Background to Sigma Theta Tau (STTI) Sigma Theta Tau is an International Nursing Honor Society. A global community of nurse leaders members in 475 chapters distributed throughout 90 countries world wide. Facilitates the sharing of knowledge, scholarship, community service and learning.
Founders of STTI Founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana School of Nursing, Indianapolis, USA.
Membership Today there are over 125,000 active members in more than 480 chapters around the globe.

Nonprofit Apolitical Organization This organization is nonprofit corporation does not distribute gains, profits or dividends to the members. The Honor Society does not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office.
Aim To improve the health of the world s people. This aim pursued through links with international organizations like the United Nations. Millennium Development goals (MDGs) set to be achieved by 2015

Why now in? To increase the professionalism of Nursing in RCSI would be the first School of Nursing & Midwifery in the Middle East to form a Chapter RCSI, could through Sigma form meaningful collaborative links with existing Schools of Nursing in the Middle East
Potential Benefits to Members Research funding is available to Sigma members. Access to Sigma s extensive research library and publications. Receive the quarterly peer reviewed Journal of Nursing Scholarship. Funding is available for training and development e.g. International Post Doc. Fellowship in Nursing in USA Research collaboration and networks
Criteria for Membership -3 categories a. Students in Basic Program: Baccalaureate or equivalent nursing degree which leads to the first professional nursing degree. Students should have completed at least one-half of the required nursing curriculum. b. Graduate Program: An accredited program of graduate study in nursing including: master, post-master, doctoral, and post doctoral. Students should have completed a minimum of onequarter of the required graduate curriculum.
c. Nurse Leader Registered Nurse. Legally recognized to practice in her/his country. With a minimum baccalaureate or the equivalent in any field who has demonstrated achievement in nursing.
Chapter Development 6 Phases
Phases Phase 1 : Submit a Pre- application Form for approval Phase 2: SON forms an independent local nursing honor society: The Ruffaida Honor Society Appointed a Board of Directors Determined membership eligibility requirements per bylaws Planned the societies first budget Phase 3. Meet all Sigma requirements Phase 4: Application reviewed by STTI Review task Force & other STTI Boards Phase 5: Work towards planning own Chapter(December, 2014) Phase 6: Continued Chapter assistance from STII headquarters
Cost Sigma s international fee is US$69.50 per member = 26.201BD Local chapter annual fee: 26.201BD Retired members and full time students pay half fee.
