Second Grade The Second Grade curriculum offers a firm foundation in religion, integrated language arts, math, science, social studies, and technology. Children are encouraged to grow and learn in a safe and positive classroom setting. All students are assigned to a teacher certified by the State of Florida in order to ensure students reach their highest potential. Religion The religion program provides the core of a Catholic education. The program is designed to prepare students to deepen their faith and relationships with both God and neighbor. Religion is taught in a loving and prayerful environment. The second grade program focuses on the life of Jesus, the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and the Eucharist, the Great Commandments, the Mass, Mary and the Saints. Students participate in a weekly liturgy. In addition, supplemental resources are utilized in order to enhance the religion curriculum. The use of technology is encouraged and included in student activities. Language Arts The reading program utilizes the literature based Harcourt Journeys reading series. The following skills are taught through literature: phonics, vocabulary, spelling, reading strategies, grammar, and writing. Reading is taught in both whole group and small group settings. Differentiated instruction is provided in small groups to meet the needs of all students. Students are instructed in writing through the use and application of the Six Traits of Writing. They are also given weekly spelling tests. In addition, all students are encouraged to participate in the Scholastic Reading Counts Program.

Math The math curriculum is based on a combination of the Florida Common Core and the Diocesan Standards. The McGraw Hill math series, along with math notebooks and hands on engaging activities are used to provide meaningful math instruction. Topics include: place value through 1000, addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers with regrouping, time, money, measurement, data/graphs, geometry, fractions, and multiplication/division concepts. Particular attention is paid to word problems, problem solving strategies, and automatic recall of math facts. Sunshine Math is also used to enhance critical thinking skills. Math centers provide for small group and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students. Science Through the use of questioning, exploration, and observation, students are instructed in the following units of study: Earth Systems and Patterns, Properties and Changes in Matter, Forms of Energy, Force and Changes in Motion, and Plants and Animals. The Harcourt Science Fusion Series is used to support the curriculum. Social Studies The second grade curriculum focuses on the following: My Community, My Country, Working to Meet Our Needs, The World Around Us, Celebrating Our Traditions, Our Nation Past and Present. Technology Through the use of SmartBoard Technology and classroom desktops, the children take an active, hands-on role in their learning. This technology is integrated into all curriculum areas..
