1 MacBook and OS X Basics Users will learn basic care, features, icons, and gestures for the MacBook Air. Modified March 10, 2014 TRAINING DISTRIBUTION AND BASICS (ITC) Info and Care 11 MacBook Air Model A1465 OS X Mavericks Camera /Video recorder Trackpad and keyboard 2 USB ports Projector dongle will be provided Microsoft Office is included on teacher computers only Your MacBook Air does not include: CD/DVD drive Internet port Projector port (will need dongle) headphones/earbuds with microphone External mouse Clean screen with anti static screen wipes. Do not use alcohol. Show extension cord show how to remove duck head and add thicker cord (more durable for lying across the floor). Wrap the thinner cord loosely around power block wings. (Wrapping tightly creates stress on the cord.) NOTE: IF you remove the duck head to add the cord please keep in a safe place. Show how to plug in to laptop Do not leave in cold or hot vehicle Keep away from liquids The MacBook Air is wireless. (No ethernet port.) PLEASE WAIT TO : Address downloading Apps Apple ID/iTunes account SETTING UP YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT (USE SAFARI Browser for email until the BLC covers setup.) MacBook Accessories you may want to purchase additionally: (NOT provided) Teacher Devices do NOT come with a Bag/Backpack. Make sure you have a padded bag for transporting your device. Students will receive a Backpack Inexpensive covers and padded cases or sleeves can be found on Amazon or at Walmart. Be sure to search for 11 MacBook Air Model A1465 For cord management you could choose to purchase Quirky 45w Power Curl for Macbook Air keyboard covers external wireless mouse Turn On Login Open cover and press power button to power on. Trackpad Info You will need to press down on the trackpad to click. Enter username (same username as your email) and password. (pw=teacher and then prompt to change. USE your school email password)
2 Note: IF the login doesn t work the first time, have the teacher delete all info. in username and password, and start over. Trackpad info YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY CLICK ON THE TRACKPAD Apple Desktop: Apple Menu bar top left. The name of the open app appears beside the Apple icon. Systems Status Icons top right Show how to turn on battery percentage. Click on battery, check show percentage. Menus and toolbars are contextual they change based on the app you have open. Note: Having a cluttered desktop slows down your machine substantially. Dock Briefly mention this is the dock frequently used apps (programs) We will customize a little bit later Trackpad You can change the settings and see video examples: Apple Icon on menu bar >System Preferences> trackpad or System Preferences may be available on the dock Best practice is to use thumb and index as click and drag. 2 fingers click opens context menu like a right click on pc 2 fingers to scroll move fingers bottom to top to scroll down. Zoom Control 2 fingers stretch apart 3 finger left/right to change pages or switch between apps 3 fingers swipe up opens mission control to see everything you have open Spotlight Spotlight Searches for an app or item, does math, spelling, definition, etc. Finder
3 Launchpad where you locate your apps like Programs on a PC Dock Section to right of line Programs and the Desktop Minimize, Closing or Quitting Apps To see all apps, click on the Launchpad icon in the dock. If you want to add an app to the dock, drag the icon onto the dock. To remove from dock, drag onto desktop, release when cloud appears. This does not delete the app, just takes it off the dock. You can open from the Launchpad. Dock row of frequently used app icons across the bottom, can drag to organize. Customizing is possible. You can still open all apps from the Launchpad. Section to right has minimized windows Trash 2 finger click to empty Programs are called apps. When launched, the app s name appears in the Apple menu. **There is a difference between CLOSING and app and QUITTING an app. Close, Minimize, Maximize Minimize Icon for app appears beside the Trash icon in the Dock. Click to view. Maximize Resizes the screen with Apple menu and Status icons remaining in view. Arrows Goes to full screen view. Apple menu and Status icons disappear. Scroll over the top of the screen to reveal the Apple menu and Status Icons to resize. Quitting an app click on App name in the menu bar select Quit <Appname> or Command + Q + Q Even when you close an app (red close button), it is still running on the dock. A light appears under an open app on the Dock. 4 Safari Browser Use Safari for email UNTIL SUBSEQUENT TRAINING SHOW OTHER OPTIONS. Safari is recommended This is the ONLY Browser that on there at this point. You can download Chrome from the website later on your own. Safari Bookmarks Several ways to add a bookmark Bookmarks on the toolbar > Add Bookmark First click on the book icon there is a + sign at the bottom create folders for your subject areas. Then when you are at a site you want to bookmark, those folders you created show up Add Bookmark to ISS Website Safari Top Sites Shows sites frequently visited. You can customize. Click and hold the plus sign in front of the URL and choose to add it to Top Sites. Download Java / FileWave Kiosk Wave 1 may need to do this also You are going to download Java 7.51 from the Filewave Kiosk On the System Status Toolbar at the top, Click on the Filewave icon Click on Install Software The Kiosk will open and you will see Java in the list click the install button In the future, there may be additional software added to the kiosk for you to easily download as needed. PowerSchool Powerschool Fix security setting so Java will run for Gradebook System Preferences Security and privacy Lock shows up in the bottom left corner/click on lock
5 Use password to get in (Username and password that you created for this machine) Change Allows apps downloaded from.. to Anywhere Click on the lock again Close that window Launching Gradebook Log in to PowerSchool click on the arrow icon beside the word gradebook (DON T click on the word gradebook) it will send the launchgradebook file to the download button beside the address bar click launchgradebook and it will install and run like you are used to You will have to do this each time you want to open the gradebook for now. There is an issue with the gradebook shortcut wanting an older version of Java, so we are not installing it at this point. PowerSchool has said that in a few weeks there will be no issues with Java we will see. Apple ID This will NOT happen at CATS! Will happen at school site. Apple ID creation will happen at a later time (soon) so we can walk you through creating one so you will NOT be required to enter a credit card number. On these devices you will need an Apple ID that is your professional account associated with your ISS email. FINDER Documents Locating and Creating Subfolders Click Finder Click Documents To add a folder, click on settings and then add folder Create class/subject folders Create a folder for other stored docs (meeting notes, professional dev. etc)
6 Change Downloads on the Dock from stacks to a folder they asked because they were getting confused secondary click on downloads beside of the trash can change display from stacks to folder Flash Drives insert flash drive icon (should) show immediately on desktop. Right Click to eject it Printers TO BE DONE AT SCHOOL SITE Power Power Down at the end of the day or at least weekly. Click the apple at the top left of the screen > shutdown If you have to force an application to shutdown two finger click on dock click on the apple upper right hand corner > option+command+esc Last resort if whole computer is frozen (not just a specific app) press and hold the power button
