Faculty of Education PhD programme in GENERAL PEDAGOGY, SOCIAL PEDAGOGY AND GENERAL EDUCATION Website: http://www.unibz.it/it/education/progs/phd/default.html Duration: 3 years Academic year: 2015/2016 Start date: 01.11.2015 Official programme languages: Italian, German, English Programme contents: Over the three years, PhD students will actively attend the teaching and scientific activities. PhD students will also complete a piece of original research, supervised by two supervisors and by the PhD Course Committee. Apart from the main supervisor, every student will be assigned two more supervisors (Thesis committee), one of whom may belong to a European academic institution. Each students will have to dedicate themselves full time to the programme, which aims to develop the scientific subjects and the main research areas of the programme. In particular, each student is required to devote his/her time to his/her own specific research topic, which is formulated and agreed with supervisors on the basis of a Research and Study Plan, which defines the objectives of the research and the process involved in achieving them. The Research and Study Plan is planned individually by the student together with the supervisors and the Coordinator. The Research and Study Plan documents in detail the training provided for each student, showing clearly in qualitative / quantitative terms the type and the outcome of any intermediary assessment. Periodically, the student, along with his/her supervisor updates his/her Research and Study Plan, considering the progress made and developments in the research area. The Research and Study Plan contains a description of the work undertaken by the PhD student, presents the study plan that describes how the necessary expertise will be acquired and also does the following: - describes the research field of the student and the relevance of the chosen topic within the PhD research areas; - determines and gives reasons of the research procedures; - defines the group of supervisors (first supervisor up to a maximum of 2 other supervisors); - includes a literature review of the scientific work related to the research area and where current research has arrived (contents should reflect the positions of the scientific community and updated references); - defines the research findings and their relevance for the scientific community and for the territory; - justifies the choice of research methodology, the originality of the research design and the critical analysis carried out; - highlights the extent to which the expected results will be innovative and / or improved with respect to the literature; - describes the student s objectives for his/her scientific development; - indicates a plan for publications, presentations, papers, participation in conferences and stays abroad.

There is a wide range of training options; some require compulsory attendance while others are optional. The teaching includes a cycle of introductory lectures, practical sessions and seminars that aim to develop and illustrate the programme s subjects and research areas and to focus on the most recent findings in the education and social work sector. The cycles of compulsory and optional classes, workshops and seminars are decided by the PhD Course Committee at the beginning of the cycle. Other activities that require compulsory attendance, apart from those listed in the study programme, are optional internships done in research groups at other universities and/or public or private Research Centres (which have the pre-requisites of having a high cultural, scientific and personnel standing as well as acceptable facilities). Also optional participation at conferences and research at libraries and archives require compulsory attendance. PhD students can attend lectures, practical sessions, seminars and internships at other universities and universities with which the PhD programme has established an agreement. PhD students must also participate in educational and/or information events in Italy and abroad. Over the three years, students are required to spend a period abroad that should be no less than 3 months. This period can be divided into three stays (minimum three consecutive weeks in length). The supervision of the research project, the main focus of the PhD, is organised through monthly meetings with the main supervisor. In these meetings the student is required to submit a paper on the work undertaken. The meetings with the second supervisor should be held at least twice a year. Seminars will also be bi-monthly to monitor and develop the skills of the students (Coaching). Students will illustrate and discuss publicly the progress on their research. This practice represents an opportunity to make presentations at meetings and conferences. Research areas The PhD programme is divided into three distinct programmes: General Pedagogy, General Education, and Social Pedagogy and Social Work. The three programmes share core training on the epistemology of research and on qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Faculty of Computer Science PhD programme in COMPUTER SCIENCE Website: http://www.unibz.it/en/inf/progs/phdcs/default.html Duration: 3 years Academic year: 2015/2016 Start date: 01/11/2015 Official programme language: English Programme contents: The aim of the PhD programme is to allow students to acquire the ability to carry out independent research in the area of computer science. This also involves the ability to communicate ideas clearly and efficiently orally and written and the ability to work in groups. In order to conclude the programme successfully, the PhD student has to elaborate a research topic independently and this research must contribute and add significantly to current knowledge in the area of computer science. Due to the time limits of the programme, PhD students must concentrate on their research work. In order to achieve this, they are supported by the structure of the PhD programme. In the following, this structure is described in detail together with the procedures for the nomination of the supervisor, the definition of the