Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University Information for International Students The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University was established in 1947 and is now a leading medical school in Thailand. It consists of 21 medical departments and the school for graduate training in various clinical fields. Over recent years, the Faculty of Medicine has become well known as a good place for short elective periods among overseas students. Regulations A deposit of course and accommodation fee (please see confirmation sheet for details ) must be paid in cash upon the first day of the course at the, Faculty of Medicine. Students are expected to dress properly (black pants and white shirt for men, long dress for women with leather shoes) and to wear a hospital gown when working in the wards. Students should bring their own white gown and stethoscope. Application International Students are to fill out the Application Form (confirmation sheet), attach the photo, and send it to the International Affairs Office (see below). Please note that the application process can take up to 1 month. Applications should be accompanied by: One recent photo A recommendation letter from the International Student s University/Dean s Office, verifying the student s academic status. Accommodation If needed, we are happy to help International Students with their accommodation in Bangkok. Some students find their own place, while others choose to stay at Faculty of Medicine International Dormitory because it is close to the Faculty of Medicine and affordable 10000 Baht/month per person (single room), 6,000 Baht/Month per person (double room), or 500 Baht/day per person (any room type)*. The rooms are fully furnished with aircondition, television, WI-FI, washroom, and 24 -hour security system. Students must bring their own towels. Please note that the accommodation price is non-negotiable. Students are not allowed to smoke, drink, or bring guests to their room. Library There are over 48,694 books, 26,231 bound journals, 495 subscriptions in English and Thai, as well as non-book collections available at the Faculty of Medicine s library. The library serves as the main source of information in life sciences, medical sciences and related fields for specialists engaged in medical practice, teaching and research. International Students have full access to the library s facilities, including internet access. Activities The Faculty has two flood-lit tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, and an indoor stadium housing 3 badminton courts plus table tennis, judo and gymnastic corners. Overseas students are also welcome to use the University swimming pool. Western music bands as well as Thai music ensembles are formed by the medical students. Courses For Foreign Medical Students and Graduates The courses are designed specifically for foreign medical students and graduates, and are in block of four weeks each. However, up to six blocks may be chosen. Each block consists of an introductory discussion, small group activities, clinical experiences under supervision and self-education. Certain courses also contain field work. The principal objective is to familiarize foreign students with local medical problems and the provision of health care services at Chulalongkorn Hospital. Students will also have ample opportunity to get acquainted with Thai medical students and to enjoy social and cultural life in Thailand. Specific objectives: 1. Students will learn to diagnose and provide appropriate care for patients with common illnesses. 2. Students will become acquainted with the hospital health care services. 3. Students will have an opportunity to learn about Thai society and culture and establish friendship ties with Thai medical students. COURSES OFFERED: I. DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Anesthesiology I Theoretical aspects in anesthesiology, pre-operative patient preparation, premedication, variations of general and local anesthetic drugs and problems in cardiopulmonary arrest. Course II - Anesthesiology II Practical works on general and regional anesthesia in uncomplicated cases and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. II.DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Infectious Disease 1. Attend infectious ward rounds with residents and consultants. 2. Perform simple and rapid diagnostic tests for common infectious diseases. 3. Attend infectious disease conferences. Course II - Hematology 1. Attend ward rounds and outpatient clinics with hematology consultants and residents. 2. Course III - Endocrinology 1. Attend outpatient diabetic and thyroid clinics. 2. Attend endocrinology ward rounds with endocrinology consultants and residents. Course IV - Medical Oncology 1. Attend medical oncology clinics for common malignant tumors including unique cancers seen in South-East Asia. 2. Attend oncology ward rounds with residents and attending physicians. 3. Attend tumor clinics for multimodality approach in cancer therapy. 4. Observe special investigation procedures in cancer biology laboratory. Course V - Dermatology 1. Attend skin wards with consultants. 2. Attend skin out-patient clinics for common skin diseases including tropical skin diseases. 3. Attend skin conference, clinical slides conference, case demonstration clinic, clinico pathologic conference. III.DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Tropical Microbiology 1. Observe and assist in the routine laboratory diagnosis procedures of tropical bacterial, viral and fungal infectious diseases. 2. Attend microbiology and infectious disease conferences. IV.DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Social Obstetrics and Gynecology 8

1. Attend out-patient clinics. 2. In patient assignment under supervision. 3. Assist surgical procedures. 4. Perform delivery and some minor surgical procedures under close supervision. Course II - Family Planning and Human Reproduction 1. Attend out-patient family planning and infertility clinics. 2. Assist surgical sterilization procedure. 3. Get involve in fertility regulation research project. 4. Observe the procedure of sex-hormone determination. V. DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - General Ophthalmology 1. Attend ward round, case conference, journal club, seminars and activities of the department. 2. Attend out-patients, practice simple minor surgery and opthalmic diagnostic tests. 3.Observe surgical operations, advance diagnostic procedure, ultrasound, automatic visual field, Topographic Modeling System, Imagenet, laser etc. 9

