Suggestions for Choosing a Mental Health Professional Choosing a mental health professional or psychotherapist who is right for you may take time and effort. Certain therapists will work better with some individuals than others because of such factors as training, professional experiences, and personality. The Crime Victim Board encourages you to choose a therapist with whom you think you can work. PROFESSIONAL DEGREES Therapists come with a variety of degrees. More important than a specific degree is the training, experience, compassion, professional and ethical conduct of that therapist and the trust you have in that individual. Here are some of the degrees you may find: EdD LCSW LMFT LPC MA MD MDiv M Ed MSW MSCP PhD PsyD RN ThD Doctor of Education Licensed Clinical Social Worker Licensed Marriage/Family Therapist Licensed Professional Counselor Master of Arts (ask re: major) Medical Doctor (including psychiatry) Master Divinity (pastoral counselor) Master of Education (ask re:major) Master of Social Work Master of Science in Counseling Psychology Doctor of Philosophy Doctor of Psychology (no experimental research component) Registered Nurse Doctor of Theology (pastoral counselor) Make a list of questions to ask the therapist. This is an important part of the process. Talking briefly to therapists on the phone will save time and money.
