The primary mission of the College of Medicine & Health Sciences (CMHS) at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is to achieve this by educating physicians and preparing them for advanced training in every field of medicine. In addition, CMHS offers opportunities for scientists to work in a research-intensive environment, and to acquire Master s and Doctoral level qualifications in the medical field. CMHS activities include undergraduate and postgraduate education, continuing medical education, continuing professional development, research and the delivery and enhancement of health promotion and medical services. The college is located in close proximity to the main university campus at the Tawam Medical Campus, adjacent to Tawam Hospital. It offers state-of-the-art facilities and excellent support services. CMHS undergraduate and postgraduate degrees are recognized and accepted by institutions in many countries, including the US Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, American, Canadian and European universities and the Royal Colleges of Medicine. We have developed strong partnerships with several overseas universities, including the University of Oxford, Harvard University, Loma Linda University and the University of Malaya, amongst many others. Prof. Dennis Templeton Dean, College of Medicine and Health Sciences DEAN S MESSAGE The standard of teaching and learning is one of the highest in the region. 6 OVERVIEW OF THE COLLEGE The College of Medicine & Health Sciences at UAEU was established in 1984. CMHS is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UAE Ministry of Health, and accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC). CMHS has an excellent team on board that includes outstanding national and international faculty members, researchers supported by external grants and additionally teaching assistants on external scholarships. You will find our faculty members have graduated from some of the best universities in the world and continue to be engaged in a strong research culture. The college has six basic science departments (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology ), and seven clinical departments (internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, family medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, psychiatry and an Institute of Public Health). A separate Department of Medical Education provides advice, training, and support for the medical undergraduate curriculum, and also for an increasing number of postgraduate clinical training initiatives. In addition to this, a well-resourced on-site National Medical Library facilitates teaching and research for students, staff and adjunct clinical and scientific staff from hospitals and affiliated institutions. Recent initiatives by the college include the establishment of a well-equipped Clinical Simulation Centre, and a state-of-the-art Examination and Assessment Center. We have also launched a center of excellence for national and global health (Zayed Center for Health Sciences), with further plans in place for a second center for genetics and diseases (Center for Molecular Medicine). The college continues to support the UAE in its committment to being a knowledge-based economy in which education and research play a critical role. Skills, knowledge, practice, professionalism, education, punctuality, responsibility, adaptation, motivation, team work, experience, persistence, determination, curiosity, sacrifice, humbleness, gratefulness, generosity, modesty, honesty, ethics, and time management are few but not all of the lessons of life that I have been taught at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at UAEU.
