Dulles Day Plane Pull Clothing Donation Drive Are you ready for an easy way to raise more money for your Plane Pull team? It s as simple as cleaning out your closets! The following pages will walk your team through the donation drive process. You can turn gently used clothing and household items into dollars for your team with a Donation Drive fundraising event. Your team will get paid for every pound of items you collect. Donation drives are fun for adults and kids, so everyone can get involved. All you have to do to get started is choose an event date and pick a location somewhere easy for people to drop off their goods. Once you ve got the logistics confirmed, fill out the booking form and you re ready to go! Follow the steps and event tips on the next few pages to make your Donation Drive fundraiser a breeze!

How to Have a Successful Donation Drive 6+ weeks before donation drive Choose an event date and fill out Savers donation drive paperwork. Define collection point (ex. Community Center, retail parking lot, library, school, etc.) 4-6 weeks before donation drive Set a goal for your fundraiser and communicate it to your team. Post event details on your team website, Facebook, etc. Pre-collection is key. Start collecting now! Help friends and family clean out closets and garages. Who can resist an offer to help de-clutter? Ask if you can pick up unsold items for your Donation Drive at yard sales and local church sales. Gather items left behind at the Laundromat, or help local businesses by collecting unclaimed items in the lost and found Contact realtors or storage units who may have clients that moved and left sellable items behind. 1-4 weeks before donation drive PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE! Pass out flyers to everyone you know. Attach collection bags to the flyers and ask people to fill the bag. Hang posters around your event and at businesses throughout the community. Think coffee shops, grocery stores, community centers, restaurants, office buildings, etc. Post event details on social media and do regular updates. Do multiple posts the week of the event. Use images to stimulate interest and ask your friends to share. (see sample posts) 1 post 4-weeks out 1 post 3-weeks out 2 posts 2-weeks out 4 posts 1-week out Ask your team members, co-workers and friends to post on their personal social media pages. Send an email to your contact list with details about the donation drive and ask them to donate. Place a free calendar event in your local newspaper, parenting publications and websites. Approach large Homeowner s Associations and ask them to announce your event to residents. Set up mini-drives with local business offices. Leverage your network of friends and colleagues. Offer to pick up donations from those who cannot bring them to your drive. Team work!

Day of event Have an adult rep from your team be the main point of contact for the day, and be on site. Assign shifts for volunteers to greet donors, unload cars and hand out tax receipts. Provide water, chairs and shade/tent for volunteers. Have a first-aid kit on hand always a good idea. Ask volunteers to make posters to wave at passing traffic. Bring extra bags and boxes to contain loose items donated. Ask volunteers with vehicles to do pickups as needed. Event tips: The more items you check off from this list, the more successful you will be! We can t say it enough: Pre-collection is key. The more you collect, the more money you ll raise! Attach garbage bags to as many flyers as possible. This will give your donor(s) a goal fill the bag! With pre-collection, you can keep track of how close you are getting to your goal. If your goal is financially focused, keep this math in mind: The average weight of a kitchen garbage bag is 14 lbs. Your organization is paid $.20/lb. So, if your goal is $1,000, you ll need to collect 5,000 pounds of goods. At 14 pounds per bag, that s about 400 bags. Easy! Work your network tell family, friends, church, school, work, clubs, etc. about the drive. Harness that competitive spirit! Have an overall goal for your team and set individual goals for each team member. Promote an overall competition for most items collected. Firm up your volunteer schedule in advance of your big day. Recruit volunteers with cars to do event day pick-ups for those who can t drop-off goods. And don t forget... Have fun!
