How to Avoid Distracted Drivers / Keeping Safe Shifting Gears by Flyboy U.S. Air Force, (Retired) The Kantor Law Firm Personal Injury Motorcycle Accident Attorneys - Investigator Well Guy s another riding season is coming to a close and I ve seen quite a few motorcycle accidents again this season. Many of the accidents were caused by distracted drivers and as you may know the dashboard of any late-model car is loaded with electronic distractions. Add a smartphone-equipped driver virtually wired to family and friends and you ve got distracted driving: a seemingly unlimited array of digital gizmos vs. one very analog human attention span. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, In 2011, 4,612 motorcyclists were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes an increase of 2 percent from the 4,518 motorcyclists killed in 2010. There were 81,000 motorcyclists injured during 2011, a slight decrease from 82,000 in 2010, 5,474 people were killed on American roads in 2009 in accidents involving some form of distracted driving. Avoiding 5000-lb. SUVs on a 500/900-lb. motorcycle can make Main Street USA/WNY feel more like Baghdad or Kabul. So what can you do to stay out of the statistics? Keep right We all know how slick the center of a lane can be, especially at stop signs and red lights. Once you re moving, watch the drivers of oncoming cars. They wander: to their right, you re safe; to their left, you re dead. It all depends on which knob they re reaching for. Give them as wide a berth as possible by staying to the right side of a two-lane road. Beware the Multi-Lane Road They can come at you from any direction on a four- or six-lane superhighway. Avoid the super-hwy-slab whenever you can and take a whole lot of extra care when you can t. Motorcycles are more fun to drive on twisty two-lanes anyway. Be bright Okay, so your riding organization wouldn t have looked as cool wearing yellow jackets back in 1953. This is 2014. Anything that s bright and maybe even reflective increases the odds that a preoccupied driver s eyes will spot you in time to do the right thing. Be brighter Today s bikes have amazingly bright high-beams for daylight riding. It s important to be considerate too, especially at night. But if you can use them without blinding oncoming traffic, do it. Some cars will retaliate with their high beams, but at least they noticed you. Remember the last time you passed a Gold Wing at night? Some are lit up like Christmas trees yearround with all those extra lights. Gaudy? Maybe, but you see em, right? Think about adding an auxiliary LED up front or out back. They may not be cool, but they just might save your bacon. Avoid the T-bone Whether it s a car pulling out from the right or turning left across your bow, a bike T-boning a car has been a painfully classic accident scenario since the original Hurt Report came out 30 years ago. And what s the automobile driver s classic story for the cops? I never saw him. When approaching a vehicle that s perpendicular to your path, assume the driver doesn t see you. Assume he s cuing his ipod, she s texting her boyfriend or granddad is squinting at the GPS anything but looking out for you. This is the number 1 accident the kills or maims most bikers, Think big There s a car up ahead, pulling out of Denny s late at night. What does the driver see? Is it a Peterbilt full of anvils a mile away? A Kia Soul full of high-school kids a quarter-mile away? Or is it a Harley Street Glide one block away? They all look about the same to the average distracted driver. Assume that, given a chance, a Call Today! 716-604-8829 For Fast Free Estimates Jay Heferle, owner 10 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET Flyers Posters Signs Banners Tickets Postcards Business Cards Website Consulting 716-648-5478 cxpress@verizon.net www.cxiprinting.com 19 Buffalo Street Hamburg, NY 14075

Shifting Gears by Flyboy right-angled vehicle will pull out right in front of you. Your horn can t compete with 110 decibels of Lady Gaga. The eyes offer the quickest path to the brain. Flash your high-beam a few times, and then, if they still don t see you, leave it on. That ll get their attention. Distracted drivers are the newest threat to motorcyclists on the roads. They re dangerous enough to your loved ones in the family SUV. For all of us rolling around out there on two-wheelers, they present a simple choice. Be wary Please pay attention out there or become a statistic. Remember Fall is just around the corner so be aware of Fall hazardous motorcycle road conditions such as slippery wet leaves on the roadway, slick spots, and those pot holes then didn t get to during pot hole repair season. Remember the days are getting shorter and you will probably do a little extra night riding. Understanding your motorcycle, your body, and the environment will greatly increase your chances of a great ride in any weather. So enjoy your fall riding and be safe out there with all the distraction that are around you on the road. Always remember if for some reason you or someone you know have an accident trust the lawyers that ride The Kantor Law Firm. Too Soon? Did you ever hear a comedian tell a joke and the audience groans in disapproval even if it's actually funny? The comedian will come back with "Oh is it too soon?" There seems to be this unwritten rule about how long one must wait before they make an attempt at humor or tell a joke about someone that has died or something that is a clear tragedy. The recent death of Robin Williams will no doubt bear that out. I liked him in the movie The Final Cut. Some of his other stuff too. I couldn't take a lot of him when he got wound up as a guest on a talk show. He was clearly himself in those moments. It's sad he didn't have someone there that might have talked him through those last urges that he gave into. He might have still done it but could have at a later time after he did a farewell tour of people he loved or worked with. He could have kept his upcoming suicide a secret and just lived out a week or so doing the rounds and tie up some loose ends. Kind of a "Pre Ghost." Not such a crazy idea. It would be the same as facing a terminal disease only he gets to say when. Maybe he did just that for all we