St Vincent s Catholic Primary School e-safety Policy Policy e-safety Policy Date January 2015 Date of review January 2016 Signed Chair of Governors Signed Headteacher

Effective Practice in e-safety E-safety depends on effective practice in each of the following areas: Education for responsible ICT use by staff, pupils and families; A comprehensive, agreed and implemented e-safety policy; Secure, filtered broadband from the London Grid for Learning (LGfL); A school network that complies with the National Education Network standards and specifications. E-Safety Policy 2 January 2015

1. e-safety Audit Primary The audit should be completed by the member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) responsible for e-safety policy. Staff who could contribute to the audit includes those responsible for Child Protection, Data Protection, Data Security, SENCO, e-safety, ICT Subject Leader and Headteacher. See Appendix 1. 2. Writing and reviewing the e-safety policy This e-safety Policy is part of the School Plan and relates to other policies including those for ICT, bullying and child protection and data protection. This policy has been written by the school, building on the LBBD E-Safety policy and government guidance. It has been agreed by senior management and approved by governors. 3. Teaching and learning 3.1 Why the Internet and digital communications are important The purpose of Internet use in school is to raise educational standards, to promote pupil achievement, to support the professional work of staff and to enhance the school s management functions. Internet use is part of the statutory curriculum and a necessary tool for learning. Internet access is an entitlement for students who show a responsible and mature approach to its use. The Internet is a part of everyday life for education, business and social interaction. The school has a duty to provide students with quality Internet access as part of their learning experience. Pupils use the Internet widely outside school and need to learn how to evaluate Internet information and to take care of their own safety and security. 3.2 Internet use will enhance learning The school Internet access will be designed expressly for pupil use and will include filtering appropriate to the age of pupils. Pupils will be taught about acceptable Internet use and practice which is not acceptable. Children will be provided with clear objectives for Internet use. Pupils will be educated in the effective use of the Internet in research, including the skills of knowledge location, retrieval and evaluation. 3.3 Pupils will be taught how to evaluate Internet content E-Safety Policy 3 January 2015

The school will seek to ensure that the use of Internet derived materials by staff and pupils complies with copyright law. Pupils will be taught the importance of cross-checking information before accepting its accuracy. Pupils will be taught how to report inappropriate Internet content. 4. Managing Information and Communication Systems 4.1 Information system security The security of the school information systems will be reviewed regularly. Files held on the school s network will be regularly checked. The school will check their virus protection is updating regularly and inform the RM Education of any issues. Security strategies will be discussed with RM Education. The ICT co-ordinator / network manager will review system capacity regularly. 4.2 E-mail Pupils may only use e-mail accounts on the school system which are approved by the school. Pupils must immediately tell an appropriate member of staff if they receive any offensive email. Staff should only use their school email account in communication with pupils and parents. In e-mail communication, pupils must not reveal their personal details or those of others, or arrange to meet anyone without specific permission. Pupils will be educated in how to deal with incoming email and associated attachments. The school will supervise and review any e-mail from pupils to external bodies in order to ensure it is suitably presented and controlled. Whole-class or group email addresses will be used in primary schools for communication outside of the school. 4.3 Published content (printed or online) Staff or pupil personal contact information should not be published. The contact details given online should be that of the school office. E-Safety Policy 4 January 2015

The Headteacher has overall accountability and will ensure that published content is accurate and appropriate. 4.4 Publishing pupils images and work Parents / guardians should sign the digital media release form to give their consent before photographs are used. Digital media should be used in accordance with the home school agreement. The digital media release form should be reviewed annually. Images that include pupils will be selected carefully and will not provide material that could be reused. Pupils full names will not be used anywhere on the website, particularly in association with photographs. 4.5 Social networking and personal publishing The school will control access to social networking sites, and where relevant educate pupils in their safe use. Newsgroups, forums and chat rooms will be blocked unless a specific use is identified. Pupils will be advised never to give out personal details of any kind which may identify them, their friends or their location. Ideally pupils would use only moderated social networking sites, e.g. SuperClubs Plus Pupils and parents will be advised that the use of social network spaces outside school brings a range of dangers for primary aged pupils and that many have age restrictions. 4.6 Managing filtering The school will work with the Local Authority to ensure systems to protect pupils are reviewed and improved. If staff or pupils come across unsuitable on-line materials, the site must be reported to the appropriate person(s) in line with school policy. Pupils will be taught on the action they must take if the encounter such materials. Senior staff will ensure that regular checks are made to ensure that the filtering methods selected are appropriate, effective and reasonable. 4.7 Managing videoconferencing & webcam use The equipment and network Videoconferencing will use the educational broadband network to ensure quality of service and security rather than the Internet. E-Safety Policy 5 January 2015

