What is Academic Advising? Academic Advising is: Assisting students in establishing and affirming career/educational goals. Providing guidance in designing their educational degree plan. Assisting students in learning more about the college resources, such as financial aid, student life, tutoring, and workshops. Providing information regarding the transfer process and scholarships. Providing opportunities to tour four year universities. Embracing diversity and promoting critical thinking. Empowering communities and having the courage to change students lives. Connecting with students to define possibilities and build work relationships.

What can you expect from your Academic Advisor? Confidentiality by adhering to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) standards. Assistance in explaining academic policies and procedures, CORE curriculum, and graduation requirements. Assistance in exploring your program of study, educational, and career goals. An accessible, engaged, approachable, knowledgeable, and responsive Academic Advisor who continues to keep abreast of the research, theories, legislation policies, and developments that affect your educational programs and services. Assistance in building meaningful relationships with instructors and staff members.

What can an Academic Advisor expect of a Mountain View College Student? That a student will. Plan early. o Submit official copies of transcripts from all previous colleges. o Be an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience. o Follow through on advising recommendations in a timely manner. Take responsibility for your learning by reviewing: o The Dallas County Community College District Catalog o MVC credit course offerings o College policies, procedures, and requirements o Student Planner/Calendar. Accept responsibility for your actions, inactions, and decisions that affect your educational goals and progress. Be aware of your rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Take an interest in your major/degree.

Utilize advising tools, econnect, ecampus, college websites, and the course catalog to gather information and track your academic progress. Seek help when needed. Read your Academic Advising Syllabus. Review the Student Code of Conduct. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov (if applicable). Attend Pre-assessment activities (if applicable). Complete the TSI assessment (if applicable). Take the career assessment. Activate your econnect account. Log into ecampus and review the tutorials and information under the various tabs. Learn how to register online.

Review the District catalog, located at www.mountainviewcollege.edu. Learn how to become involved in campus life. Activate your DCCCD Money Card via econnect and select your refund option. Mountain View College, Everything is About Student Success! Are you in your first year of college? What should you do? Learn how to register online. Select your program of study on econnect. Create an Educational Plan with Advisor. Attend New Student Orientation (if applicable). Enroll in freshman seminar classes (HDEV/EDUC/Computer Literacy). Understand the developmental course sequence. Attend a Financial Literacy class. Met with your advisor to go over your academic progress. Learn how to calculate grade point average (GPA). Plan your registration for next semester.

Learn about college resources available to you. - Veteran Affairs - Continuing Education Classes - TRiO - Male Access Program - Counseling Center Instructional support (Math Lab, Writing Center, Reading Center, Computer Labs) - Health Center Complete a student learning outcome (SLO) by visiting your Academic Advisor. A SLO is a way for advisors to ensure that you are mastering the tools needed to be successful in college such as: learning to calculate GPA, register on line, use ecampus, etc. Sign up for an academic workshop or attended an activity from the Office of Student Life.

These programs include but are not limited to lectures, art gallery visits/receptions and performances that provide students with a stimulating co-curricular education.
