In 2005, a class action was certified for the former residents of Woodlands (Richard v. HMTQ, 2005 BCSC 372). In 2009, the Province agreed to a class action settlement, which provides compensation to former residents who can establish that they suffered abuse while at Woodlands. If a claim is established, compensation ranges from $3,000 to $150,000 depending on nature of the abuse and injury. Over 800 class members have come forward to make claims under the class action settlement. To date, more than 100 claims have been submitted. However, at the present pace, it will take at least 5 more years to process the remaining claims.
