Introduction At DBS students in Year 10 and 11 follow the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Syllabi. Many IGCSEs have a distinct international element. Specialists have developed subject content to allow teachers to base their work on their own region, to make the content more relevant to the students. These courses provide a curriculum and method of assessment appropriate for a wide ability range. It is designed as a two-year curriculum programme leading to a certificate which is internationally recognised. DBS is registered and approved by the Edexcel Examination Board. The Edexcel Examination IGCSE is a qualification that embraces the best practice of GCSE. It provides students with an international perspective to their studies. It provides 100% Examination options for all subjects. GCSE offers students coursework and examinations. Website: www.edexcel.org.uk/

If you are planning to go on to the IB Diploma in Year 12 it is COMPULSORY to take a language. You may only choose one language. If you opt for a language you must have studied it previously. You are allowed to choose only one Design and Technology option

Core Subjects English Language A Course Code: 4EA0 Outline: In the English Language course students will study a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, examining how writers construct texts as well as extracting information for their writing tasks. Writing elements include: Imaginative and creative writing Personal writing Students will be asked to write in a variety of ways and for different purposes, ranging from descriptive to informative, persuasive and argumentative writing. Speaking and Listening: Students will be asked to use appropriate language in a variety of situations, including personal anecdotes, speechmaking and debating. Students will develop an awareness of how language changes depending on situations in both speech and writing. Assessment: There are three sections for study in English Language: Reading Writing Poetry Coursework (optional) Students study for either 100% final examination or 70% written examination and 30% coursework. The teacher will decide which assessment option is most appropriate for the students. There is only a single tier of entry for English Language.

English Literature Course Code: 4ET0 Selection: English Literature will be studied in conjunction with English Language and will be offered to selected students. Students who study both English Language and English Literature will be awarded two IGCSE awards. Outline: The Edexcel IGCSE in English Literature enables students to: engage with and develop the ability to read, understand and respond to a wide range of literary texts from around the world. develop an appreciation of the ways in which authors achieve their literary effects and to develop the skills needed for literary study. explore, through literature, the cultures of their own and other societies. find enjoyment in reading literature and understand its influence on individuals and societies. Assessment: There are three sections for study and assessment in English Literature: Drama An Inspector Calls Prose Of Mice and Men by J.B Priestly Poetry IGCSE Poetry Anthology Students study for either 100% final examination or 70% written examination and 30% coursework. The teacher will decide which assessment option is most appropriate for the students. There is only a single tier of entry for English Literature. English as a Second Language The IGCSE in English as a Second Language is designed primarily as a qualification for candidates who are either obtaining their secondary education in English or studying English in order to enhance their future prospects. This qualification tests English language competence through tasks based on authentic texts. Two examination papers test reading, writing and listening skills. This subject may be chosen after consultation with you English teacher.

Science (Double Award) Course Code: 4SC0 Key features and benefits: Single tier - all students sit the same examination. Students are awarded two identical IGCSE grades, reflecting the study of the prescribed amount of subject content. It takes approximately two-thirds of the subject content of each of the Edexcel IGCSE single sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), and combines them into an IGCSE in Science (Double Award). It is designed to be an interesting and inspiring modern specification. The course offers opportunity for students to experience science within the context of their general education. In terms of progression, the design of the course provides a base to further study in Biology, Chemistry and Physics Key subject aims The Science (Double Award) enables students to: acquire a systematic body of scientific knowledge and facts, and an understanding of scientific concepts, principles, themes and patterns appreciate the practical nature of science, acquiring experimental skills based on correct and safe laboratory techniques appreciate the importance of accurate experimental work to scientific method and reporting form hypotheses and design experiments to test them appreciate the significance of science in wider personal, social, environmental, economic and technological contexts, and consider ethical issues prepare for more advanced courses in each of the three scientific disciplines which comprise this specification. Assessment Objectives This specification requires that all students demonstrate the following Assessment Objectives in the context of the content and skills prescribed. AO1: Knowledge and understanding AO2: Application of knowledge and understanding, analysis and evaluation AO3: Experimental and investigative skills

