Student Sexual Harassment and Violence policy, following national guidance from the Office of Civil Rights, requires that faculty follow USF policy as a mandatory reporter of any personal disclosure of sexual harassment, abuse, and/or violence related experiences or incidents shared with the faculty member in person, via email, and/or in classroom papers or homework exercises. These disclosures include but are not limited to reports of personal relational abuse, relational/domestic violence, and stalking. While faculty are often able to help students locate appropriate channels of assistance on campus (e.g., see the USFSP Health and Wellness link below), disclosure by the student to the faculty member requires that the faculty member inform appropriate USF channels to help ensure that the student s safety and welfare is being addressed, even if the student requests that the disclosure not be shared. For counseling support and assistance, please see the USFSP, which includes a variety of counseling services that can be accessed at: http://www.usfsp.edu/wellness/ And, the Sexual Assault Victim Assistance Team is a confidential resource for students that does not have a reporting requirement and that can be of great help to students who have experienced sexual assault.
