Swanson, Leonard Territo, And Robert W. Taylor, Police Administration: Structures, Processes, And Behavior, Eighth Edition, Prentice Hall Publishing. Prerequisite: CJUS 1113 Introduction to Criminal Justice must be completed prior to this course if not you will have to drop this course and you also must be a Senior to be enrolled in this course. Course Description: The Criminal Justice Administration and Management class at Northwestern Oklahoma State University is a study and description of the principles of organization, leadership, and management as it applies to law enforcement agencies and law enforcement personnel at all levels. The role of law enforcement agency executives and major issues affecting law enforcement personnel are discussed. Course Goals and Objectives: The objective of the Criminal Justice Administration and Managements class at Northwestern Oklahoma State University is to teach the students about the major federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies to comprise the modern criminal justice system. The objective of the course will also be to teach the students about the problems and issues confronting the legislatures, police agencies, courts, corrections, and the community as they respond to crime in a democratic society. ISTE Standards: The student must understand the role of human values in cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity at the domestic level; understand the principles of ethical behavior; and identify and understand the rights and responsibilities of United States citizenship. The student will use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. The students will: interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media; will communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats; develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures; and contribute to project teams to produce original

works or solve problems. The students will apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. The student will plan strategies to guide inquiry; locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media; evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks; and process data and report results. Finally, the student will demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. The student will understand and use technology systems; select and use applications effectively and productively; troubleshoot systems and applications; and transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies. Online Testing Policy At least ONE test, in every online class offered by NWOSU, will require students to come to one of the campuses (Alva, Enid, WW, Ponca) or the use of Remote Proctor NOW software. For those students coming to campus a picture ID will be required for verification. Costs associated with proctoring, including Remote Proctor Now ($15/test) are the responsibility of the student. Northwestern students who choose to come to a NWOSU campus will not be charged a fee. The policy does NOT require students to come to a campus. It is an option to come to campus or to use Remote Proctor Now. In this regard the student has the option of paying $15 fee or coming to campus where there will be no charge. Please read Test Proctoring Policies on Blackboard for more information. Course Requirements: Requirements Points Total Points 4 Unit Tests 50 points each 200 points 5 Chapter Quizzes 10 points each 50 points Theory and Current 25 points 25 points Event paper Organizational Theory 25 points 25 points and Problem Solving paper Research Paper (8-10 pages) 100 points 100 points There is a total of 400 points available for the class. There will be no extra credit offered. The exams and quizzes will be in multiple choice and true/false format. The 4 th Unit Test will be comprehensive. If the test needs to be reset by me due to an internet disruption, you need to contact me before the test is

unavailable, meaning before the test closes on Friday evening. If I do not receive an email or a phone call from you, then you may not retake the test. Discussion and participation points will be based upon input on the discussion board and not just logging into the class. Additional assignments may be assigned during the semester. The paper must utilize A.P.A. format, include correct grammar, punctuation and spelling, and be organized and presented in a synthesized manner. You will need to use a minimum of five quality resources. A Criminological Theory must be incorporated into the topic of your paper in a clear and logical manner. The paper topic needs to be relevant to this class. Look at the chapter headings for paper topic ideas. The rough draft should be at least an outline and three sources. Please refer to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/general/gl_annotatedbib.html if you need help regarding the correct format for this paper. Organizational Theory and Problem Solving Assignment: There are many current problems occurring in the criminal justice systems such as overcrowding and corruption. Choose a problem that is currently happening in the CJS and find a theory from Chapter 5 in the textbook that would explain the problem or help solve the problem. There must be at least one source for the theory and the source of the current event. Attach this paper under the Assignment tab on Blackboard. Paper should be 2-3 pages typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font, and APA style. 25 points Theory and Current Event Assignment: Choose a theory from Chapter 5 in the textbook and write how it came about and by whom. Relate this theory to a current event and include the sources from which you found the current event. There must be at least one source for the theory and the source of the current event. Attach this under the Assignment tab on Blackboard. Paper should be 2-3 pages typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font, and APA style. 25 points Point Systems/Grades: 400-360 = A 359-320 = B 319-280 = C 279-240 = D 239 and under = F Attendance Policy: The responsibility for attending the class, or viewing the online material associated with the Criminal Justice Administration and Managements class at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, rests upon the student. Attendance

and involvement in the Criminal Justice Administration and Managements online class is expected. Absence does not excuse the student from the obligation to do all the work required by the instructor for the course. Attendance in class is expected. Only authorized absences will entitle students to perform make-up work, and shall be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor. If there are problems during a quiz or a test contact the instructor via email or phone. If contact is made after the designated time of the quiz or test you will not be allowed to make up the quiz or test. Services for Students with Disabilities Any student needing academic accommodations for a physical, mental or learning disability should contact the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities, or faculty member personally, within the first two weeks of the semester so that appropriate accommodations may be arranged. Plagiarism Policy: All written work must be a product of the students own individual effort. Also, you should not copy from another student s work or submit another student s essay or paper as your own. Plagiarism is a term that refers to the use of all or part of someone else s work, words, or ideas (or a paraphrase of that work) as your own without giving proper credit to the original source by documenting the author s name, title of the work, and the page where the original information appears. Academic Dishonesty: All papers and assignments shall be the student s own work. At no time is it acceptable for a student to turn in work that had been written for another class or by another student. Violation of these standards is considered academic dishonesty, and the penalty is a 0 on the paper or work submitted by the student. Class Withdrawal: If a student needs to withdraw for any reason from this course, it is the student s responsibility to fill out a drop slip at the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus in Alva, Oklahoma; Enid, Oklahoma; or Woodward, Oklahoma. It is the policy of Northwestern Oklahoma State University that all withdrawals must be initiated by the student. The Instructor for this Criminal Justice Administration and Managements class cannot drop the class for the student. If this is the only class that you are taking and you want to withdraw,

you must contact the Office Of The Registrar on one of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campuses in order to obtain the forms for a complete withdrawal from the course within the appropriate time frame as established by Northwestern Oklahoma State University for that particular semester. Schedule: The schedule is subject to change throughout the semester. Changes will be at the discretion of the instructor and will be announced in advance.
