FEATURES Your RadioShack 5-Hour/8-Hour AA/AAA Ni- Cd/Ni-MH Battery Charger charges nickelcadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries in about 5 hours or nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH) batteries in about 8 hours. You can charge two or four AA or AAA batteries of the same type and capacity. Or you can charge one 9V battery with the charger s 9-volt battery terminals. Charging a 9V battery takes about 9 hours. Your charger s features include: Safety Timer Protection automatically stops charging AA or AAA batteries after the charging timer runs out. 2 2000, 1999 RadioShack Corporation. All Rights Reserved. RadioShack is a registered trademark used by RadioShack Corporation.

Battery Capacity Switch lets you select the capacity (standard or high-capacity) of the batteries you are charging. Reverse Polarity Protection protects the charger and batteries if you incorrectly install batteries. Charging/Discharging Indicators the red indicators show that batteries are charging and the green indicator shows that batteries are discharging. Ni-Cd/Ni-MH Switch lets you select the battery type you are charging. Discharge Button press to activate the conditioner that discharges the batteries. The charger automatically begins charging the batteries once it has completely discharged them. 3

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS This manual contains important safety and operating instructions for your charger. Before you use the battery charger, read all instructions and cautionary markings on the charger, the batteries to be charged, and the products that use the batteries. Warning: To reduce the risk of injury, charge only Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries with this charger. Other types of batteries might burst, causing personal injury and damage. Safety Instructions 4 Do not expose the charger to rain or excessive moisture. Any attachments not intended for use with this battery charger can result in a

risk of fire, electric shock, or personal injury. Never operate the charger if it has received a sharp blow, or been dropped or damaged in any way. Take it to your local RadioShack store for service. Do not disassemble the charger. Have it serviced or repaired by qualified RadioShack service personnel only. Incorrect assembly can result in a risk of electric shock or fire. To reduce the risk of electric shock, unplug the charger from the outlet before routine maintenance or cleaning. Do not use an extension cord. Its use could result in fire or electric shock. If the AC plug does not fit in the AC outlet, have a qualified technician install the proper outlet. Improper connection can result in an electric shock. 5

Never use the charger as a DC power source for any electrical equipment. OPERATION General Charging Guidelines 6 Completely discharge Ni-Cd batteries before you charge them. Repeated partial discharging and recharging can shorten their useful life. This does not apply to Ni-MH batteries. It is normal for batteries to become warm while charging. Batteries in the charger at the same time must be of the same type (Ni-Cd or Ni- MH) and capacity (standard or highcapacity). The charger has two channels. Both the left and right channels have two positions for AAA and two positions for AA batter-

ies. Each channel also has its own red CHARGE indicator that lights when batteries in that channel are charging. You cannot discharge/charge one 9V battery and AA/AAA batteries at the same time. However, you can discharge/ charge a pair of AA batteries in one channel and a pair of AAA batteries of the same type and capacity in the other channel at the same time. You cannot discharge/charge only one AA or AAA battery in each battery channel. You must always discharge/charge a pair of batteries of the same size, type, and capacity in one channel if the other channel is empty. Cautions: Never put a discharged battery and a charged battery in the same channel. Do not attempt to charge any other 7

size or type battery than those for which this charger was designed. Charge batteries where the ambient temperature is between 32 and 113 F (0 and 45 C). If charging conditions are too cold, batteries do not fully charge. If charging conditions are too warm, the batteries can permanently lose their rechargeable properties. Discharging/Charging Batteries Follow these steps to discharge and then charge the batteries: 1. To open the cover, grasp the tabs on both sides of the charger and lift up the cover. 8 2. Place two AA or two AAA batteries in the left channel according to the polarity symbols (+ and ) marked inside the battery compartment. If you have more than

two batteries to be discharged/charged at a time, place two AA or two AAA batteries in the right channel next. AAA Batteries 9V Terminals AA Batteries To charge a 9V battery, place it in the 9V channel. Slide the battery's connectors onto the terminals on the compartment s right side. Caution: Before connecting the charger to AC power, be sure all batteries are correctly installed according to polarity. Incorrectly installed batteries (polarity reversed) will not charge and can be damaged. 9

3. Set the Ni-Cd/Ni-MH and STANDARD/HI- CAP switches to match the type and capacity of the batteries you are discharging/charging. (See Charging Capacities on Page 13.) DISCHARGE Button STANDARD/ HI-CAP Switch Ni-Cd/Ni-MH Switch 4. Plug the charger into a standard AC outlet. 5. Press DISCHARGE to discharge batteries. The green indicator lights while the charger discharges the batteries. When the battery voltage drops to 0.9V, the dis- 10

charge cycle stops and the green indicator turns off. Then, the charger immediately begins the charge cycle and the appropriate red indicator(s) light(s). For example, if you only have batteries in the left channel, only the left CHARGE indicator lights. Note: The charger cannot discharge 9V batteries. If the indicators do not light, try one or more of the following suggestions. Be sure batteries are correctly installed. Remove the batteries and clean the batteries' and charger's contacts with a pencil eraser. One or more batteries might be defective. Replace any defective batteries. 6. When AA/AAA batteries are fully charged, the red indicator(s) turn(s) off. Unplug the 11

adapter from the AC outlet, then remove the batteries. Warning: To prevent damage to your charger and risk of shock, always unplug the charger from the AC outlet before you remove or replace the batteries. Notes: The 9V charging channel has no automatic turn-off feature. To avoid exceeding the capacity listed in Charging Capacities on Page 13, charge a 9V battery for 7 9 hours. A longer charging time could shorten the battery s useful life. 9V battery-charging does not require a specific setting for the Ni-Cd/Ni-MH and STANDARD/HI-CAP switches. 12
