Archdiocese of Louisville Holy Doors

Holy Door Pilgrimage The Jubilee Year of Mercy began on December 8, 2015 and will end on the Feast of Christ the King. During Jubilee Years, Holy Doors are used as a symbol and ritual expression of conversion in and through Jesus Christ. Individuals are invited to pass through the door in order to leave the past behind and cross the threshold from sin to grace and darkness to light. This passport was prepared to help you and your family to venture on a pilgrimage to each of the twenty Holy Doors of the Archdiocese of Louisville. Information about Mass and Confession times as well as location and hours of each of the Holy Doors is included. Many parishes have Holy Cards located inside their Holy Door. There is a place on each page to attach the card and record the date of your visit. Please note that Mass and confession times change, so it is best always to double-check the times before you visit if you with to participate.

Holy Doors and Plenary Indulgences Like all previous Jubilees, the Jubilee Year of Mercy features a very special plenary indulgence (the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sin). To receive the Jubilee Year indulgence, you must fulfill the usual conditions, (specified below) and perform the indulgence act: passing through a designated Holy Door during the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. You may receive the plenary indulgence yourself or offer it for a person in purgatory. Here are the normal conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence: It is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; Have sacramentally confessed their sins; Receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence.
