SLO REQUIRED PRIOR TO ADMISSION TO ALL DEGREE PROGRAMS IN MUSIC GENERAL SLO (Knowledge and Skill) The prospective music major will demonstrate the ability to relate musical sound to notation and terminology both quickly and accurately enough to undertake basic musicianship studies in the freshman year. The prospective music major will demonstrate achievement in music performance sufficient to gain acceptance into one of the Department of Music s defined applied music areas. SLO REQUIRED PRIOR TO ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL DEGREE PROGRAMS IN MUSIC BM The prospective music major will possess exceptional talent, the potential to develop highlevel musicianship, artistic sensibilities, and above all a strong sense of commitment. Students should be evaluated and screened for continuation periodically throughout the degree program. Students should be evaluated and screened for continuation periodically throughout the degree program. The prospective musician-teacher will show a personnel commitment to the art of music, to teaching music as an element of civilization, and to encouraging the artistic and intellectual development of students, plus the ability to fulfill these commitments as an independent professional. The prospective musician-teacher will show potential to lead students to an understanding of music as an art form, as a means of communication, and as a part of their intellectual and cultural heritage. The prospective musician-teacher will show potential to inspire others and to excite the imagination of students, engendering a respect for music and a desire for musical knowledge and experiences. 1

SLO COMMON TO ALL DEGREE PROGRAMS IN MUSIC I. MUSICIANSHIP: Musicianship is the body of knowledge, skills, practices and insights that enables music-making at any level. In the opinion of the Department of Music at KSU Musicianship may be at once knowledge, skill and attitude. GENERAL SLO (Knowledge, Skill, and Attitude) The candidate will acquire sufficient musicianship, appropriate to her area of concentration, to function regularly as a performer, a listener, a historian, a composer, a theorist, and a teacher, and to communicate effectively across the specializations of musical practice. SPECIFIC SLO (Knowledge) The candidate will acquire fundamental competencies in the use of musical terminologies. The candidate will acquire conceptual understanding of musical components and processes. The candidate will acquire continued practice in creating, interpreting, presenting, analyzing, and evaluating music. The candidate will develop the three competencies listed directly above through constant use and expansion. The candidate will acquire fundamental competencies in aural and rhythmic skills. The candidate will acquire fundamental competencies in the reading of notation. SPECIFIC SLO (Attitude) The candidate will acquire increasing understanding of various musical cultures and historical periods. The candidate will acquire capacities to integrate musical knowledge and skills. The candidate will acquire capabilities for independent work in the music profession. II. GENERAL STUDIES: Studies in other areas of human achievement are important in the education of musicians. GENERAL SLO (Attitude) Students will be equipped to function and interact with the total society. Students will be equipped to adapt to changes in the society. Students will fulfill a role as a public advocate for music. Students will gain an awareness that the combined influence of musicianship and general studies is profound and far-reaching in establishing a foundation for artistic and intellectual development. 2

SPECIFIC SLO (Knowledge) Students will study the natural and physical sciences, social sciences, and communications, as well as other areas of the arts and humanities. SPECIFIC SLO (Attitude) Students will gain an awareness of differences and commonalities regarding work in artistic, scientific, and humanistic domains. Students will develop a personal artistic/intellectual mission. Students will develop a sense of individual responsibility for cultural development as a whole and musical development in particular 3

Students will gain an Understanding of and experience in arts forms other than music. Student will gain the ability to think, speak, and write clearly and effectively. Students who earn liberal arts degrees must be able to communicate with precision, cogency, and force. Students will develop an ability to compare culture and history from a variety of perspectives. Students will develop an understanding of, and experience in thinking about, moral and ethical problems. Student will develop the capacity to explain and defend one s views effectively and rationally. Instruction in a performing medium, participation in large and small ensembles, and experience in solo performance develop these competencies. The student should acquire the ability to sight-read. Instruction in a performing medium, participation in large and small ensembles, and experience in solo performance develop these competencies. 5