know. The press certainly did not bother to look into that possibility. The first thing I heard was the auto-erotica asphyxiation story. I don't really need to know that nor do I want to hear that. Can't somebody just kill themselves privately and have it listed as suicide? Don't describe the death scene or what he was wearing. I will say I'd much rather see someone take their own life than kill their whole family or co-workers as they do it. I wouldn't mind if they took an asshole with them, just somebody that everybody would love to see dead. "Hey Robin, as long as you're about to kill yourself, would you mind swinging by that church and whack the priest that molested all of those altar boys? Thanks! It a bit more than stopping to pick up milk but it's on the way." I'm sure you can think of someone, we all can. America has this sick fascination with celebrity, death and mostly dead celebrities. We get this crap shoveled at us by a juvenile press that seems to be the same people that ran the school newspaper. "If it bleeds, it leads" is the press motto. People love these quick exciting stories. Nobody has an attention span for real news anymore. I attribute that to MTV style music videos. They shortened Americans' attention span. I have a challenge/dare for you that proves what I'm saying. On the next music video you see, start counting 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi at the start of every scene that flashes on the screen. With each new scene start counting again. I can promise you that you won't reach 4 Mississippi. 1, 1 Miss, 1 Mississ maybe, rarely you'll hit 2. Try it. It's a fun party game. Anyhow on to Parallel Thinking, there are Mummies in town. You've seen the ads. This is probably the oldest running scary, freak show in the world. Any building that has science in the title can display corpses in various states of decay for people to gawk at. Why do we allow this? Money and there are no living relatives around to sue are the only answers I can come up with. People are looking at the 2,000 year old bodies. There are 1,000 years old bodies. Some are just several hundred years old. Some don't look all that old or that well preserved. So if that's the case why isn't there a post modern impressionist section? Or gangland slaying body? Or old guy died eating soup and nobody noticed for a year body? Recently there was the guy that brought his plasticized humans to the area. Now he knew how to display a body! Holy crap, talk about science fiction nightmare material. I am amazed that we get non-stop violence and gore on T.V. shows like Walking Dead on cable that depict such gruesome dead bodies that are still alive mind you and we have to settle for dehydrated, don't even stink mummies. Why not a morgue tour where the bodies are fresher? Is that too soon? Enjoy the Autumn rides, don't put it away too soon either. See you next year. Light Up Paint For Your Motorcycle Andy Zsinko is thinking he may have what it takes to disrupt the lighting industry. Why use incandescent, fluorescent or LED lighting when you can spray a thin paint on almost surface flat or curved apply an electric current to the coating and watch it glow as bright as any bulb? That s the concept behind Zsinko s startup company, Darkside Scientific, and the environmentally friendly coating he spent years developing called LumiLor. LumiLor is getting noticed. For instance, Progressive insurance has promoted LumiLor and Zsinko in videos and a full-page ad in Time magazine, showing the founder riding a lit-up LumiLorpainted motorcycle at night. World domination is next, Zsinko quipped from Darkside Scientific s offices and development space off West Smith Road. In reality, Zsinko as founder and chairman and his team are taking small steps to bring LumiLor to different markets while raising money. They also are tweaking the formula for the electroluminescent substance, which they say is the first paint of its kind that can be applied to any curved surface. Darkside right now is targeting what it calls aftermarket applications, things such as high-end custompainting of motor cycles and other motor vehicles. The LumiLor paint on Zsinko s motorcycle makes its gas tank look as though there is a light bulb inside shining out. But it is the paint doing the shining and it can flash on and off. Essentially, you can turn it on and off like a light, said Shawn Mastrian, Darkside s chief executive officer. Now we can paint any surface and make it into a light. It s a spray-on coating that can go on complex 24 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET

Light Up Paint curves. Zsinko, 55, has a background in custom-painting motorcycles and motor vehicles, along with computer technology. My dad owned body shops, he said. It was the intersection of paint and electronics. He said he became interested in glowing paint when asked to customize a motorcycle but found that what was available was unsatisfactory. Available photoluminescent paints which absorb sunlight and then glow discharged in about 15 minutes, he said. Zsinko said he wanted something that would last much longer and not fade and started looking at coatings that glow when hit with an electrical current. I worked out the basic idea in about 15 minutes and spent two years making it work, Zsinko said. He ended up renting a shed to develop what eventually became LumiLor. In February 2011, he came up with a formula that worked the way he wanted it to. It was damn near sexual, he joked. Zsinko and Mastrian, who has a business background, became friends over their common love of the Cleveland Browns. They met at a Browns training camp in 2006 former University ofakron star Charlie Frye was the team s new quarterback then. This company exists because of the Cleveland Browns, Mastrian said. Mastrian, who was running a cybersecurity company at the time and who has a degree in chemical engineering, agreed to help Zsinko with LumiLor. I remember the call, We got it, Mastrian said. The company s initial steps use LumiLor for custom paint jobs, with just four to five people now trained to properly apply the coating. We have a vision where we ll have a number of places up and running, Mastrian said. Continued on page 28... Include Us On Your Next Run!