Mathematics A Course code: 4MA0 Key subject aims The Edexcel IGCSE in Mathematics (Specification A) qualification enables students to: develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques. acquire a foundation of mathematical skills for further study in the subject or related areas. enjoy using and applying mathematical techniques and concepts, and become confident to use mathematics to solve problems. appreciate the importance of mathematics in society, employment and study. Key features and benefits of the specification The Edexcel IGCSE in Mathematics (Specification A) has been developed to focus on: Tiers of entry that allow students to be entered for the appropriate level. Questions designed to be accessible to students of all abilities within that tier. Papers that are balanced for topics and difficulty. Standards that are equivalent to Edexcel s UK GCSE in Mathematics. A full range of teacher support. A solid basis for students wishing to progress to Edexcel AS and Advanced GCE Level, or equivalent qualifications. Assessment summary Papers 1F, 2F, 3H and 4H are externally assessed through examination papers each lasting two hours. Foundation Tier (Papers 1F and 2F) Paper code: 4MA0/1F and 4MA0/2F Two written papers. Each paper is assessed through a two-hour examination set and marked by Edexcel. The total number of marks for each paper is 100. Each paper weighted at 50% of the qualification, targeted at grades C G. Higher Tier (Papers 3H and 4H) Paper code: 4MA0/3H and 4MA0/4H Two written papers. Each paper is assessed through a two-hour examination set and marked by Edexcel. Each paper weighted at 50% of the qualification, targeted at grades A* D.

Optional Subjects Modern Foreign Languages French Course Code: 4FR0 Outline: The Edexcel IGCSE in French enables students to: develop understanding and use of the spoken and written forms of the French language, in a range of familiar and practical contexts, and for a variety of purposes develop the ability to communicate effectively in the target language through both the spoken and written word, using a range of vocabulary and structures develop a knowledge and understanding of the target language grammar and its practical application develop a knowledge and understanding of countries and communities where French is spoken develop positive attitudes towards modern foreign language learning and acquire a suitable foundation for further study in the target language. Assessment: In all papers, all questions will be in French.. Paper 1: Listening. Paper 2: Reading and writing. Paper 3: Speaking test.

Spanish Course Code: 4SP0 Outline: The Edexcel IGCSE in Spanish enables students to: develop understanding and use of the spoken and written forms of the Spanish language, in a range of familiar and practical contexts, and for a variety of purposes develop the ability to communicate effectively in the target language through both the spoken and written word, using a range of vocabulary and structures develop a knowledge and understanding of the target language grammar and its practical application develop a knowledge and understanding of countries and communities where Spanish is spoken develop positive attitudes towards modern foreign language learning and acquire a suitable foundation for further study in the target language. Assessment: In all papers, all questions will be in Spanish. Paper 1: Listening. Paper 2: Reading and writing. Paper 3: Speaking test.

Arabic as a First Language Course Code: 4AR0 Outline: The Arabic as a First Language course is divided into three sections: Reading: read a range of texts with understanding of explicit meaning and attitudes. follow an argument distinguishing between fact and opinion. Extract, summarise and present appropriately relevant information from text. Writing: Communicate in writing clearly and imaginatively, using and adapting forms for different readers and purposes. Organise their writing into clear and coherent sentences and whole text. Use accurate spelling, and observe the conventions of punctuation. Grammatical usage: Show an understanding of grammatical topics: cases, vocalisation, vocabulary choices and syntax. Assessment: Assessment is through two compulsory papers. All candidates are required to take both components, paper 1 and paper 2. Both papers target grades A*-G Weighting: The weighting for each section is: Comprehension 70% Continuous Prose 30% The entire course is conducted in Arabic and is only provided for students who are first language speakers of Arabic.