All videoconferencing equipment in the classroom must be switched off when not in use and not set to auto answer. Users Pupils should ask permission from the supervising teacher before making or answering a videoconference call. Videoconferencing should be supervised appropriately for the pupils age. Only key administrators should be given access to the videoconferencing system, web or other remote control page available on larger systems. Content When recording a videoconference lesson, written permission should be given by all sites and participants. The reason for the recording must be given and the recording of videoconference should be clear to all parties at the start of the conference. If third-party materials are to be included, check that recording is acceptable to avoid infringing the third party intellectual property rights. Establish dialogue with other conference participants before taking part in a videoconference. If it is a non-school site it is important to check that they are delivering material that is appropriate for your class. 4.8 Managing emerging technologies Emerging technologies will be examined for educational benefit and any risks considered before use in school is allowed. Technologies such as mobile phones with wireless Internet access can bypass school filtering systems and present a new route to undesirable material and communications. Pupils will not be allowed access to their mobile phones during the school day. Mobile phones should be handed in to a member of staff on arrival at school where they will be kept locked away in the office. Pupils can collect their phones at the end of the school day. The sending of abusive or inappropriate data is forbidden. Staff should have access to a school phone where contact with pupils is required. 4.9 Protecting personal data Personal data will be recorded, processed, transferred and made available according to the Data Protection Act 1998 and any other relevant legislation. E-Safety Policy 6 January 2015

5. Policy Decisions 5.1 Authorising Internet access All staff must read and sign the Staff Acceptable Use policy before using any school ICT resource. See Appendix 2. Parents / carers will sign a consent form giving their permission for their child to use the Internet in school. Pupils will sign an e-safety agreement form indicating they are aware of the rules of conduct when using the Internet and other ICT resources. See Appendix 3. The school will maintain a current record of all staff and pupils who are granted access to school ICT systems. At Key Stage 1, access to the Internet will be by adult demonstration with directly supervised access to specific, approved on-line materials. Any person not directly employed by the school will be asked to sign an Acceptable Use policy before being allowed to access the Internet from the school site. 5.2 Assessing risks The school will take all reasonable precautions to prevent access to inappropriate material. However, due to the international scale and linked nature of Internet content, it is not possible to guarantee that unsuitable material will never appear on a computer connected to the school network. Neither the school nor LBBD can accept liability for any material accessed, or any consequences of Internet access. The school should audit ICT use to establish if the e-safety policy is adequate and that the implementation of the e-safety policy is appropriate and effective. 5.3 Handling e-safety complaints Complaints of Internet misuse will be dealt with by a senior member of staff. Any complaint about staff misuse must be referred to the headteacher. Complaints of a child protection nature must be dealt with in accordance with school child protection procedures. Parents and pupils will need to work in partnership with staff to resolve issues. Pupils and parents will be informed of consequences for pupils misusing the Internet. 5.4 Cyber Bullying Cyber bullying is the use of modern communication technologies to embarrass, humiliate, threaten, or intimidate an individual in the attempt to gain power and control over them. (Glenn R. Stutzky) E-Safety Policy 7 January 2015

St. Vincent s will not tolerate any form of cyber bullying in any of its forms and are committed to ensuring that all stakeholders including governors, parents, staff, students and visitors know what is not acceptable but also where to get help. The school will also endeavour to promote, actively seek out and provide advice, strategies and guidance for staff, students and parents in understanding what constitutes cyber bullying, where to seek help and what behaviour is expected. Students committing an act of cyber bullying will be dealt with in accordance with the E- Safety, Anti Bullying and Behaviour Policies and Procedures and each individual will be dealt with according to the circumstances. 6. Communications Policy 6.1 Introducing the e-safety policy to pupils E-Safety rules will be posted in the ICT suite and will be discussed with pupils regularly. Pupils will be informed that network and Internet use will be monitored and appropriately followed up. A programme of training in e-safety will be developed. E-Safety training will be embedded within the ICT scheme of work and the Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum. 6.2 Staff and the e-safety policy All staff will be given the school e-safety policy. The policy and its importance must be explained. Staff must be informed that network and Internet traffic can be monitored and traced to the individual user. Staff that manage filtering systems or monitor ICT use will be supervised by senior management and work to clear procedures for reporting issues. Staff will always use a child friendly safe search engine when accessing the web with pupils. 6.3 Enlisting parents and carers support Parents and carers attention will be drawn to the school e-safety policy. The school will ask all new parents to sign the parent /pupil agreement when they register their child with the school. The school will signpost parents / carers to suitable e-safety resources and advice via newsletters, school blog page and website. E-Safety Policy 8 January 2015
