The Lead Mechanic serves as a non-exempt member and reports to the Fleet Supervisor. 2. Summary Description: Complex mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus, passenger vehicles, light and heavy duty trucks, marine equipment and motors, other equipment, including gasoline, electric, and diesel motors. 3. Nature of Work: The Lead Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains fire apparatus, passenger vehicles, light and heavy duty trucks and other equipment. This includes, but is not restricted to the units, pumps, compressors, mobile and station generators. Operates and inspects machines or equipment to identify discrepancies. Dismantles, repairs, reassembles vehicles or equipment utilizing hand tools and hoists. Examines parts for damage or excessive wear using precision measuring equipment. Repairs, rebuilds, overhauls, replaces defective assemblies and components such as engines, transmissions, collector gear boxes, transfer cases, differentials, and both water or hydraulic pumps. Tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. Welds broken parts and structural members. Fills out parts requests utilizing manufacturer s parts manual. Documents work orders. May be required to perform roadside repairs, including during inclement weather. Maintains and cleans work areas, maintenance compound, and parking areas. Employee must provide own hand tools at time of employment. The Lead Mechanic should mentor and coach Mechanics in the Fleet Branch. Page 1 of 3
4. Physical Requirements: Heavy physical stress on back. Involves frequent lifting over 50 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, working above ground, under vehicles, or on irregular surfaces. Requires very frequent lifting, positioning, and carrying of automotive assemblies, tools, and equipment weighing 30 to 50 pounds and heavier, Items in excess of 70 pounds are normally hoisted by mechanical devices or involve more than one person. Requires prolonged standing on concrete floors and working in cramped or awkward positions. 5. Illustrative Tasks: The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Repairs, maintains and overhauls all vehicles, both line and staff. Performs maintenance and repairs on fire pumps, hydraulics, and air conditioning systems. Performs repairs to fire districts radios, lights, and sirens. Performs repairs to other equipment located at the fire district stations. Provides daily and monthly reports to include, but not limited to, all maintenance and repairs completed and the cost associated with each. May be required to work additional hours to include weekends and holidays. May be required to work in inclement weather. May be required to work during disasters.
