Master s Degree The Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction offers a variety of courses in many curricular areas, with a specific emphasis on the trends and recent developments in practice, theory and research. The M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction requires a minimum of 31 hours of graduate credits. At least 15 of those hours must be completed within an area of specialization. In addition, three hours in each of the following core areas are required: curriculum teaching and learning diversity instructional technology research and scholarship All students must take the Master s Project (1 hour). Some students must also take the Master s Report (2 hours) or the Master s Thesis (6 hours). The requirements for each core area and for each of these specializations can be found in the Curriculum and Instruction program book at coe.k-state.edu/academics/docs/edci/ms_edci.pdf Graduate Certificate Graduate certificate programs are nondegree credentials designed to provide students with specialized knowledge that is less extensive than, and different from, a master s program. A certificate program represents a focused collection of courses that, when completed, affords the student some record of coherent academic accomplishment in a given discipline or set of related disciplines. Add-on Endorsement Preparation in Kansas A licensed teacher in the state of Kansas may have an endorsement in a specific content area, which validates that the teacher is qualified or knowledgeable in that area. 3

General Information Who is eligible? Professionals in teaching and educational services are eligible to enroll. However, some programs are restricted to those who have a current teaching license. How are courses delivered? Digital Teaching and Learning Master s degree option global.k-state.edu/education/curriculum-instruction/teaching The Digital Teaching and Learning specialty is open to licensed teachers who have a commitment to integrate technology into their instruction to improve student learning experiences. This program emphasizes emerging technologies to provide a broad view of teaching and learning in which the world is the classroom. In this specialty, you will: learn how to apply emerging technologies to instruction translate research into practice analyze, evaluate and foster technology use to create new models of leadership for learning Graduates of this program have taken leadership roles in technology integration and positions in technology-rich schools. Others have become technology directors, technology lead teachers and curriculum technologists. * Current teaching license is required 5

Educational Computing, Design and Online Learning Master s degree option global.k-state.edu/education/curriculum-instruction/program The Educational Computing, Design and Online Learning area of concentration is for educators from all walks of life who want to develop instruction using instructional technologies. In this specialty, you will: study the research and theories behind technology choices develop instructional design knowledge and skills foster online and hybrid learning discuss technology s role in school reform, telementoring and telecollaboration learn about ethical and social issues in technology design project-based learning, informal learning and intentional learning projects (e.g., on the web or in a museum or park) Graduates of this program have become technology directors and instructional designers. Many have also continued with their doctoral study in this area in order to become higher education faculty or administrators at the community college or university level. 6

In this program, you will: increase knowledge and learn new strategies for working with culturally- and linguistically-diverse students learn how to assist these students in continuing to make academic progress while learning the English language understand how to incorporate Biography-Driven Teaching Strategies, which teach the biography of the individual The ESL program provides teachers with the knowledge to excel when working with specialized student populations, as they strive to meet federal and state educational mandates. Reading Specialist Master s degree option Add-on endorsement preparation in Kansas global.k-state.edu/education/reading Reading specialists serve and positively impact a large number of children and young adults and provide support and intervention for struggling readers. In this program, you will: prepare to expand literacy knowledge to individuals and educational institutions through literacy leadership build your experience in teaching reading and differentiating instruction to provide support and intervention for readers at all levels incorporate new materials, strategies and means of assessment into practice Reading specialists can provide ongoing professional development as literacy leaders within schools, benefiting faculty and staff. * Current teaching license is required 8

Online Course Design Graduate certificate global.k-state.edu/education/curriculum-instruction/ online-course-design The Online Course Design Graduate Certificate is a 14-credit-hour program. In this certificate program, you will: understand instructional design models, research, theory, instructional strategies and technologies develop and design online learning courses for workshops, webinars and other technology-enhanced instruction learn best practices in the redesign of existing instruction and the creation and management of instructional development projects and project timelines *Prior to starting this certificate program, students must have completed a 3-credit graduate-level technology class or EDCI 718 Learning Technologies. 9

Effective Practice: Teaching in Today s World Area of study credit and noncredit options global.k-state.edu/education/effective-practice Effective Practice: Teaching in Today s World is a set of online courses for K 12 teachers and paraprofessionals that provides much-needed, high-quality professional development and credit opportunities. In this area of study, you will: learn new information that will make a positive impact for K 12 students extend your content knowledge, instructional skills and pedagogy in a flexible, accessible format prepare and gain support to acquire or renew your teaching license and/or local- or state-mandated paraprofessional credentials participate in additional high-quality online courses for the M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction By meeting these objectives, teachers and paraprofessionals will be prepared to promote effective teaching at multiple levels. Mathematics Education Area of study credit and noncredit options global.k-state.edu/education/curriculum-instruction/ mathematics-education This area of study includes seven math education courses offered online for graduate credit, which fulfill the requirements for an area of specialization in mathematics education as a component of the M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction. Teaching Civics and Government Area of study credit and noncredit options global.k-state.edu/courses/teaching-political-ideas In the Teaching Civics and Government area of study, K 12 teachers will be able to advance their understanding of political ideas and how to teach them. This program satisfies a national need for high-quality professional development in civic education. In this area of study, you will: develop an in-depth understanding of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights and how they impact your life explore the origins of our country s constitutional government, how those ideas developed over time and why they remain important learn strategies for teaching these principles to students The course work in this area of study corresponds to the Center for Civic Education s We the People curriculum and the National Standards for Civics and Government. These courses can be taken for graduate credit and some can be taken as noncredit. 12
