Faith Community/Parish Nurse Scholarships This scholarship program aims to increase the number of Faith Community/Parish Nurses in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church. No reimbursement for prior programs. The Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church offers scholarships to licensed registered nurses to complete a minimum of 34-hours continuing education Faith Community/Parish Nurse Basic Preparation Program. Support through scholarships is intended to increase the number of dedicated faith community/parish nurses. Faith community/parish nurses have the unique opportunity to minister to the physical, emotional, and spiritual facets of individuals and families. They act as effective health advocates, health educators and counselors, referral agents, volunteer coordinators, and support group leaders. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition and will be paid directly to the institution. Scholarship funds are not available as reimbursement for completed courses. Purpose The goal of the Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church Faith Community/Parish Nurse Scholarship program is to increase the number of Faith Community/Parish Nurses. Faith Community/Parish Nurses function as health advocates, health educators and counselors, referral agents, volunteer coordinators, support group developers and integrators of faith and health. Faith Community/Parish Nurses promote an understanding of the relationship between faith and health and are trusted community members, prepared to respond to people in a holistic way. Scholarship funds are not available as reimbursement for completed courses. Scholarship funds are to be used for costs related to tuition, and will be paid to the institution. Specifications 1. The applicant must hold a current license as a Registered Nurse in the state or states in which the applicant will render services. 2. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition for the Faith Community/Parish Nurse basic education course (minimum of 34 hours). Please see Finding Faith Community/Parish Nurse Programs [Link to.

3. Applicants must be affiliated with a United Methodist Church in the Baltimore Washington Conference. 4. Members, spouses and/or children of the Scholarship Review Committee may not apply. 5. Awardees will be required to send the committee a copy of the course certification of completion (i.e., evidence of credit earned). They will be sent a follow-up survey in six months. Faith Community and Parish Nurse Scholarship Application Requirements 1. A cover letter that includes: a. Name of the specific Faith Community/Parish Nurse Program (school) you plan to attend. b. Your name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address (if available), and church affiliation. c. Nursing education. d. Summary of work experience: roles/responsibilities. Describe how these work experiences have prepared you for the role of Faith Community/Parish Nurse. e. Community service. Describe how the community service roles /responsibilities have prepared you for the role of Faith Community/Parish Nurse. 2. Two sealed letters of recommendation (see Letter of Recommendation Criteria) from: a. A clergy member b. A Faith Community/Parish Nurse or a clinical professional colleague (nurse manager, instructor or RN peer) 3. Documentation of your state nursing license 4. Copy of the program documentation from the school you plan to attend 5. A statement (500 words maximum) explaining how you will use this education to benefit the caring/health ministry in your church (include your name, address and phone number on the statement). The application should be submitted in one packet. Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the institution. If for any reason, a scholarship awardee cannot attend the Faith Community/Parish Nurse program, they must notify the program and Carol Whitney immediately. Faith Community and Parish Nurse Scholarship Letter of Recommendation Criteria Thank you for your willingness to provide this Faith Community/Parish Nurse Scholarship applicant with a letter of recommendation. Please address the following points in your letter: 1. What is your relationship to this applicant? (How many years have you known this individual and in what capacity?) 2. Why you would recommend this applicant for the Faith Community/Parish Nurse Scholarship. Please consider these points relative to this applicant: a. Spiritual maturity b. Professionalism c. Interpersonal relationship style (communication skills, attitudes, etc.) d. Organizational development and management skills Add any additional comments that might help us better understand this applicant s capacity to effectively build on this scholarship opportunity. Please return your letter of recommendation to the applicant in a sealed envelope to submit with their application packet.