Arabic as a Second Language Course code:2ar01 GCSE Arabic course is divided in to four sections: Listening and understanding in Arabic: - Students should become accustomed to hearing Arabic language in a range of styles or different registers and in a variety of contexts, as appropriate to their age and level of understanding. Speaking in Arabic: Students are required to develop oral communication skills in different settings and for different purposes related to one (or both) of the following themes: - media, travel and culture - sport, leisure and work. Reading and Understanding in Arabic: Students should be presented with Arabic language in a range of styles or registers and in a variety of different contexts as appropriate to their age and level of understanding. In the question paper, students will encounter text in different fonts and formats, for example, short printed messages, advertisements and email messages. Writing in Arabic: Students need to demonstrate that they can apply their knowledge and understanding of Arabic, including grammar, to write effectively in Arabic for different purposes and in different contexts. Assessment - Picture based discussion (or presentations) with follow-up questions. General conversation. -Students will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of a number of short texts. - The writing unit is externally assessed through an examination paper consisting of two tasks.

Humanities and ICT History Course Code: 4HI0 The Edexcel IGCSE course in History gives students opportunities to: acquire knowledge and understanding of selected periods and/or aspects of history, explore the significance of historical events, people, changes and issues use historical sources critically, in their context, recording significant information and reaching conclusions organise and communicate their knowledge and understanding of history draw conclusions and make historical judgments These are skills that are valued by employers Topics: Section A: A Divided Union: Civil Rights in the USA Superpower Relations, 1945-62 Section B: The Russian Revolution (source based) Section C: Changes in Medicine 1845-1945 Assessment: Students will be examined by a single 2 ½ hour paper with three sections. Students must study two themes from Section A, one depth Study from Section B which focuses on sources and one study in change from Section C. There is no tiering or coursework in this assessment structure. Conclusion Students who enjoy reading, debating and discussion and have an interest in current affairs and world politics will find this course a rewarding one. People who have studied History at university often go on to become lawyers, accountants, journalists, teachers, civil servants, academics, bankers, librarians and lots of other things.

Geography Course Code: 4GEO The Edexcel IGCSE in Geography enables students to: actively engage in the process of geography to develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds develop their understanding of geographical concepts and appreciate their relevance to our changing world develop a framework of spatial awareness to appreciate the importance of the location of places and environments from local to global appreciate the cultural similarities and differences around the world and appreciate the significance of values and attitudes to the development and resolution of issues develop their responsibilities as global citizens and recognise that all can contribute to a sustainable future develop their learning through virtual and out-of-classroom fieldwork Topics: There are five topics to study: Section A River environments Hazardous environments Section B Ecosystems and Rural Environments Urban Environments Section C Globalisation and migration Examination: Students will sit a 2 hour and 45 minute examination paper. This will be externally marked and graded. Students will answer five questions, one on each of the above topics, worth 30 marks per question. Students who have a keen interest in the dynamically changing world around them will be interested in IGCSE Geography. It has an international dimension which is relevant for our students and will help to broaden their global perspective. It provides a solid academic basis for progression to higher qualifications such as IB Diploma and GCE Advanced qualification.

Business Studies Course Code: 4FA0 Outline: Business Studies at IGCSE takes a detailed and practical look at the business world It examines the external environment of a business, business behaviour, business structure and organisation, people in business Assessment: Candidates can be entered at either Foundation or Higher Tiers. There are 5 content areas: Business activity and the changing environment Human Resources Accounting and Finance Marketing Production Weighting: Grades will be awarded on: 100% Examination

Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Course Code: 4IT0/01/02 Outline: The Edexcel IGCSE in ICT is designed as a two-year course. It aims to encourage the exploration and study of ICT in a variety of contexts: home, community, business, industry, recreation and education. In any given situation students will have the opportunity to acquire competence, ability and critical skills through the implementation, use and evaluation of a range of ICT systems. Students can develop their interests in, enjoyment of and critical reflections on ICT as an integral part of modern society. Key subject aims The Edexcel IGCSE in ICT enables students to: Acquire and apply ICT skills, knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts. Develop ICT-based solutions to address challenges and solve problems. Develop an understanding of ICT systems. Develop an understanding and awareness of current and emerging technologies. Develop an awareness of the legal, social, ethical and environmental consequences of the use of ICT systems for individuals, organisations and society. Recognise potential risks when using ICT and develop safe, secure and responsible practice. Assessment: 100% examination single assessment route allowing all students to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and application of ICT. Examination is both written and practical. Paper 1 is externally assessed through a written one-hour and 30-minute examination paper. Multiple choice and short-answer questions. The total number of marks available is 100. Weighted at 50%. Paper 2 is externally assessed through a three-hour practical examination paper (including printing time). The total number of marks available is 100. Weighted at 50%.

