WORKPLACE BENEFITS: PROTECTION GROUP INCOME PROTECTION 4 WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CAUSES OF ABSENCE? We know from our own claims experience that mental health, musculoskeletal conditions and cancer are the main causes of absence. We ve created a specialist approach to the management of these conditions through our centre of excellence. WHAT IS THE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE? Our centre of excellence provides treatment for the management of claims arising from mental health and musculoskeletal disorders. Each claim is treated and managed individually; the basic principles and processes are consistent in order to help make sure, where appropriate, your employees are returned to work with full support. Mental health Mental health problems range from the worries we all experience as part of everyday life to serious long-term conditions. Anxiety and depression are the most common problems. Severe mental illness can include bipolar or schizophrenia. Mental ill health is one of the main causes of mid and long-term absence for UK employers. Our approach is vital in helping to ensure effective interventions are available from the earliest opportunity. We can fast-track employees into treatment with minimum delay. We have an exclusive partnership with a third-party provider, who offers a wide range of psychological therapies. The treatment provided doesn t just focus on symptom reduction, it will also consider any workplace factors to identity a successful outcome to the workplace. Each employee is allocated both a therapist and a care coordinator, whose role is to work alongside the therapist, member and employer during their treatment, return to work and relapse prevention plans. Musculoskeletal disorders We recognise the importance of understanding the capabilities of an individual. When appropriate, we fund physiotherapy with a clear focus on a return to work. We will keep you and your employee informed with progress and plans for further sessions. 78.9% of the employees, who suffered from a musculoskeletal condition that we received a notification for, were able to return to work before the end of the deferred period. (2013) Cancer Medical evidence shows the number of patients surviving following a diagnosis of cancer has risen due to advances in early detection and treatment. Advice networks often provide sufficient support for employees with cancer during the early stages of diagnosis and treatment. To complement this, our rehabilitation team will engage with you and your employee at an appropriate time to help them return back to work. 31.7% of the employees, who suffered from cancer that we received a notification for, were able to return to work before the end of the deferred period. (2013) 79.4% of the employees, who suffered a mental health condition that we received a notification for, were able to return to work before the end of the deferred period. (2013)
