General objective of the program: 1/1 To produce competent clinicians knowing the basic background of leading causes of Infectious and hepatogasterointestinal diseases in Egyptian patients. 1/2 They will have the ability to asses, select and apply appropriate techniques to reach the proper diagnosis. 1/3 Our trainee will be able to honestly and safely manage common infectious and hepatogastrointestinal diseases as well as urgent cases, screen patients for early diagnosis of complications, and take personal responsibility for their decisions. 1/4 To produce clinicians applying the national and international standards of evidence based medicine in infections and endemic hepatogastroenterology. 2. lntended Learning Outcomes from the program: 2/ 1 Knowledge and understanding: By the end of this course, all the postgraduate students will acquire knowledge to: 1

A. Define the main disease categories that may affect the hepatobiliary system and GIT as well as the mechanisms underlying these disorders. B. Define and discuss the main infectious disease categories that may affect the body as well as the basic mechanisms underlying these diseases. C. Describe the immune system functions in the context of pathogenesis of diseases and host immune response. D. Identify the principles behind the modern cellular and molecular techniques available to the immunologist studying the immune resistance to infection. E. Describe the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, nutrition and pharmacology relevant to the hepatogastroenterology and infectious diseases. F. Describe the immunopathogenesis, manifestations and causes of different hepatogastrointestinal and infectious diseases. G. Recognize the value of each diagnostic tool including laboratory, endoscopy and abdominal ultrasonography, their limitations and complications. H. Describe the guidelines for the management of hepatogastrointestinal and infectious diseases. I. Define the principles of evidence based medicine and their application to the hepatogastroenterology and infectious diseases. J. Define the indications, contraindications, dosage and complications of drugs used for infections and endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases. 2/2 Intellectual Skills: 1 Differentiate between the different parasitic, viral, bacterial, and fungal infections that can infect patients as well as those causing endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases. 2 Correlate between the clinical presentation of various infectious and endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases and human physiology, cell biology, pathology and immune response. 3 Interpret clinical symptoms and signs of infectious and endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases properly. 4 Select the required investigations to reach a proper diagnosis. 5 Interpret laboratory, endoscopic, abdominal ultrasonography, and 2

other imaging techniques results for the diagnosis of endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases as well as infectious diseases.. 6 Plan a proper management of endemic hepatogastrointestinal and infectious diseases. 7. Plan a proper management of different emergencies as haematemesis, hepatic encephalopathy, fevers...etc. 2/3 Skills: 2/3/1 Professional and Practical Skills: By the end of the course the postgraduate student will be able to: 1. Collect data properly from history and clinical examination to aid him in the differentiation between different infectious diseases. 2. Use laboratory, endoscopic and radiological examination suitable for different infectious, hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases. 4. Perform clinical and interventional skills for diagnosis and management of infectious and endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases correctly and safely under observation according to a check list. 6. Perform disinfection techniques properly. 7. Formulate a proper therapeutic strategy for common infectious and hepatogastrointestinal diseases. 8. Manage emergencies and common infectious and hepatogastrointestinal diseases properly. 9. Perform basic abdominal ultrasonography and diagnostic upper GIT endoscopy for diagnosis and management of infectious and endemic hepatogastrointestinal diseases correctly and safely under observation according to a check list. 2/3/2 General Skills: By the end of the course the postgraduate student will be able to: 1. Communicate in an ethical manner with patients. 2. Involve the patients in understanding their health problem, the complications of their problems and in decision making for their management. 3

Adopt all aspects of safe diagnostic endoscopy and interventional ultrasonography. 9. The students will have the lectures from 10.00 am-12.00 pm in the lecture hall in the 1st floor of El-Hussein university hospital, Tropical medicine department on Sundays and Wednesdays. Has spent postgraduate one year clinical training program as a House officer in educational or governmental hospitals or its equivalent for completion the bachelor degree. Got the license of medical profession practice from the medical syndicate. Hold a master degree in Tropical medicine with at least rating Good from one University of the Arab Republic of Egypt or equivalent degree from another scientific institute recognized from Al-Azhar University.
