BORG DIGITAL High Availability The BORG DIGITAL Cloud is something we are extremely excited about. It is a highly specialised web hosting service which puts resilience, security and contingency at it s core. Because your sites are hosted over multiple servers, our cloud hosting offers the following benefits: It'ʹs very reliable and can survive server failures. It'ʹs scalable meaning you can use as much (or as little) as you need. Services (Files, Emails, DBs) are all hosted by different servers. Effective load balancing means traffic spikes are easily coped with. Access to our own intuitive control panel. Frequent data backups. Support for both Windows and Linux. Ability to upgrade and buy addons, such as additional disk space. Pricing & Scalability At BORG DIGITAL, we firmly believe in making the cloud accessible to everyone. We let you start small but provide you with a package which can scale to handle almost any traffic load. When your website hits the "ʺbig time"ʺ, gets featured on the TV or social media ("ʺThe Slashdot Effect"ʺ), you don'ʹt need to worry about your site going down, or running out of storage or bandwidth. Most websites on the BORG DIGITAL Cloud are small business websites. However, we have sites on our Cloud hosting which can spike to millions of hits per hour! We do not even notice the load as the traffic increase is small compared to the overall volume of traffic to the system. More importantly, our customers see no disruption to their website. Cloud Technology The BORG DIGITAL Cloud is the answer to your hosting problems. It was born out of a realisation that customers need performance, flexibility, scalability and reliability. If the below text seems a little technical, just stop reading and rest assured that uptime is our top priority. We take care of it so you don'ʹt have to.

Most shared hosting resides on a single server. One high end server is provisioned with an Apache web server, PHP/Perl, MySQL database engine, a mail server, an IMAP server, a POP server and various secondary services which, in tandem, provide the hosting service. A finite number of customers can be hosted per server and, when one server is full, another is provisioned. When a website grows too large for the resources one of these systems can provide, it is generally moved to a dedicated machine.

The BORG DIGITAL Cloud is Different! We harness the power of dozens of servers. Your website is no longer constrained to a single piece of hardware. Storage We store your website data on vast multi- disk arrays, each with 24TB of storage. These arrays are each replicated to a neighbour and that data is then sent using rsync to an off- site location for disaster recovery. In essence there are always 3 whole copies of your website and hundreds of snapshots. Data integrity is monitored in real time so that lengthy, offline filesystem checks which might normally cause downtime are not required. In the event of a complete storage node failure, its neighbour would take over its duties with no loss of data. Load Balancing When a user visits your website, an advanced layer 7 load balancer despatches that request to one of our backend application servers. These process your website'ʹs code, whether that is static HTML, PHP, Perl, ASP, Ruby and feed that data back to the load balancer. This all happens seamlessly and on a per request basis. This means that, should a site receive a large influx of traffic due to being featured on TV, for instance, each webserver only sees a modest increase in traffic and continues to perform normally.

This is in contrast to traditional hosting systems which would quickly become overloaded. How often have you been watching Dragon'ʹs Den, heard a website mentioned, tried to visit it and found it to be inaccessible? That wouldn'ʹt happen with our system as such a traffic surge is a drop in the ocean compared to the traffic volumes already being processed. Your frontend web application is served by one of our dedicated application nodes, chosen in a "ʺround robin"ʺ fashion every time a request is made to your website. Packed with RAM and CPU power, these servers only deal serving web pages and aren'ʹt hampered by providing other services such as email, DNS, etc. Quality of Service Unlike almost any other hosting provider, we don'ʹt limit overall CPU time at all. However, we do have sophisticated systems in place which will prevent a single user monopolising resources across the cluster, either through a highly inefficient application or an attempt to do batch processing (or anything more nefarious) on the front end web servers. Such processes are detected and killed within 60 seconds ensuring that the cluster is always fast, all of the time. For users who do need to perform background processing (such as image encoding, video encoding, database imports, etc) we provide specialised servers for this with full access to your webspace at no extra cost. Backups We take multiple daily 'ʹsnapshots'ʹ of your data. This captures changes and enables us to recover a file from almost any point in the last 30 days. In addition, each storage device is replicated not once but twice to prevent data loss due to hardware failure. Databases Database servers are a special case. They need 2 things to perform well; disk i/o and RAM. We don'ʹt use network storage, instead opting for fast, local, SAS disks in RAID 10 configuration or, in some cases, solid state storage.

Each database is dumped to an SQL file in your home directory once per day and that data is then replicated in the normal way. If you require more frequent SQL dumps, this can be set up via your control panel. Power and Network All our hosted service benefit from uninterruptible power and the cluster is no exception. Every server is fed from the primary building UPS, a large battery bank which 'ʹsmoothes out'ʹ any fluctuation in the mains voltage and provide standby power in the event of a loss of utility power, allowing time for the generators to start up. Once started, the generators can power the datacentre indefinitely in the case of a large scale power outage. In addition, storage nodes benefit from dual power supplies and are fed from a secondary UPS, keeping things live and your data safe if the primary building UPS were ever to fail. Content Delivery Network (CDN) This is a service which can be added by request at no extra charge. If we turn on the CDN network for your site, it will be stored across 24 different servers all over the world, if someone from the USA visits your site, it will be served to that client from the nearest USA content delivery node. We have CDN services across Europe, Asia, United States and Australia. For consistently fast loading sites across geographically remote locations Borg Digital CDN services are the answer.

Borg Digital users can choose any combination of these web content optimization features that take performance to the next level. Rocket Loader Automatically optimizes your pages to minimize the number of network connections and ensure even third party resources won'ʹt slow down page rendering. Reduced connections Combines multiple JavaScript files into a single request to avoid the overhead of multiple network requests.

Security and Attack Detection Borg Digital leverages the knowledge of a diverse community of websites to power a new type of security service. Online threats range from nuisances like comment spam and excessive bot crawling to malicious attacks like SQL injection and denial of service (DOS) attacks. Borg Digital provides security protection against all of these types of threats and more to keep your website safe.
