Course Description: This course presents an introduction to Social Psychology by examining theories and research dealing with individual behavior influenced by the social environment. Major topics to be covered in this course include, but are not limited to: social influence processes, attitude formation and change, conformity, persuasion, group behavior, aggression, interpersonal attraction, conflict and peace. Expectations of Students: 1) You are expected to behave respectfully at all times during class. It is considered disrespectful to carry on side conversations with neighbors, sleep, read the campus newspaper, or complete assignments for other courses during lecture. 2) Listening to an MP3 player (e.g., ipod, etc.), surfing the Internet, and talking or texting on your cell phone is unacceptable classroom behavior. Cell phones and other portable devices are to be turned off or placed on silent mode for the duration of the class. When necessary, disruptive students may be asked to leave the class. 3) Do not audiotape, videotape, photograph or record lectures. Course Requirements: Exams: Exam material will include a combination of textbook and lecture material; students are responsible for all information presented during lectures as well as all material presented in the assigned readings from the textbook. There will be four non-cumulative multiple choice exams over the course of the semester including the Final Exam. You must bring a number 2 pencil for all exams. Each of these exams is weighted equally (100 points). There will be one makeup for each exam. In order to be eligible to take the make-up exam, you will need to provide a completed explanation of the absence along with appropriate documentation (e.g., excuse signed by the medical professional along with their phone number, copy of the funeral notice, or the police report). You must be on time for the exam. If you are late to class on the day of the exam, you will not be permitted to take the exam if any classmate has already completed and submitted the exam. Do not talk once the exam is handed out. Furthermore, cell phone use is not permitted during the exam; please turn your cell phone off on exam days. Once you finish your exam, please check your answers, turn in your exam, and exit the room quietly. Quizzes: There will be six quizzes worth twenty points each administered throughout the semester. Each quiz will be based on material covered during previous lectures and/or the assigned readings for that day s lecture. You will be allowed to drop your lowest quiz score. Each quiz will be administered at the beginning of the class period; as a result, if you are late for class, you will be unable to take the quiz. Quizzes that were missed due to a University excused absence or a medical emergency that is documented may be made up within one week of the quiz during office hours. Papers: During the course of the semester, you will be expected to write two social psychology applied papers; each paper will be worth 50 points. Papers will need to be submitted to the Dropbox on D2L before the due date. Papers should be 3-4 pages long, double spaced, and written according to APA style. More details about the papers will be discussed in class and more information will be posted on D2L. Late papers will be assessed a penalty of 5% for the first day late, 10% for the second day late, with a maximum penalty of 20% for up to a week late. After one week late, papers will no longer be accepted. Extra Credit: A total of twenty extra credit points can be earned by: reviewing and summarizing a journal article related to a topic discussed in class (10 Points) and by writing a film analysis about a film that demonstrates a social psychology phenomenon (10 Points). Guidelines for the extra credit assignments will be posted on D2L. Grade Calculations: The final letter grade for each student will be determined by combining the total points from the four exams, five of the six quizzes, and the two social psychology application papers. Policies: Petitions in Writing Only: Occasionally, discrepancies arise between a student s and an instructor s perceptions regarding grades. You are always welcome to discuss your grades with me during office hours. However, if you want me to consider changing your grade, then you must turn in a petition in writing within one week of receiving your grade on an exam or an assignment. You must outline specifically why and how your work warrants more credit. Submitting a written petition does not guarantee a grade change. Attendance Policy: Regular class attendance is expected in this course. Students are responsible for meeting the course requirements on assigned dates as outlined in the course syllabus. Furthermore, you are responsible for all material discussed in lecture whether you attend or not. In addition, you are responsible for all material covered in the assigned readings. Tardiness: If you arrive late to class (or need to leave early), please be discrete when entering or leaving as to not disturb anyone else. If you arrive late for an exam, you will not be permitted to take the exam if any student has already completed and submitted the exam. Class Notes: I do not provide complete copies of my notes. Lecture notes (i.e., PowerPoint s) will be posted, but they may not cover the material covered in class in its entirety. Additional lecture material will be covered in class. If you miss class, please obtain notes from a fellow classmate. Students with Disabilities: The University makes accommodations for students with disabilities. If you need any accommodations, please let me know within the first week of the semester. Academic Integrity: Plagiarism is any method in which you represent someone else s written work (in part or in full) as your work. This includes copying text word-for-word without quotation marks and citing references or paraphrasing without citing the original author. Plagiarism or any form of cheating (e.g., talking to others during an exam, copying answers, using the textbook or other notes during an exam, and talking or texting on a cell phone during an exam, etc.) will not be tolerated in this course. Those caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive a failing grade for this course, and you will be reported to the department chair and appropriate Deans. The Code of Student Conduct for Southern Illinois University specifies the policy for cheating, plagiarism or other forms of dishonesty and misconduct. All students are not expected to share the same values; I ask that differences of opinion be tolerated. Incomplete Policy: A grade of Incomplete will only be granted in the case of a serious medical illness. Written documentation of the illness will be required. An incomplete will not be given if you have already completed the course or if you do not have a passing grade. If you believe that you will need to take an incomplete for the course, please talk to me as soon as the possibility arises. Do not wait until the end of the semester.
