NORTHEASTERN STATE UNIVERSITY MASTER of SCIENCE in COUNSELING Admissions Information The M.S. in Counseling degree program prepares students to become competent and caring counselors. While the program offers a single graduate degree in Counseling, students choose from one of three specialty tracks. These tracks include: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Addictions Counseling, and School Counseling. All tracks meet academic requirements for Oklahoma professional counselor licensure as well as the requirements for most other states. Each track also meets the academic requirements for national counselor certification through the National Board of Certified Counselors. The Addictions Counseling track also meets the academic requirements for Oklahoma professional alcohol and drug counselor s licensure, while the School Counseling track meets the academic requirements for Oklahoma certification as a school counselor. The M.S. in Counseling degree program consists of sixty (60) credit hours. Of these 60 credit hours, 42 are common among all three tracks, while the remaining 18 hours are unique to a particular track. Regardless of track, the coursework is sequenced and departmental permission is required for some courses. A new class of students begins the program each Fall semester. Any coursework taken prior to full acceptance may not apply to the degree or the certificate. If courses are accepted as transfer credit, the maximum allowed is nine (9) credit hours. Students not admitted to the program will not be allowed to take clinical courses (i.e. Methods, Group Processes, Practicums or Internships). These programs have admission requirements in addition to the requirements for admission to NSU s Graduate College. The following materials have been designed to facilitate the application process and to inform you of the materials necessary for your application evaluation.
