Judge Leslie Abernathy-Maddox serves as one of two Forsyth County State Court Judges. Judge Abernathy was elected to three terms as the solicitor-general of Forsyth County before being appointed State Court Judge by Governor Deal in December 2012. She is a member of the board of directors of CASA of Forsyth County and the Children s Center for Hope and Healing, and she is the former vice chairperson for the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia. Abernathy earned her bachelor s degree from North Georgia College and State University and her law degree from John Marshall Law School. Jennifer Greene Ammons is currently employed as the General Counsel at the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). She held the same position at the DDS predecessor agency, the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety, where she worked from October 2001 through June 2005. From July 1994 through September 2001, Ms. Ammons was an assistant district attorney in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit primarily assigned to the Newton County District Attorney s Office in Covington, Georgia. Ms. Ammons graduated with honors from the University of Georgia in 1991 with a degree in criminal justice studies. She received her juris doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1994. Ms. Ammons speaks extensively on the subject of driver s license law and coordinates the annual CLE seminar on that topic. In 2010 she was awarded the Third Millennium Medallion Award by the Institute for Continuing Judicial Education. She was also recognized by Georgia Trend magazine as one of the Legal Elite in Governmental Affairs. Judge Nancy Bills graduated Cum Laude with a BA Degree from UGA and then Cum Laude from Law School at UGA. After graduation from law school in 1989, she came to Rockdale Co. and began work as Assistant District Attorney. In 1996, became the Chief Asst. District Atty and worked in the District Attorney s Office as an Asst DA for over ten years. Judge Bills went into private legal practice for five years and handled primarily criminal defense and domestic cases. Until running for State Court in July 2004. Elected to the State Court Bench in January 2005, Judge Bills was re-elected in November 2012 to another four- year term. She began the Rockdale County DUI Court in 2006. George Creal is a trial lawyer with over 18 years of experience. George began his legal career working as a staff attorney to a Georgia Superior Court Judge, a Federal District Court Judge, and County Attorney. He spent a several years as an Insurance Defense lawyer representing Insurance Companies in all areas of litigation including personal injury, catastrophic injury and government entity defense in insured civil rights cases. He started his own practice in 1996 and since then has secured over 100 not guilty verdicts in criminal and DUI jury trials. He has tried several week long employment discrimination lawsuits to juries in Federal Court and tried scores of jury trials in State and Superior Court securing millions of dollars of settlements and judgments for his clients in personal injury, workers compensation, civil rights, employment discrimination and business lawsuits. In recent years his practice has focused more on DUI jury trials. His reputation in the courtrooms of Georgia is legendary and is often contacted by sheriff s deputies, judges and prosecutors when they need legal help for friends and family. They don t call him the Real Deal George Creal for nothing.
Jim Duncan is the managing owner of Duncan Law Firm LLC in Augusta, Georgia. In addition to his law degree, he has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in business administration. He has been practicing since 1987, and he now limits himself to DUI defense. He is a member of the National College for DUI Defense and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, plus he is a Georgia CLE faculty member. He has cross examined the GBI s expert on the Intoxilizer 5000 numerous times, and he has obtained not guilty verdicts in cases with high readings on the Intox 5000. Mr. Duncan s thorough and effective cross examination of the State s expert usually turns the State s expert into a plus when he is defending his DUI clients at jury trials. Peter Gerstenzang is the senior partner in the Albany firm of Gerstenzang, O Hern, Hickey, Sills & Gerstenzang where he focuses on Criminal Defense with an emphasis on DWI cases and Vehicular Crimes. He commenced his legal career as a prosecutor for the United States Army in the Republic of Vietnam. From 1972 to 1975, he was an Assistant District Attorney for the County of Albany. Certified as a breath test operator, he taught at the New York State Police Academy in their Breath Test Training Program for 12 years. Mr. Gerstenzang is Board Certified by the National College for DUI Defense ( NCDD ), where he serves as Assistant Dean. The NCDD is the only organization accredited by the American Bar Association to certify attorneys as specialists in DUI law.* His book, Handling the DWI Case in New York, published by West Group, is considered a standard reference in the field of Driving While Intoxicated cases. Peter Gerstenzang is a regular lecturer for the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the New York State Magistrates Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the New York State Defenders Association. In addition, he lectures for numerous County Bar and Magistrates Associations, public defense organizations and the New York State Court Clerks Association. Frank Gomez is a DUI defense attorney at the law offices of Head, Thomas, Webb and Willis in Sandy Springs, Georgia. He has prior experience as a DUI prosecutor in the City of Atlanta and Cobb County court systems. Frank did his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia and received his law degree from the College of Law at Georgia State University. For the past seven years, Frank has co-chaired and spoken at a number of statewide DUI defense seminars sponsored by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education in Georgia and the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Along with William C. Bubba Head, Frank is the co-author on the Georgia DUI Trial Practice Manual published by West, a Thomson Reuters company. Frank was recently recognized as the 2013 DUI lawyer of the Year by the Georgia Defense of Drinking Drivers (DODD) Group. Mike Hawkins of Hawkins Law Group in Atlanta, Georgia is a frequent lecturer on DUI issues in Georgia and across the nation. Mr. Hawkins holds a B.A. from the University of Alabama in 1989 and a J.D. from Emory University in 1992. Mr. Hawkins served as a prosecutor in metro Atlanta for 5 years before entering private practice. Mr. Hawkins remains the youngest lawyer in the United States recognized by the American Bar Association as Board Certified in DUI Defense by the National College for DUI Defense. In 2008, he was elected to the Board of Regents for the NCDD. He serves as Vice-Chairman of the DUI Committee for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and served locally as President of the DeKalb Bar Association.