research and study plan, and the examinations: The programme is divided into four phases, which end at months 6, 12, 24, and 36, respectively. For each PhD student, the PhD Course Committee nominates one of its members as a supervisor. It can also nominate a co-supervisor who will provide additional support. If the PhD student is enrolled in an international PhD programme with a double degree, also a second supervisor can be nominated. The PhD student prepares together with their supervisor(s) a Research and Study Plan, which defines the objectives of the research and the stages needed to complete it. These stages include the study of topics that are necessary for the student's research work. Periodically the PhD student must update the Research and Study Plan considering the progress made and the developments in the research area. The Research and Study Plan must be developed coherently with the phases of the programme, starting from the proposal for preliminary research (up to month 6), followed by the proposal for the complete research (up to month 12), and ending in the thesis proposal (month 24). Each phase finishes with an assessment, where the PhD student presents their work to the PhD Course Committee, which evaluates the student s progress. Each time this occurs, the student submits to the PhD Course Committee an updated Research and Study Plan. In the following, we present a more detailed description of the four phases: 1

Phase 1 covers the first six months. The objective for PhD student in this phase is to identify, under the direction of their supervisor(s), a research area, a specific topic within that area, and one or more methodological approaches to undertake the research. Students start by developing a solid understanding of the research area by attending classes and studying the recommended literature. Supervisors then insert PhD students into the Faculty s research activities that deal with the topic in question. Phase 2 covers the second half of the first year. The objective of the PhD student in this phase is to arrive at a clear definition of the research problems, of the expected results, and of the approach to follow. The student spends time both in improving their skills and knowledge that are necessary for the research, and in making initial progress in their research. Phase 3 covers the second year. The objective of the PhD student in this phase is to apply the chosen methodological approaches to find solutions to the research questions. Students are also expected to start publishing their results, if not done already earlier. During this phase, students should obtain results that will then form the basis of their thesis. Phase 4 covers the third year. The objective of the PhD student is to deepen and extend the initial research results, and to document their research in a thesis. Research areas: Research at the Faculty of Computer Science spans three main research areas, which are being developed by research groups on a long-term basis. General research areas: - Agricultural and forestry production - This area of research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms of agricultural and forestry systems in order to steer management towards a sustainable use of environmental, social and economic resources. In this context, the studies are characterised by extremely heterogeneous approaches and topics, which makes detailed analysis and combined analysis crucial. In this sense, the common denominator in sustainable management is the possible interaction between very different types of research, ranging from the biochemistry of the soil/plant ratio to the ecology of the landscape and cost-benefit analysis. Another distinguishing element of this area is the socio-economic analysis of production systems and the life cycle of agro-forestry products. Finally, the development of advanced technologies and tools that provide descriptions of innovative features of mountain agriculture without affecting the specificity of production is a further element that strongly characterises research in this area. - Food technology - This research addresses the definition of innovative methods for assessing and monitoring the quality and shelf-life of the foods that characterise mountain territories (such as milk, cheese, butter, wine, juices and fruit-based products, etc). The development and setting up of innovative methodologies for the evaluation of the chemical, physical and 2

sensory properties of food as well as the design of sensors and biosensors for monitoring food products and processes are the main features of this area. In addition, the use of modern technologies, including nanotechnology, to improve the food industry s products and processes give research a strong innovative character. - Environmental resources The evaluation of the effects of management and climate change on natural ecosystems and humankind is at the core of this subject area that can see many variations in research. Biodiversity, water quality, protection from natural disasters, the mitigation of climate change through the maintenance or enhancement of carbon stocks are just some of the resources or environmental features that characterise the research area. The use and development of advanced technologies for monitoring and the functional study of ecosystems, including through innovative approaches, such as those involving the use of stable isotopes, are some of the features of this area. At the beginning of the PhD cycle, a supervisor will be proposed to the admitted PhD students among the members of the Phd Course Committee, which needs to be confirmed by the same Committee. The Ph.D. is of cumulative nature, i.e. a collection of papers with an overriding introduction and conclusion. Monographs are not accepted. The PhD program is organized in the following way. 1st year The first year is mainly dedicated to course work (see course program). All course work at the Free University of Bolzano will take place in the first year. In addition, each Ph.D. student has a personal budget for choosing specialization courses at other institutions or events in the second year. At the end of the first year, the students need to present a proposal for the Ph.D. project, i.e. an outline of the papers to be developed, a plan for data collection and the methodological approach. 