VI. DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Clinical Orthopedic Surgery 1. Attend orthopedic out-patient clinic and subspecialty clinic, pediatric clinic, scoliotic clinic, hip clinic and spine clinic. 2. Attend in-patient orthopedic surgical ward rounds. 3. Assist surgical operations in the operating theater. 4. Perform some minor surgical procedures under staff supervision. 5. Case discussion and conference. 6. Attend inter-hospital orthopedic conference monthly. VII.DEPARTMENT OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Otolaryngology 1. Attend out-patient department, ward rounds, grand round and other activities. 2. Observe and assist E.N.T. operations in the operating room. 3. Attend special clinics, for example, audiological clinic and allergy clinic, etc. VIII. DEPARTMENT OF PARASITOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Intensive Course in Medical Parasitology Case demonstration, lecture and laboratory work in medical protozoalogy, medical heminthology, medical entomology and immunology of parasitic infections. IX. DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Short Training in Autopsy Pathology Perform autopsies under supervision and take chance of assembling the autopsy protocol. 10

Course II - Short Training in Neuropathology 1.Lecture or group discussion on neuropathology, eg. congenital malformation, etc. 2.Observe brain cutting. 3.Self-study on microscopic slides and gross specimens. Course IIII - Short Training in Cardiovascular Pathology Lecture or group discussion in normal morphology of heart and blood vessels, pathology of heart diseases, for example congenital heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, infective endocarditis, etc. X.DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Geographical Pediatrics Studies in general pediatric ward and special clinics, including tropical pediatrics, geographical gastroenterology, common infectious diseases (rheumatic fever, postinfectious glomerulonephritis, dengue hemorrhagic fever). XI. DEPARTMENT OF PREVENTIVE AND SOCIAL MEDICINE (Period-4 weeks) Period of Availability : May 4 January 30 each year Course I - Community Medicine Practice 1. Practice of community problem-solving approach in rural area. 2. Study of basic health service subsystems in both 11

urban and rural settings. 3. Discussion on prevention and control of diseases. 4. Primary medical care practice including outpatient care, in-patient care, and emergency care. Course II - Community Hospital Management 1. Observe the administration of community hospital and the director s managerial roles, particularly leadership style, decision making, group behavior and communication. 2. Study the management of community hospital work and field projects, the planning organization leadership and control etc. 3. Study of primary health care project management with emphasis on community involvement. XII.DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY(Period-4 weeks) Course I - Diagnostic Imaging 1. Study diagnostic imaging with clinical correlation. 2. Interpret medical imaging such as plain radiography, mammography, special procedures, ultrasonography, angiography, computed tomography and MRI under supervision. 3. Assist in the performance of special procedures in diagnostic imaging. 4. Attend conferences, seminars and lectures. 5. Study teaching files. Course II - Tropical Neuroradiology 1. Study diagnostic imaging of tropical neuroradiology with clinical correlation. 2. Interprets imaging of tropical neuroradiology, such as plain radiography and MRI, under supervision. 3. Assist in the performance of special procedures in neuroradiology. 4. Attend neuroradiological conferences. 5. Study teaching files in tropical neuroradiology. Course III -Clinical Radiation Therapy 1. Attend out-patient clinic 12 - Tumor clinic

- Follow up clinic - Gynecologic staging clinic - ENT Radiotherapy clinic 2. Attend in-patient ward round - During radiation therapy patients - Terminal patients - Chemotherapy patients 3. Attend Radiation Therapy - Brach Therapy for gynecologic patients - External irradiation 4. Planning system including fixation and compensation - Computer planning system - Simulator - Mould or orfit shell fixation Tissue compensation Course IV -Nuclear Medicine 1. Study diagnostic nuclear medicine investigations including non-imaging and radionuclide imaging (SPECT, PET, SPECT/CT, PET/CT). 2. Study radionuclide in thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer and others Follow up thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer patients after radioiodine treatment. Chulamed.international@gmail.com 4. Attend nuclear medicine conference and interdepartment conference. 5. Study teaching files of nuclear imaging. XIII. DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY (Period-4 weeks) Course I - Practical General Surgery (limited number of students) 13 1. Attend in-patient ward rounds.

2. Assist out-patient clinics. 3. Assist surgical operation in the operating theater. 4. Perform minor surgical procedures under supervision. XIV DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION MEDICINE (Period-4 weeks) Course I - General Rehabilitation Medicine 1. Attend general rehabilitation out-patient clinic and subspecialty clinics such as Diabetic foot clinic, Orthotic- prosthetic clinic, Hand rehabilitation clinic. 2. Attend the Thai Red Cross Rehabilitation Center ward rounds. 3. Attend Electro diagnostic (EMG) laboratory. 4. Observe the physical therapy unit, occupational therapy unit, hydrotherapy unit. Attend departmental conferences and seminar. 14
