12 What is the Cloud, and why should it matter?
23 Everyone seems to be asking about it. No one seems to know exactly what it is, what they need, and where to find it.
4 A Philosophy of Design and Execution Cloud is server, network, and storage converged into one infrastructure, fully managed, and delivered as a service.
45 It is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a multitenant environment of logically segmented pools of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned.
46 At its core, cloud is not a technology; rather it is a philosophy of design and execution.
Sound Familiar? 97
LPAR anyone? 98 Short for logical partitioning, a system of taking a computer's total resources -processors, memory and storage -- and splitting them into smaller units that each can be run with its own instance of the operating system andapplications. Logical partitioning, which requires specialized hardware circuits, is typically used to separate different functions of a system, such asweb serving, database functions, client/server actions or systems that serve multiple time zones and/or languages. Logical partitioning can also be used to keep testing environments separated from the production environments. Since the partitions in effect act as separate physical machines, they can communicate with each other. IBM was the first to use logical partitioning in 1976. Legacy x86 Model Expand your Infrastructure! Buy new servers, predict your highest level of resource demand, provision excess capacity now just in case!! 910
Cloud Model 911 Look to the cloud! Pay for the network, internet bandwidth and server resources that you need, but only when you need them
So why so much Hype around the Cloud? 412
913 The market for Cloud Services is large: revenues are predicted to be nearly $44 Billion in 2013.* *Cisco IBSG, December 2009 & March 2011
914 41.7% of companies data centers will run out of power, cooling or space by the end of 2012.* (Build vs. Buy) *Cisco IBSG, December 2009 & March 2011
915 ~11.8 million (x86)servers in data centers with an average utilization rate around 15%.* *Cisco IBSG, December 2009 & March 2011
916 Almost 50% of companies expect to be spending 30% or more of their total IT budget on cloud services; today 17% spend 30% or more of their IT budgets on cloud. *Cisco IBSG, What SMBs Want from Cloud Services and the potential for Service Providers. Dec. 2009 & Mar. 2011
