Since 1973 California Attorneys for Criminal Justice has advocated on criminal justice issues, educated practitioners and associated professionals, provided information and resources and a sense of community to lawyers throughout the State of California and the United States. From our initial membership of 60 lawyers, CACJ has grown to become one of the country s largest statewide associations of criminal defense lawyers and allied professionals. The amicus committee has made significant contributions in two recent decisions Missouri v. Seibert (banning delayed Miranda) and People v. Neal (intentional Miranda violation is a factor to be considered in judging voluntariness among many others.) Legislative Advocacy CACJ s legislative program provides the criminal defense bar with a much needed voice in Sacramento. CACJ s Legislative Advocate and Legislative Committee provide continuous and aggressive representation to defeat or modify bad bills and promote bills of importance to the criminal defense bar. Our legislative advocacy program has not only sponsored bills which protect the rights of criminal defendants, but in addition, has prevented many bills curtailing our client s rights from becoming law. Contempt Defense Our Contempt Defense Committee is ready to step in when member attorneys are prosecuted, subpoenaed or harassed for their vigorous defense of their clients. Death Penalty Defense CACJ s Death Penalty Committee provides information about the fight to abolish the death penalty in California.
