Here s the typical bullet list of the tips usually offered by the fancy pants lawyers 3 from the big law firms talking down to you at the usual vanilla marketing seminar: Get your name out there Volunteer on committees Publish in Bar Journals Take other people s crappy cases Build a name brand Make sure your stationery and your website have consistent colors Take referral sources out to lunch Use high quality business cards Send a newsletter every couple of months All a bunch of nonsense. In fact, more than nonsense. It s a scheme to keep your marketing average. To add to the insult you usually get someone from the Advertising Ethics Committee who gives a talk that is calculated to scare you into making your marketing bland, boring or worse. In Florida, for example, they pay the committee real money to sit around and try to figure our what sounds (yes, sounds) are allowable in lawyer ads. So, I decided to build a business and put on seminars that I d want to go to, that I d get loads of good information out of - a seminar that not only gives hope for a better future, but actually DELIVERS. This kind of seminar takes a LOT of work to put together, but it delivers WOW! Just so you know, I personally spend over $10,000 a year attending marketing and practice building seminars. (I m not talking $300 a pop either.) The secret is that the seminars I go to aren t run by bar associations or trial lawyer groups. In fact, I m usually the only lawyer there! sites allegedly aren t converting visitors to clients is that the call to action on the site isn t very interesting. Frankly, if you are still hoping that someone will just fill out that contact us form on your site, you are missing the boat on conversion. The Internet is more competitive than the Yellow Pages yet most lawyers have not even begun to scratch the surface with their thinking about what their web site should be doing to literally compel visitors to raise their hands and say MARKET TO ME-SEND ME YOUR GREAT BIG SHOCK AND AWE PACKAGE.
