Summary: SLSDC is recruiting for a mixed series position which will be responsible for review and analysis of environmental and industrial hygiene issues at the Corporation, and a planned program to ensure a safe, clean, and healthful environment for Corporation employees and customers. The position requires an applicant to have experience in industrial hygiene or environmental engineering. The selected candidate will be required to perform both types of assignments. Industrial hygienist assignments will involve surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures and the effectiveness of existing control measures; devising control measures; evaluating proposed new work processes or materials; and planning and directing a health education program designed to educate the Corporation s personnel as to means of preventing occupational disease and their role in controlling hazards. Environmental engineering assignments will involve conducting comprehensive engineering studies to identify any environmental deficiencies and determine the most feasible corrective measures, and recommend appropriate action to comply with applicable regulations; providing advice on new environmental regulations having an impact on Corporation programs; and providing advice on matters concerning environmental compliance; protection of natural resources, ground water resources, fish and wildlife; sanitary conditions of water supply systems; environmental matters associated with community relations; and containment and disposal of major oil spills.

2 External Announcement No. SLS-DE Page 2 Qualifications Basic Requirements: Applicants must meet the requirements in A or B below: A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in industrial hygiene or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.: B. A combination of education and experience, which includes at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in A above, plus experience that provided a means of obtaining a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene or environmental engineering and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in industrial hygiene or environmental engineering. Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, the applicant must have three years of professional level experience which includes nonroutine industrial hygiene or environmental engineering work, as described in B above, that required and was characterized by (1) a professional knowledge of industrial hygiene or environmental engineering; (2) a professional ability to apply such knowledge to problems; and (3) positive continuing development of professional knowledge and ability. The specialized experience requirement can also be met by the following combinations of education and experience: 1. Superior academic achievement at the baccalaureate level in an industrial hygiene or environmental engineering curriculum plus two years of professional level experience, as described above; or

Completion of a five-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene or environmental engineering plus two years of professional level experience, as described above; or 3. Completion of a master's degree in industrial hygiene or environmental engineering plus one year of professional level experience, as described above. Additional qualifications: In addition to meeting the basic and specialized qualification requirements above, candidates will be evaluated on their knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) in the areas below: 1. Professional knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable to planning and carrying out a comprehensive industrial hygiene program. 2. Knowledge of professional environmental engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to planning and carrying out a comprehensive environmental management program. 3. Knowledge of environmental regulations (i.e. EPA and NYSDEC) for storing, handling and/or disposing of hazardous materials and wastes, and safety regulations (i.e. OSHA and ANSI). 4. Ability to investigate health problems which arise among workers, to determine probable cause, and to recommend measures to protect the workers health. 5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to prepare reports of findings and recommendations and specifications for procurement actions, and to instruct and inform others, and to persuade others to comply with regulations. 6. Skill in use of a variety of computer software, including computer aided drafting (CAD), spreadsheets, and database management programs. Candidates should provide a written statement showing how their education and experience has equipped them to meet the KSAs above. Statements should include information on specific work assignments and accomplishments in each of the areas. The information should relate to work experience documented in the resume or other application materials. KSA statements should be limited to no more than one page for each KSA. Candidates will be evaluated on how their experience meets the KSAs above, and assigned a rating based on a maximum score of 100 points. Veteran's preference points will be added to the score of those applicants providing proof of qualifying military service (see "How to Apply" below). Only well-qualified surplus/displaced applicants will be considered eligible candidates for priority placement for this position. To be considered well-qualified, a candidate must have a rating of 92 or higher, before the addition of veteran's preference points.
