NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS Thank you for your interest in the National Honor Society, one of the nation s most prestigious academic honors. To join, students must meet several criteria. While a student may satisfy some membership requirements, it is not a guarantee of selection into the organization. Please review the information below before submitting your application. 1. To be considered for membership in National Honor Society, a student must: o Be a junior or second semester sophomore when applying. o Have a commitment to the principles of scholarship, service, character, and leadership. o o o o A student s commitment to all of these principles is measured through academic and community service record, faculty character ratings, and personal writing samples. A student should not apply to the National Honor Society simply to reflect membership on a college application. Have a permanent record clear of disciplinary actions. Have accumulated 60 hours of documented community service since entering high school. Have attended Wake Early College of Health & Sciences for at least one semester. Have a minimum 3.10 cumulative un-weighted grade point average in high school. 2. Please either TYPE or neatly print your application in black ink. Neatness facilitates a speedier evaluation of your application. Paperclip the pages together, in order and DO NOT STAPLE! When the application is complete, you may remove the cover sheet. An incomplete application will be scored accordingly and could affect your future as a NHS member. 3. Upon notification of acceptance in the National Honor Society, a new member induction fee of $15.00 is due. All dues may be paid with cash or personal check made out to WECHS. This fee covers the cost of the certificate and the induction ceremony. 4. Please submit your membership application to Mrs. Yde in the main office by Friday, February 27 th @ 2:30pm. Any applications received after this date will NOT be considered. Keep in mind that some parts of the application require signatures, so allow plenty of time for completion. 5. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: HONOR PLEDGE I,, as a member of the Wake Early College of Health & Sciences chapter of the National Honor Society, understand that I am expected to exhibit exemplary character as indicated by the national guidelines of our organization. In view of this, I will refrain from any violation of testing procedures including, but not limited to, copying, sharing of homework or test answers, and advising classmates of questions that will appear on tests which I have taken but they have not yet taken. I will also refrain from activities that could put my character into question such as poor behavior in class, skipping class, or any action that would warrant disciplinary action from the principal. This honor pledge also encompasses any situation where I attest to my performance and or participation in any given activity. I understand that the faculty and staff are aware of my membership in National Honor Society and that they will document any incidents of inappropriate academic behavior. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: MEMBERSHIP CONTRACT 1. I promise to attend general meetings each month. a. Members are permitted to miss two meetings in a year provided they are excused. i. Excused absence = written notice to the advisor at least 24 hours in advance. Work is not an appropriate reason to miss a monthly meeting. 2. I promise to maintain an un-weighted 3.10 GPA. a. A member who does not maintain an un-weighted 3.10 GPA will be placed on probation for one semester which means he/she will be notified in writing that if his/her GPA is not re-established at the end of that semester he/she will be dismissed from NHS. When on probation, a member is still expected to participate in NHS activities. 3. I promise to earn a minimum of 45 service hours during each year I am a member of NHS. a. 15 hours must be NHS (Blue) hours which are NHS sponsored activities. b. 15 hours must be Community (White) hours which are at your discretion. c. 15 hours must be Health &/or Science (Gold) hours which must be rooted in health and or science activities. 4. I promise to pay my annual dues of $10.00 on time each year. a. Dues are due no later than October 31 st each school year. b. If your dues are not paid, then your NHS hours will not be recognized until your dues are paid. c. If you cannot pay your dues, please contact Mrs. Farrow ASAP. 5. I promise to participate in at least 60% of NHS activities. a. The success of NHS depends on the efforts of its members. 6. I promise to exhibit good character in and outside of school. a. Any violation of this standard (i.e. cheating, forging signatures, computer hacking, skipping class, detentions or referrals, plagiarism, etc) could require the member to go before the NHS sponsor and the Faculty Council for disciplinary review.
