This is an informal space where we meet with EAFIT faculty and professional geologists to discuss geologic research topics. Field Trips 1) Marmato (May 22) 13 Undergraduate students from EAFIT University including SEG members visited Marmato Project from Gran Colombia Gold. Marmato is located 80 km south of 3

Medellin, in the Middle Cauca Belt. Mineralization in the district is interpreted as an epithermal low sulphidation Au-Ag ore, with reserves of up to 15,9 million Oz Au gold (Tassinari, 2007). Our group received an excellent tour led by Alesandro Cecchi, director of exploration. We received an introductory presentation and we were taken underground to explore several levels in the mine, where we observed the regional rocks associated with the mineralization, and also the distensional veins, stockwork and brecciated zones of the system. We also received a tour outside of the mine, to observe the crushing processes of the rock and the extractive processes of the ore. EAFIT Chapter in Marmato Project 4

California Vetas California-Vetas Mining District is located at 35 km NE of Bucaramanga, in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia within the Santander Massif, with inferred reserves of 20 Millions Oz Au gold, in a high sulphidation system (Mantilla, 2013). Prof Mantilla took us to the field and showed us some of his observation about geology, mineralization and different alteration types in the districts. He shared some of the geochemistry analysis and geochronology data to have a general background of the geological process involved and associated with the mineralization. 5

Short Courses and Guest Lecturers 1) Robert Shaw (April 10) Phanerozoic magmatism in Colombia and related gold deposits. Dr. Robert Shaw gave a talk to EAFIT chapter student in Medellin. He presented some of the tectonic reconstructions of Magmatic arcs in Colombia, relating these to all the gold deposits discovered. He also discussed about the actual situation in the mining industry and the political situation that is affecting to the economy in Colombia. 2) Thomas Bissig (July 25) Magmatism and Tectonic related to Hydrothermal Magmatic systems Cu-Au Porphyries. Fluid Evolution, mineralization and alteration characteristics. Dr. Thomas Bissig gave two lectures to EAFIT chapter students, EAFIT faculty and UnalMed students in Medellin. The first talk was an introduction of hydrothermal magmatic systems, magmatism and tectonic involved. The second talk was about Cu-Au porphyries: Fluid Evolution, mineralization and alteration characteristics. 3) Hildebrando Leal Mejia (July 25) Magmatism and Gold Metallogenesis in Colombian Andes. Dr. Hildebrando Leal Mejia presented his PhD work to EAFIT chapter students, EAFIT faculty and UnalMed students in Medellin. He presented data related to the characterization of mineralization in the Colombian Andes, in a regional tectonomagmatic setting, with the objective to find the different metallogenic events. He showed some of the petrochemistry and geochronological data. 7