Georgia DUI Attorney Richard Lawson has dedicated his entire career to DUI Law. Ron Lloyd has more than 23 years of experience investigating impaired driving cases, with the majority of that time spent as a State Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol. During his time as a State Trooper, he made nearly 1000 DUI arrests and was a member of the Alpha Team DUI Task Force that was based out of Metro Atlanta. He served as the GSP Training Coordinator for DUI Detection and SFST training program and was responsible for training all State Troopers in that field of instruction. He was also a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE)/SFST Instructor and served as a member of the Georgia Technical Advisory Panel (TAP Committee), which was responsible for regulating and monitoring the DRE training program in Georgia. He also served as the DRE Agency Coordinator for the State Patrol. He has trained hundreds of professionals and organizations on DUI related issues for the Georgia Police Academy, The Prosecuting Attorney s Council of Georgia, The Georgia Safety Management System, The GBI Crime Lab, Municipal Court Judges from Georgia at the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada at Reno, Criminal Defense Attorneys at Harvard Law School, as well as many others. Mr. Lloyd now serves as a private Consultant, Expert Witness and Trainer on DUI related issues and has been retained on over 5000 alcohol related cases, over the last 10 years. Robert Parker McFarland, Jr. earned his J.D. in 2001 after attending Mississippi College School of Law and the University of Georgia. Parker was in the first ever attorney class to receive training on the new Intoxilyzer 9000, is a NHTSA/IACP Standardized Field Sobriety Testing instructor, and has completed Drugs that Impair Driving and the Drug Recognition Expert Overview Course. He is currently Vice President of GACDL, Past President of both the Forsyth County Criminal Defense Bar and Forsyth County Bar Association, and a member of NCDD and GTLA. Parker has litigated 50 jury and bench trials, and 15 appeals, successfully reversing sentences and convictions in DUI, child molestation, aggravated assault, and drug cases. In 2005, Parker convinced the Georgia Supreme Court to invalidated the obscene telephone calls statute on first amendment grounds. He has litigated hundreds of contested motion hearings and ALS hearings, many of which were roadblock cases, and has been successful in convincing trial courts to suppress the evidence of invalid roadblocks, HGN and other field sobriety tests which were conducted improperly, refusals, and chemical test results. Anthony D. Palacios is a nationally renowned SFST/DRE expert and consultant for Impaired Driving Specialists, LLC based in. Anthony has approximately 17 years of experience investigating DUI alcohol and DUI drug cases and is the former SFST State Coordinator for the State of Georgia as well as a former Impaired Driving Staff Instructor for the Georgia Police Academy. Allen Trapp of Carrollton, Georgia, currently serves as the Georgia Delegate to the National College for DUI Defense and was a vice president of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2009 to 2012. He has received advanced training in gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, pharmacology, and drug trial strategies. He is frequently called upon to make presentations on subjects such as jury selection, cross examination techniques, pharmacology concepts in the classroom, and Fourth Amendment case law at seminars both in Georgia and in states as far flung as Massachusetts, Texas, Wyoming, Florida, Ohio, West Virginia, Louisiana and Arizona.
