APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION SCHOOL OF NURSING BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING PROGRAM Admission to the Nursing program requires a separate application to be mailed to the Shorter University School of Nursing, 315 Shorter Avenue, Rome GA 30165. The first two years of general education prerequisites are taken at Shorter University, or any accredited college or university. Students may apply and be admitted while perquisites are in progress toward completion. However, all courses must be completed prior to entry into the nursing program. The School of Nursing accepts applicants with the highest likelihood of success in the program. The admission process is competitive and meeting the criteria for admission is not a guarantee of acceptance. Each applicant is considered on an individual basis. The Admission Committee will not review an applicant s file until all the required documentation is included and complete. No decisions will be made on incomplete files. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that file is complete for review. Final acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of all prerequisite courses, final transcript review, and successful completion of background check, drug screen and physical examination. International students must be status approved by the Shorter University verification process. Applicants may contact the School of Nursing office at 706-233-7464 with any questions or concerns during the application review process. The nursing program is designed to be completed in five semesters. An additional requirement includes successful completion of a global study abroad requirement. Graduates of the BSN program will be eligible to take the NCLEX examination for licensure in any state. Accepted students will be assessed fees each semester for supplies, computer learning programs, standardized exams, association fees, and random drug screenings. All undergraduate applicants must submit: A complete School of Nursing application undergraduate form. A $25.00 application fee in the form of check or money order made payable to Shorter University. This fee is non-refundable and does not apply to registration fees. The application fee is waived for students currently enrolled in Shorter University. Admission Criteria: Minimum overall GPA 3.0/4.0 scale Standardized Test Required: Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS V), taken within the last 6 months, must be completed and results submitted to the School of Nursing by March 16, 2015. Completed application and all required documents. This includes two official transcripts from each college or university attended, irrespective of degree status. The transcripts must be received in a sealed envelope with registrar s official seal. Only official transcripts will be used for evaluation of credit. A grade of C or better must be obtained to receive credit. Science courses over 6 years may require validation before credit can be granted. Science and Math courses receive additional weighting in acceptance decisions. Please mail to Shorter University School of Nursing, 315 Shorter Avenue, Rome, GA 30165. International Students: Transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluation service. Statement of Purpose; see below. Completion of all required prerequisites. See Section A Once students have received notice of conditional acceptance via U.S. Mail, students are expected to successfully complete a background check, drug screen, physical examination, and submit a $200 nonrefundable fee to hold their space in the program. This fee will be used to purchase nursing equipment and supplies. International students must be approved with student status verification. Upon satisfactory completion, students will be confirmed for acceptance and will receive an orientation packet. Annual Background Checks/Physicals: The School of Nursing at Shorter University requires a background check, physical, and drug screen for admission. The background check and physical are repeated annually. Students accepted into the School of Nursing will receive a complete packet of information and forms upon acceptance into the program. Clinical Agencies: As a nursing student, you may be required to provide a criminal background report and/or drug screening, at your own expense, if required by the clinical agency to which you are assigned, with results reported directly to the clinical agency. If the clinical agency finds the results of the drug screening or criminal background check to be unacceptable, the School of Nursing at Shorter University may not be able to provide further educational experiences, which could impede the student s progression and completion of the nursing degree. Statement of Purpose: Please address your reason for choosing nursing as a profession and how you envision Shorter University supporting your goals in Nursing. The Admission Committee will be reading for content, grammar and spelling. This statement of purpose is a very important part of the application process.