2nd and 3rd year In the second year and/or third year, the PhD students will stay usually for a period of six months abroad. The choice of the partner institution will be defined in accordance with the supervision based on the specific needs in terms of theoretical and/or methodological expertise needed to further advance the Ph.D. project. At the end of the second year, the students will present a refined Ph.D. proposal and a first draft of the paper. At the end of the third year, the students should have submitted at least one article. 4th year The final year consists in the completion of the Ph.D. through the successful completion of three papers. Research areas: The Ph.D. on organizational and institutional outliers deals with the uncommon, having the objective of increasing the knowledge about factors driving non-obvious success. It is focused on particular organizations and institutions that on the outset are characterized by uniqueness or liabilities that make performance a non-trivial question. Examples of potential macro research questions are: how can start-up companies affected by liabilities of newness and smallness compete with resourceful large established companies? How can small firms with reduced R&D budgets be innovative compared with larger counterparts? Why are family firms that are supposed to preserve family capital successful in diversification both in terms of geography and activities? Where are hidden champions? How does innovation happen in family firms? How can atypical organizations such as cooperatives withstand competition from traditional organizations? What can be done about breaking up the persistence of biases in populations of firms (e.g. gender biases in the boardroom)? How can social innovation flourish in a context dominated by an economic for-profit logic? How can smaller regions or cities reach levels of creativity comparable to large metropolitan areas? How can open capillary innovation beat closed, traditional, large scale innovation systems? What is the role of minorities in driving dynamic processes in regions? How can an unique institution such as the European Union composed of different nations with different languages and distinct but overlapping cultures develop a competitive and wealth enhancing area? What type of institutions favor the development of organizational outliers? While in general, management research investigates the competitive advantage of large and established firms, economics largely the regularity of systems (equilibrium approach), institutional theory and law the general application of rules and regulations, a concentration on outliers shifts the perspective towards understanding uncommon phenomena, which might also influence our understanding of more common phenomena. Possible research projects and supervisors (non exhaustive list) Title Succession and innovation in family firms Creative cities, the diffusion processes of innovation and entrepreneurship in non-metropolitan areas Timing in management decisions and organizational performance Network governance and competitiveness in cooperatives Organizational resilience to unpredicted external shocks Self-image and the acquisition of products from new ventures The European Union as institutional innovation Quality Coordination within Firms and Downstream Market Organization Dynamic Effects of Input Price Shocks in Open Economies Supervisor Michael Nippa Marjaana Gunkel Christian Lechner George Henrikse Alessandro Narduzzo Michael Bosnjak Stefania Baroncelli Günter Schamel Stefan Schubert 3

Admission requirements: Admissable candidates need to have obtained a Masters degree or a second cycle degree or an equivalent foreign title, within October 31. The selection will be based on the individual titles submitted by the candidate (curriculum vitae and at least two letters of recommendation written by former professors or thesis supervisors) and a motivation letter (written in English). In addition, during a personal interview, the language skills in English, the preparation and the aptitude for scientific research of the candidate, will be evaluated. The evaluation of the curriculum vitae consists in the following: a. the final mark and/or grade point average assigned to the Master or equivalent title b. average grade of the individual exams passed during the study program of the Master c. publications, if available d. working and research experience, if available e. knowledge of the English language at C1 level (CEFR), to be documented by the candidates through certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS, the First Certificate in English (Grade A ), etc. as recognised by the Language Centre of the FUB. In case of missing certification, the commission can evaluate the language skills autonomously. In any case the student will have to pass the English language certification at C1 level within the first study year. Evaluation criteria for examinations/qualifications: The evaluating commission can attribute 100 points per candidate, of which 60 can be assigned for the evaluation of the curriculum, 30 for the outcome of the interview and 10 for the motivation letter. In particular for the evaluation of the curriculum, up to 25 points can be awarded for the final mark or grade average of the Master or an equivalent foreign degree, up to 10 points for publications or working or research experience, up to 25 points for the general evaluation of the curriculum, with a special attention on the affinity to the objectives of the PhD Programme. Candidates are eligible if they reach at least 42 points for the evaluation of the curriculum, 21 points for the interview and 7 points for the motivation letter, for a total amount of at least 70/100 points. The ranking list for the admissible candidates to the PhD program is defined by the sum of points calculated as above mentioned. In case of a tie, the decision is taken by drawing.