SLO COMMON TO PROFESSIONAL DEGREES IN MUSIC BM AND BMUED GENERAL SLO (Knowledge, Skill, and Attitude) Students must acquire the common body of knowledge and skills that constitutes a basic foundation for work and continuing growth as a music professional. Students must demonstrate achievement of professional, entry-level competence in the area of specialization, including significant technical mastery, capability to produce work and solve professional problems independently, and a coherent set of artistic/intellectual goals which are evident in their work. Studies in the area of specialization must continue throughout the degree program. Student s must demonstrate their competence by developing a body of work for evaluation in the major area of study. A senior project or presentation is required. Students must have the ability to communicate musical ideas, concepts, and requirements to professional and lay-persons related to the practice of the major field. Such communication may involve musical, oral, written, and visual media. Students must have opportunities to build musicianship to an advanced level and to broaden knowledge of musical elements, structure, repertories, and contexts. SPECIFIC SLO IN PERFORMANCE Students must acquire: Technical skill requisite for artistic self-expression in at least one major performance area at a level appropriate for the particular music concentration. (Skill) An overview understanding of the repertory in their major performance area and the ability to perform from a cross section of that repertory. (Knowledge) The ability to read at sight with fluency. (Skill) Knowledge and skills sufficient to work as a leader and in collaboration on matters of musical interpretation. Rehearsal and conducting skills are required as appropriate to the particular music concentration. (Skill and Knowledge) Keyboard competency. Experiences in secondary performance areas are recommended. (Skill and Knowledge) Growth in artistry, technical skills, collaborative competence and knowledge of repertory through regular ensemble experiences. Ensembles should be varied both in size and nature. (Skill, Knowledge, and Attitude) Students must demonstrate achievement of professional, entry-level competence in the area of specialization, including significant technical mastery, capability to produce work and solve professional problems independently, and a coherent set of artistic/intellectual goals which are evident in their work. Studies in the area of specialization must continue throughout the degree program. (Skill, Knowledge, and Attitude) SPECIFIC SLO IN AURAL SKILLS AND ANALYSIS Students must acquire: An understanding of the common elements and organizational patterns of music and their interaction, and the ability to employ this understanding in aural, verbal, and visual analyses. (Skill and Knowledge) Sufficient understanding of musical forms, processes, and structures to use this knowledge in compositional, performance, scholarly, pedagogical, and historical contexts, according to the requisites of their specializations. The ability to place music in historical, cultural, and stylistic contexts. (Knowledge) SPECIFIC SLO IN COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION Students must acquire: Rudimentary capacity to create derivative or original music both extemporaneously and in written form. (Skill and Knowledge) 7

SLO COMMON TO PROFESSIONAL DEGREES IN MUSIC BM AND BMUED CONTINUED The ability to compose, improvise, or both at a basic level in one or more musical languages, for example the imitation of various musical styles, improvisation on pre-existing materials, the creation of original compositions, experimentations with various sound sources, and manipulating the common elements in nontraditional ways. (Skill) SPECIFIC SLO IN HISTORY AND REPERTORY Students must acquire: A basic knowledge of music history through the present time. (Knowledge) An acquaintance with repertories beyond the area of specialization. All students must be exposed to a large and varied body of music through study, and attendance at recitals, concerts, operas, and musical theater productions and other performances. (Knowledge and Attitude) SPECIFIC SLO IN TECHNOLOGY Students must acquire: A basic overview understanding of how technology serves the field of music as a whole. (Knowledge) Working knowledge of the technological developments applicable to their area of specialization. (Knowledge) SPECIFIC SLO IN SYNTHESIS While synthesis is a lifetime process, by the end of undergraduate study students should be: Working independently on a variety of musical problems by combining their capabilities in performance; aural, verbal, and visual analyses; composition; and improvisation; and history and repertory. (Attitude) Forming and defending value judgments about music. (Attitude) Acquiring the tools to work with a comprehensive repertory, including music from various cultures of the work and music of their own time. (Skill, Knowledge) Understanding basic interrelationships and interdependencies among the various professions and activities that constitute the musical enterprise. (Attitude) Student s must demonstrate their competence by developing a body of work for evaluation in the major area of study. A senior project or presentation in the major area is recommended. SLO SPECIFIC TO THE BM IN PERFORMANCE DEGREE: The student will acquire comprehensive capabilities in the major performing medium including the ability to work independently to prepare performances at the highest possible level. The student will give solo and ensemble performances in a variety of formal and informal settings. A senior recital and a junior recital are required. SPECIFIC SLO (Knowledge) The student will acquire knowledge of applicable solo and ensemble literature; and orientation to and experience with the fundamentals of pedagogy. 9