The Arts, Design Technology and PE Art and Design (Fine Arts) Course Code: 4FA0 Outline: This course is designed to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. It provides opportunities for students to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design, and to explore local traditions and inspirations. Students will understand the codes and conventions of art, craft and design and the context in which they operate. Assessment: Candidates will be assessed on their ability to: Record observations, experiences and ideas which are appropriate to intentions. Analyse and evaluate images, objects and artifacts, making informed connections to other work. Develop and explore ideas using a variety of media and processes. Review and define ideas, modifying work as it progresses, before presenting a coherent personal response. Grades will be awarded for 100% Practical Examination.

Design Technology: Resistant Materials Course code: 5RM02 The course is concerned with designing and making, using various materials that include wood, metal, plastics and modern smart materials. Throughout the two years of the course candidates will be expected to solve real design problems through developed knowledge, understanding and making skills. Year 10: The first year delivers various projects that develop all the required skills. Wooden storage, plastic frame and metal accessory projects are covered respectively each term. Related knowledge and understanding theory is delivered alongside each project to prepare the pupils for their DT exam at the end of that academic year. Year 11: The final year combines all the knowledge, understanding and making skills from the previous year into one final project. The project brief is chosen by each individual pupil and they will study it independently to produce a design folder which includes; research, design, development, making and evaluation work. Candidates will have the opportunity to use a variety of tools and equipment available in both the DT workshop and suite. This includes CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacture) using the laser cutter and vinyl cutter as well as traditional processes and use various ICT design programs. Assessment The written examination will consist of one paper which tests knowledge and understanding of resistant materials technology theory. Pupils will be tested at the end of Year 10 and it will count towards 40% of their final grade. The remaining 60% is made from a combination of folder work and making in the final year project. Criteria Apart from a keen interest and enjoyment in the subject each pupil will need to seriously consider if they have the attributes to be successful in Year 10 RM. You will need to be organised with practical work, note taking and coursework to meet regular deadlines. Independence is also required to undertake projects and complete various problem solving tasks. Most importantly you need to ensure you can work safely and responsibly around others in the workshop. Future career paths Engineering, Product Design, Built Environment, Sustainable Design, Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing, Carpentry and Mechanics.

Music (GCSE) Course Code: 2MU01 This course is split into 3 main areas: Performing Composing Listening and appraising Areas of Study: Western classical music 1600-1899 Music in the 20 th Century Popular music in context World Music Examination and Weighting: Performing and Composing are both internally assessed. Performing is worth 30% of the total mark Composing is worth 30% of the total mark Listening and Appraising is a 1 hour 30 minute examination This is externally assessed and is worth 40% of the total mark Important Note: Students must have a strong knowledge of music language and a willingness to rehearse after school. The ability to play a musical instrument is an important recommendation for this course.

Physical Education Course Code 1827 Students will develop their personal practical ability, knowledge and understanding of tactics, strategies and rules, and study the theoretical side of the subject. Students will spend 2 x 45 minutes in practical activities, and 2 x 45 minutes working on developing their knowledge and understanding of the theory aspects. The course has the following weightings; Practical-60% (12% coursework based) Theory-40% (three sections covered: Exercise and Training, Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment, and Applied Anatomy and Physiology). Students will be expected to complete homework to support their theory work and where appropriate practical activities. Please be aware that this is not a course that allows students to play recreationally their favourite sports for two years and that the theoretical element of the course is closely related to Biology.
