Services available to people without a Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner Most people receive the majority of their primary health care through their family physician or nurse practitioner. There are services available to people to both supplement the primary health care they receive from their physician or nurse practitioner and these services are also available to those without a family physician or nurse practitioner. Accessing primary health care: - Hospital emergency departments are available to all requiring emergency care as well as to support those people without a family physician or NP for care such as prescription refills, referrals for tests, etc. - Non-emergency medical issues can be discussed with a registered nurse 24/7 by dialing 811. - Community pharmacies often hold blood pressure monitoring and blood glucose (sugar) monitoring. Call your local pharmacy to find out what services are available in your area. - Women (aged 40 and over) can access screening mammograms by calling 1-800-565-0548 for an appointment. Screening mammograms are done at Yarmouth Hospital Diagnostic Imaging department and on the mobile breast screening van. Women can self refer for a screening mammogram. - Victoria Order of Nurses (VON) offers a wide array of in home and community based services. Foot care clinics, wound care, in home nursing support, meal programs, hospice/palliative care, etc. Contact VON for more information 742-4512. - Continuing Care (Home Care) offers home support (such as personal care, respite, and light housekeeping), nursing (such as dressing changes, catheter care, and intravenous therapy) and home oxygen. The patient can see a nurse or a social worker in their home setting or in office. They can also access a volunteer.
