Lightning Protection Services Prevent loss from lightning damage with UL s Inspection Certificate

Your first strike against lightning damage. Increase safety, minimize risk, protect from liability. Having a UL lightning protection system Master Label Inspection Certificate demonstrates your commitment to safety.

Each year thousands of properties are damaged or destroyed by lightning. In the United States, lightning accounts for more than $1 billion in annual structural damage. As a leading authority in lightning protection, UL has been inspecting and certifying lightning protection equipment since 1908.

Only UL Listed Lightning Protection Installers can deliver a lightning protection system carrying a UL Master Label Inspection Certificate, and provide: Minimized risk of significant property damage caused by lightning strikes Protection from liability, downtime and loss of business in the event of lightning damage Peace of mind that the system bearing a UL Inspection Certificate has been rigorously inspected to provide maximum protection for the structure or building A demonstrable commitment to safety to insurers, local inspectors and commercial tenants Tools to make informed choices when selecting equipment and an installer Some manufacturers and installers simply self-declare that their lightning protection systems comply with national standards, making it difficult to determine if systems truly comply, are installed properly, or perform as claimed. Purchasing a lightning protection system carrying a UL Master Label Inspection Certificate ensures safety, protection, and peace of mind. Designing and planning a lightning protection system Studies by the American Geophysical Union confirm that conventional lightning protection systems are highly effective in reducing lightning-caused fires and damage to buildings and structures. Specifying compliance with UL 96A or NFPA 780 (National Fire Protection Association) standards is key to safe and effective lightning system performance. Lightning protection systems that have received the UL Inspection Certificate comply with national standards and include all of the following specified components: Network of rooftop air terminals that provide a complete zone of protection Network of low impedance grounding terminations Network of conductors interconnecting the air terminals and grounds Interconnections with metallic bodies that provide equipotential bonding Lightning protection surge protection devices on all incoming services UL Listed Lightning Protection Installers begin delivering complete systems by specifying, purchasing, and installing lightning protection products certified by UL. Further, to receive a UL inspection certificate each design and system installation must be verified compliant by UL inspectors. Selecting a Listed Installer Listed Lightning Protection Installers include those companies whose services are described in a list published by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. UL maintains periodic inspection of Listed services, which states that the service either meets appropriate designated standards or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose. To locate an installer near you, go to www.ul.com/lightning. Once on the lightning protection home page click on the link Find a Listed Installer located at the bottom of the page.

Before you purchase your next lightning protection system, select a professional installer that answers Yes to these questions: Are the installed products marked to indicate they comply with UL requirements? Will the system be independently verified by a third-party certifier as meeting the installation requirements of UL and/or NFPA? Do you follow nationally recognized installation standards for lightning protection systems? Can you provide a Master Label Certificate from a third-party inspection agency? Will the installation pass inspection by local building inspectors? Can the system help reduce insurance premiums for lightning damage especially in regions where there is a documented high occurrence of lightning activity? Will Listed components and materials best suited for the features and design of the structure be specified? How the UL Lightning Protection Inspection Certificate Program works: UL s Lightning Protection Inspection Service provides the lightning protection industry with independent third party inspection services and verifies that inspected systems comply with national standards. We have made the process of obtaining a Lightning Protection Inspection Certificate quick and easy. With 200 lightning protection inspectors across the US we schedule inspections according to your schedule, and convey inspection results instantly through our Internet based Certificate Directory. 1. After the system has been installed, the UL Listed installer submits an inspection request to UL. 2. Your lightning protection system is assigned to a UL representative who inspects the installation and communicates the results electronically to UL and the installer. 3. If necessary, a letter detailing needed corrective action is issued to the installer who may then request another inspection to verify that the system has been rendered compliant. 4. The UL Listed installer forwards the certificate to the structure/building owner, and posts the certificate on UL s web site (www.ul.com/lightning), providing proof that the lightning protection system complies with UL, NFPA or US government standards. 5. Certificates must be renewed every five years. 6. Routine maintenance of your Lightning Protection System will provide you the best means of protection. Changes or damage to the structural, mechanical, and electrical design of the structure can impair the protection afforded by your system. If at any time you feel your system is not up to code, please contact a UL Listed Lightning Protection Installer and request a UL inspection.