SLO SPECIFIC TO THE BM IN MUSIC EDUCATION DEGREE: GENERAL SLO (Attitude) The prospective music teacher should have: Personnel commitment to the art of music, to teaching music as an element of civilization, and to encouraging the artistic and intellectual development of students, plus the ability to fulfill these commitments as an independent professional. The ability to lead students to an understanding of music as an art form, as a means of communication, and as a part of their intellectual and cultural heritage. The capability to inspire others and to excite the imagination of students, engendering a respect for music and a desire for musical knowledge and experiences. The ability to articulate logical rationales for music as a basic component of general education, and to present the goals and objectives of a music program effectively to parents, professional colleagues, and administrators. The ability to work productively within specific education systems, promote scheduling patterns that optimize music instruction, maintain positive relationships with individuals of various social and ethnic groups, and be empathetic with students and colleagues of differing backgrounds. The ability to evaluate ideas, methods, and policies in the arts, the humanities, and in arts education for their impact on the musical and cultural development of students. The ability and desire to remain current with developments in the art of music and in teaching, to make independent, in-depth evaluations of their relevance, and to use the results to improve musicianship and teaching skills. 10

SLO SPECIFIC TO THE BM IN MUSIC EDUCATION DEGREE CONTINUED SPECIFIC SLO: The following competencies and procedures provide means for developing the preceding general attributes: I. Music Competencies. In addition to those basic competencies outlined in the outcomes common to all Professional degrees in Music, the following apply to the preparation of music teachers: Conducting: The prospective music teacher must be a competent conductor, able to create accurate and musically expressive performances with various types of performing groups and in general classroom situations. Instruction in conducting includes, score reading and the integration of analysis, style, performance practices, instrumentation, and baton techniques. Laboratory experiences that give the student opportunities to apply rehearsal techniques and procedures are essential. Arranging. The prospective music teacher should be able to arrange and adapt music from a variety of sources to meet the needs and ability levels of school performing groups and classroom situations. Functional Performance. In addition to the skills required for all musicians, functional performance abilities in keyboard and the voice are essential. Functional performance abilities in instruments appropriate to the student s teaching specialization are also essential. SPECIFIC SLO (Knowledge) Analysis/History/Literature. The prospective music teacher should be able to apply analytical and historical knowledge to curriculum development, lesson planning, and daily classroom and performance activities. Teachers should be prepared to relate their understanding of musical styles, the literature of diverse cultural sources, and the music of various historical periods. VOCAL/CHORAL AND GENERAL MUSIC EDUCATION MAJORS The prospective music teacher in the vocal/choral or general music teaching specialization will have: Sufficient vocal and pedagogical skill to teach effective use of the voice. (Skill) Experience in solo vocal performance and chorale ensemble. (Knowledge and Skill) Performance ability sufficient to use at least one instrument as a teaching tool and to provide, transpose, and improvise accompaniments. (Skill) Laboratory experience in teaching beginning vocal techniques individually, in small groups, and in larger classes. (Skill) 11

SLO SPECIFIC TO THE BM IN MUSIC EDUCATION DEGREE CONTINUED INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EDUCATION MAJORS The prospective music teacher in the instrumental music teaching specialization will have: Knowledge of and performance ability on wind, string, and percussion instruments sufficient to teach beginning students effectively in groups. (Knowledge) Experience in solo instrumental performance, as well as in both small and large instrumental ensembles. (Knowledge and Skill) Laboratory experience in teaching beginning instrumental students individually, in small groups, and in larger classes. (Skill) 12

SLO SPECIFIC TO THE BM IN MUSIC EDUCATION DEGREE CONTINUED II. Teaching Competencies. GENERAL SLO The musician-teacher should understand the total contemporary educational programincluding relationships among the arts-in order to apply music competencies in teaching situations, and to integrate music instruction into the total process of education. (Attitude) SPECIFIC SLO Ability to teach music at various levels to different age groups and in a variety of classroom and ensemble settings in ways that develop knowledge of how music works syntactically as a communication medium and developmentally as an agent of civilization. This set of abilities includes effective classroom rehearsal management. (Skill) An understanding of child growth and development and an understanding of principles of learning as they relate to music. (Knowledge) The ability to assess aptitudes, experiential backgrounds, orientations of individuals and groups of students, and the nature of subject matter, and to plan educational programs to meet assessed needs. (Skill) Knowledge of current methods, materials, and repertories available in various fields and levels of music education appropriate to the teaching specialization. (Knowledge) The ability to accept, amend, or reject methods and materials based on personal assessment of specific teaching situations. (Skill and Attitude) An understanding of evaluative techniques and ability to apply them in assessing both the musical progress of students and the objectives and procedures of the curriculum.
