ESE:O is a research and capacity building non-profit organization based in Santiago, Chile. ESE:O is dedicated to achieving social change and strengthening civil society in the global South through democratic literacy: a series of skills involving linguistic literacy (reading, writing, information seeking and sharing, interpretation and evaluation), human rights, and critical thinking. ESE:O s work involves research-action projects that focus on capacity building in under represented groups, especially women, children and youth, native peoples, activists and researchers in human rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights, and artists. Vision and Mission Vision and Mission ESE:O envisions written culture, the arts and memory as playing a key role in the development of democracy and the respect for human rights. Written culture, the arts and memory are fundamental components of accountability; visibility and legitimization of underrepresented groups are essential for building fully democratic societies. At ESE:O we strongly believe that capacity building in writing, critical thinking, social communications and technological skills can be a powerful instrument for achieving social justice. Change must originate from within communities: our projects aim at building voices from the South. ESE:O s mission is to build capacity in democratic literacy in the global South by promoting the production and dissemination of local knowledge according to international standards. Our working methodology combines collaborative writing, knowledge translation and information technologies. ESE:O s projects include workshops, online and face-to-face courses, the publication of articles in international peer reviewed journals, books, websites, sustainable research and action networks, conferences, teaching manuals and materials, newsletters and other kinds of community-based media.
