Master Program SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING IN PRODUCTION
Sustainable engineering in Production Sustainable development is defined as Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable engineering refers to the integration of social, environmental, and economic considerations into product, process, and their design methods. Sustainable engineering requires the consideration of the complete product and process lifecycle during the design phase. The intent is to minimize environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle (that includes material, production, usage and end of life of product) while simultaneously maximizing the benefits to social and economic stakeholders. Sustainable engineering is a way of engineering that meets the needs of the present, preserves the environment, and considers the possible needs of future generations. It requires a lifecycle analysis so you can take into account not only the immediate costs and effects, but also the resources required to prepare the materials and the resources needed to maintain them. In Palestine with the limited natural resources, human capacity building to use such resources efficiently is of vital importance. Hence human resources will be developed to use the natural resources efficiently on one hand and preserve the environment and improve the employability and standards of living of people on another hand. Mission The joint Sustainable Engineering in Production program between Birzeit University and An- Najah University aims at contributing in the sustainable development in Palestine, by raising the national industrial quality and production level while preserving the environment and efficiently utilizing resources. This is consistent with the international trends for conserving natural resources, utilizing renewable energy resources, taking into account water conservation, pollution reduction and implementing Reuse Remanufacture, and Recycle processes. Therefore, the programconforms very well to the principles of sustainability in manufacturing, and production processes in the industrial sectors in Palestine and abroad.
Objectives The main objective of the program is to build Palestinian human resources capable of implementing sustainable engineering in production. The program aims to achieve the following specific objectives: 1- Development of production processes and quality control in national industry to increase competitive capabilities of local products. 2- Qualifying local human resources and providing engineers with analytical tools in the fields of quality, sustainability and clean production. 3- Enhancing knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, resource efficiency and utilization of local resources while preserving the environment. 4- Establishing scientific research in quality control, sustainable and clean production and its applications. Admission requirements Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, Electrical, Environment, Material, mechatronicsor Civil Engineering from accredited university with grade good or above.remedial course could be required in certain cases.
Graduates Graduates of this program will have a comprehensive overview in sustainable production. They can integrate sustainability through efficient utilizing of materials, water and energy while decreasing their influence on environment. They will gain analytical tools for the evaluation and assessment of sustainability through life cycle analysis. The role of the graduate will be important for all private and public institutions involvedin this field. Students will gain the tools for engineering decision making and its applications to solve sustainability problems. Moreover, the graduates will have a wide range of knowledge to integrate sustainability principles along with production and quality management. This opens new employment opportunities for all industrial and manufacturing companies and improves the employee quality and performance.opportunities and fields in which the graduate couldbe employed include; Manager / production engineer Sustainable product design engineer Quality and sustainability engineer Sustainability consultant Industrial project manager The main institutions and establishments where graduate can work include: All factories, commercial enterprises and industrial establishments (engineer and administrative) Consultancycompanies Sustainable development institutions Governmental institutions like Environment Authority, Ministries of industry, Trade and Local government and municipalities. Academic field in universities and technical colleges. National &International cooperation The Master program in Sustainable Engineering is developed in context of European TEMPUS project as a joint program between Birzeit University and An- Najah University and in close cooperation with Federation of Palestinian Industries. Program has strong relations with international programs and research groups including: Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Technical University of Berlin in Germany, and University of Ljubljana in Slovenia
